This is getting really frustrating. I can't believe there hasn't been a bigger push to get Apple to fix this problem. There has got to be way more people than the hand full on here that is having this problem. We watch a ton of movies through the ATV and now with the stuttering, it's unwatchable. I guess I'm going to have to try the roll back method.

Thanks cynics. I followed your instructions and so far so good. Hopefully Apple finds a solution soon.

Same problem here

It really sucks - I'be had to resort to the Beamer App. Works fine but I'm missing my usual UI.

I had problems airplaying and streaming video after the FW 6.x update. I downgraded to FW 5.3 and that solved it.

I haven't gotten my atv yet, setup homesharing and tested on my iphone and happy with it so far; anyway when you put 5.3 on it, how do you keep the atv from updating or is it like the iphone, you have to apply the update? When I get one I probably will put it on firmware and stick with it unless I see issues, thanks.

It just keeps asking if you want to install the update. Automatic updates weren't part of that version.
If you're buying a new ATV, you won't be able to backdate it, as the downgrade only works on the first revision of the ATV 3.

A simple temp fix is to change the resolution of your ATV to 720p 60hz.

Not ideal as you lose 1080p but it does make content watchable again.

EDIT: scratch that, it's just started doing it again... :-(

Thanks

Cynics' suggestion and MO fixed it for me, too - thanks :)

When Apple releases a fix, please let us know in here if you can - then it's safe to update again.

I got an apple tv used this weekend, A1427 model with 6.1 and no issues so far. So hoping it is just a random bug here and there. I did try to mess with wwe network, it didn't work, and then after that movies from home sharing wasn't working. I restarted the apple tv, all good as the apple tv is just for home sharing and apple stuff, I got apps like wwe network and such on consoles.

Oh yeah, i redeemed a few favorite movies with itunes (can't stand that ultraviolet crap) and I added another movie to my collection. I found a weird bug: Newest movie, I hit play the first time it spins and the bar shows it is playing, nothing happens. I back out, open another movie play it for a second or two, then go back to the new movie, poof it plays and from there on out all is good. I don't know if there is something the apple tv is doing vs reading my home sharing, but overall 6.1 has just minor bugs, but it is affecting others. I hope 6.1.x comes and squashes the bugs as when I get on a stable version, I will stick with it as home sharing is my main use for the apple tv.

As soon as the camera starts panning the picture gets jittery, like it's stuttering. Not smooth at all.

In my case I noticed that my ATV was operating at 60HZ, so just out of curiosity I switched to 50Hz and everything was suddenly fine.

What's really strange is that if I go back to "auto" with ATV reverting to 60Hz then the picture starts getting strong jitter again during motion... but only on HDMI 2 & 3 on my Panasonic TV. When I use HDMI 1 everything is fine for some reason. Really can't figure this one out...

The source doesn't matter though, so I get the same issues regardless of whether I'm streaming from my home library (laptop) or playing from the cloud.

The frame dropping definitely isn't fixed in my ATV with 6.1.1.

I'm getting this same jerky playback. Very annoying and latest updates haven't helped. I normally find that when it starts doing it, I hit rewind and then immediately hit play again. Fixes it for a while but it then comes back.

Very odd, and hope a fix happens soon as it's very annoying!!

I am subscribing to this.

I am getting Frame skipping as well. 1080P M4Vs streaming from iTunes.

The fix posted to revert to old code - I know thats for the first model only..

Will that work on the first model of AppleTV 3 regardless of software on it now?

Have you tried changing the video setting from Auto to 1080 50Hz? In my case the juddering stopped completely.

I'm very surprised Apple hasn't sorted this out yet...

Me too... buffering madness

My ATV doesn't stutter... it just will not load up 1080 material... the spinning wheel just spins and spins...

I wish Apple would 'get on it!'

Update:

I just got an ATV3 3.1 on 5.0.2

No stuttering with 1080p M4V rip (any size) playback through Home Sharing...

Resolution on ATV hard set to 1080p@60

No changes to TV at all....

Netflix Dolby 5.1 no issues either...

Apple jacked these up over the last year and a half...

I don't think it's the fact that they've improved them — there's a die shrink on the processor, but otherwise it should be identical performance wise. It's the fact that that Apple TV has 5.0.3 on it — if you update it, then almost certainly you'll have this problem again.

Nah because there are reported 3.1 A1427 models in this thread that downgraded to 5.3 from 6.1.1 and the stutter was reported gone.

I would be willing to bet if I moved it to 5.3 it would be ok.

Upgrade it to the latest version - NOT

But no need in even touching it. Its working perfect.

Wish Apple would sort this out.

Amazing that a company of this calibre could mess up the firmware and not sort something like this out within days...
