Why are you people so angry and saying your machine is obsolete? Essentially, every computer is obsolete the second a new model comes out. Your Intel machines will still run for a long time.

Did you expect Apple to stay with Intel's unreliable road map and inferior performance chips forever just to please you?

Can I ask why? They seemed to have covered their bases pretty well in not breaking compatibility.
It’s a knee jerk statement. People forget that these decision aren’t made lightly. The team of MBA, and PhD/master degrees engineers are also not there just for show, let alone the hundreds of million of dollars they are spending. Sure it might not be prefect but it’s also not something that Tim just woke up one morning and go yes Apple Silicon....

I've been thinking of upgrading my 2012 iMac to a newer iMac or Mac mini, but now I may just wait to see how this plays out. I assume that there will be some growing pains, as was the transition from PowerPC to Intel was. However, I'm looking forward to see how the A-series Macs perform overall.

If the first new Silicon Mac will be this year, then there's a very good chance that it will be the 16" MBP if not a brand new form factor. Wonder what will it be?

Well looks like this isn't the year for me to buy a new iMac unless it is one of the first to get the new chip. May this 2013 iMac last another year!

Same here was hoping to get a new iMac but instead I’ll invest in a new SSD and Ram and hold on

If you're reacting to this based on headlines, I definitely recommend watching the video. It really does a good job of addressing things.

- They expect a full transition for _new_hardware to take 2 years.
- Existing hardware will continue to receive mac OS updates for the foreseeable future (given that iOS 14 supports the 5 year old iPhone 6S, I'd anticipate at least the same 5+ years of support).
- The demonstrations of mac OS today were _all_ on devices that have the same internals as the latest iPad Pro, albeit with 16GB of RAM.
- As with the PPC to Intel transition, they are making it easy to compile universal binaries that work on both, and converting Intel-only apps to work on non-Intel hardware (great if the developers don't get around to updating). I used PPC Photoshop CS2 on my first Intel Mac, and this looks _way_ more performant than that.

Watch the video. It's smooth, even in demanding pro apps. I am very excited.

Edit: updating iPhone/iOS 14 support.

I am guessing it would lead to better battery life, performance, cooling, etc?

Can someone fill me in what the major differences between Intel and Apple chips would be? I've tried searching and found nothing reliable, but I am very interested on the subject. I'm guessing people will pen these differences later but anything early-on would be solid.

How long did they keep Rosetta 1 around? Certainly not very long. Apple track record indicates they will try to close out compatibility as soon as possible.

They kept it around for 3 OS versions - 10.4 through 10.6.

I’m looking forward to this. Macs have been held back by Intel chips for quite some time.

Well, this is my last Mac. It's been a long time coming, but this is the final straw for me.

Because I like the flexibility of running Windows in bootcamp and VMWare. Or boot into Linux. Or anything else. I don't trust them not to use this complete control over your user experience to lock you out of using the machine the way you may want to. I'm tired of soldered on RAM and soldered on storage. I love MacOS, but not enough to put up with this.
I agree with you. This is buidling a huge walled garden to only suit what Apple wants you to do. I to will be leaving this platform. I'm sick of what that have done with iOSingfying everything to the point that it's hard to even understand where they are headed. Big Sur looks identical to iOS iPad. MacOS will sadly disappear. I'm sticking with Mojave until I can work out how to migrate my entire life to Linux. I'm done.

Damn, these Apple silicon chips will be a beast. I'm not upgrading until they are available on the MacBook Pro. That Photoshop and Lightroom demo sold me on it.

If anything now is the time to buy a new Intel Mac. Its mature and will be more than viable for the next 5 yrs. Buying a new A-series Mac at the beginning of the transition brings a whole level of uncertainty that isn't worth it unless you're a developer or like to live on the edge.

Once the transition is over then you can safely upgrade.

Same. Was about drop $2k on one for my daughter's graduation gift. Now idk. I wouldn’t expect it to be usable 6/7 years later like my current one.
You know that macOS devices don’t stop working just because the most recent release drops support for them right?

My parents still use my 2007 (yes 13 year old) MBP17 - with iCloud and FaceTime too!
