But not consistently (as also illustrated by Consumer Reports — which historically hasn't been the most ardent Apple supporter), which is the point. (To spell it out, since you seem slow to grasp this — any time there's a discrepancy, you won't know which is actually correct.)

An all this quite apart from the legal ramifications of simply copying another company's data.

So I reiterate:

An asinine suggestion.

This is willful attempt to make Apple use G software so that they could then sue Apple. Well, for Google which is used to stealing others' IP, might be a normal suggestion. But not to people who innovate themselves.

Apple really gotta go to that level just to get map fixed? I thought Apple was different in regarding to being innovative or to "think different." This piss me off.

Edited: By the way, Steve Jobs knew that Apple wasn't made for maps because they had no background in doing maps. This is why Steve wanted to hire someone who have extensive background on maps (google, garmin...)

Google is using a vehicle with 9 cameras mounted to gather data. Apple not-so-Genius (wearing different T-Shirt) riding on a moped with iPad/iPhone is going collect the the information.

There is car rental location with a front desk sign to call the phone number if customer needs help. We may face similar situations in Apple stores.

Here is an article on how Google collects data. Interestingly non of the US Media covered this.

I had submitted corrections from day one but NONE were corrected.

Yea right. Like after this PR hit Apple has just taken they are gonna *instantly* post your data along with others with no oversight -- forget thinking that they haven't received MILLIONS of reports just like yours or mine I sent in.

I'm confident they looking for a faster, more reliable fix BEFORE letting user data define it's mapping future.

Do some of you even breathe before posting?

What's the fuss?

I haven't had any issues with the app and I have been outside Seattle, Portland, NYC, and Southern Indiana. It saved me quite a few times while in NYC. I remember back when Google released their maps and it got me lost quite a few times.

The vast majority of people who will want to report errors are people who have an iPhone/iPad/iPod touch - and those people have access to the maps on their devices so wouldn't require a web interface. Those are the people who's errors Apple needs to focus on. So while there are reasons someone may want to USE these maps on the web my comment wasn't about that - it was about error reporting.

Haven't used to error reporting much yourself? It's good for fixing a POI (maybe) and that's it. Doing something a little harder either means you have to explain it in great detail through text or through an address!?!. I have tried to remove a mislabeled route through error reporting and I don't even know if the damn thing is submitting it. Moving pins around also seems buggy as hell, it sometimes just drop them, it seems to snap to a grid most times and essentially they should have noted if this is meant to be store-front or anything else. There are no conventions explained and since the current POI's are totally random, they are impossible to use for guidance.

This is a joke to use on iDevices.

My guess is that first wave of corrections will coincide with release of newer iPad minis. Anyway surely iOS should be updated to support the new hardware. Thats a good chance to make Apple Maps version 1.1

You repeated it so many times that its not funny anymore. Or interesting. Just like an programmed.

Answer: Garbage Collection and Waste Management companies

Question: Who should Apple partner with to solve their maps and street view problems?

If there is any one industry that visits every street in America at least once a week, it is the waste management industry. So theoretically, the data can be collected in one week! But given that the mapping equipment needs to be shared, let us give it 4 weeks.

Apple need not get involved in this directly. Just like they invest in plants in China, they can invest in partners to buy the mapping equipment that these partners use for an exclusive use of that data for some years.

Apple, let us put some $50 million or so of that $100 billion to good use.

Post office? They even keep databases! Apple should buy the USPS (which is in financial trouble anyways) and enlist them with camera/backpacks.

Too bad there are no Apple Stores in my country (Finland). The nearest one seems to be in Sweden, but I doubt any of those employees understand Finnish.

I always thought that you can find Finnish Swedes if necessary. But you won't need Sweden as a local focus base. It can be straight to Finland-US pipeline.

yo! Apple. Why don't you stop being cheapos and spend some of that billions to actually hire thousands of people who's job is dedicating to fixing your maps. Get those people out on the streets, on foot, in cars, anything. That's how Google Maps got to the level of quality it is today.

This comment has hit the nail square on the head. It's time they started spending some of their cash to improve the experience of their loyal customers, rather than taking their hard-earned money and p*ssing all over them.

Google map data is copyrighted...Apple can't just use that as a reference and correct their own maps based on what Google shows...they have to go out and research it themselves, or licence it.

If Google have any sense, they will have plenty of deliberate mistakes in their maps which they would be able to use to prove if Apple had copied their data.

Ahhh so that is what Apple are doing now with Maps!

The real interesting part of this story is the mention of this "internal portal" that the employees will have to submit errors and make corrections. Is this their Map Maker? Is this something that may eventually be released to the public at large? Are the Apple Store employees acting as beta testers of this tool?

Reporters, Report!

Yea right. Like after this PR hit Apple has just taken they are gonna *instantly* post your data along with others with no oversight

Why not?

Most of the data included in the app as it stands was clearly done with no oversight whatsoever?

Why don't they just follow up with our error reports??

I personally submitted hundreds, since launch. Not a single one was corrected, some of them gaining bit publicity...

What makes you think this isn't part of that followup effort? I think it's a smart use of an existing resource.

If thats true, doubling oversight is even more important though even the 1.0 version is not end of the world. I remember that it took 2-3 iterations for OS X to become a best desktop OS as we know it by now.

Using Apple Store employees is just one part of the task. There are multiple reports of headhunting for top quality staff as well.

Go easy NAG - Apple deserves a big heaping of criticism on this. Too many of their launches are plagued with problems. Yes, there are Apple haters who can't wait to shoot Apple down,

but WHY does Tim Cook have to give them so much ammunition?

Eh? I'm not saying people shouldn't push for Apple to do better. I'm saying people should probably calm down a bit and make sense or maybe at the very least stop contradicting themselves between various BREAKING stories that hit Twitter and Facebook. You know, make sense so you can effectively express what you want to Apple.

"manually examine Apple's mapping data in their areas and submit corrections and improvements."

So, the areas around Apple stores will be SUPER accurate, but Iowa... not so much.

Citizens of Iowa demand that Apple properly map both of their roads.

A recent report had apple maps usage at just 4% (and even those who spot errors may not report them). I am guessing that Apple's initial plan of relying on consumer loyalty didn't quite pan out.

The recent report is incredibly flawed. It is based off data usage and the new maps caches the vector data. The initial few days saw a whole lot of downloading of new maps which has since tapered off because the devices have all cached the data in each person's local area. Also, Apple Maps is 5 to 7 times more efficient on data than the old Google-based solution even when it does have to pull data from the server.

Waze (which Android fans loved until Apple started using them) + TomTom (which lots of people loved until Apple started using them) + user-submitted improvements from millions of iOS 6 users + Apple’s own internal improvements such as this program = pretty good maps pretty quick!
