So just to verify, using Subler and the '64 bits chunk offset' option is the fix for this?

Been using MP4Tools for everything, guess I can switch apps. Is MP4Tools the only app that would cause issues, or videos done with handbrake causing the same issues?

I'd say yes, and maybe this is just because I'm not very versed in this, but when I use subler, no matter which audio conversion option I select from DTS, the remuxed file does not have true surround sound. MP4tools was flawless in this regard, and even gave different audio type options.

I haven't tried anything with Subler yet, but I will keep an ear out for that. I know in MP4Tools I usually do multichannel AC3 I think. I always had good surround sound. I think I saw an AC3 Multichannel option in Subler.

I encode and tag all my movies with iVI and I've been having issues with anything 1080p sent through there. If I run the same file through Handbrake using the Apple TV3 preset they play flawlessly. My process now is run Handbrake using Apple TV3 preset then send the file to iVI and add metadata to the Handbrake file.

A user recently informed me of this issue and I just started looking at it. I can duplicate this with my Apple TV 2, but other iDevices seem unaffected. So it's hard to say if it's an encoding issue or if the Apple TV software is the problem. Regardless I'm checking to see if there is a fix on the encoding side. As a temporary solution, the newest version of MP4tools (v3.4.3) has a "Remux Videos" option in the Edit Files tab which runs the video through mp4box without encoding any tracks. In my testing this seems to fix the issue for previously encoded videos. Your mileage may vary though.

This is a tough issue to test for since it seems to take 10-15 minutes for it to show up on test videos so feel free to share details that you have discovered with this issue either in this thread or via the emmgunn website e-mail.

Cheers.

Thanks for your comments emmgunn, further to my previous 'Subler' fix post (top page 3) I should point out that I am using MP4tools 3.3.7 (registered) on Mac OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) and am therefore unable to test the newest version until I make the switch to Mavericks. I continue to use it for DTS audio decoding, then I remux in Subler.

MP4tools (and MKV/AVItools) are excellent software tools and are currently my single biggest incentive for wanting to make the Mac OSX upgrade!

Cheers.

I will be able to do a before/after test this evening, will report back with results once I have!

I dropped an .m4v into MP4Tools and clicked the Remux button. The file was added to the queue but the queue isn't going anywhere– the file's status is simply "Queued". Has anyone had any luck with this feature?

I remuxed a couple as a test and MP4Tools worked fine - I haven't had a chance to see if it made a difference on the Apple TV side (I have to wait till after sunset... :)

Something was weird with my download of MP4Tools. A new download and the remux is working as expected. I'll be testing it shortly.

Just saw there is a new BETA Apple TV update out. If anyone here has access to it I'd love to hear if this studdering issue has been addressed.

The release notes indicate that the beta has stuttering problems as a known issue.

Possible Fix

I was having the same issues, but seemed to be entirely with HD only (Lego Movie, Frozen, etc...). When purchased, you get both versions, but didn't know how to get ATV to grab the SD version when playing. Went to ATV/Settings/iTunes Store/Video Resolution and changed it to "Standard Definition."

Problem seems to be resolved, now waiting on Apple to fix the issue.

I'm not paying Apple MORE $$ to buy a movie in 1080p only to force my Apple TV to display it on my 65" plasma in 480p. Fix the damn problem!

So I finally got around to trying out a new movie. I first put the MKV file through MP4Tools so I could convert the DTS audio to AC-3 (I really wish Subler would do this).

Then after that, I put the file through Subler to remux and add meta data. The movie about half-way through, still started getting out of sync with audio and had some buffer/stutter issues. Though the same movie streamed via my PS3 plays perfect, same with the other movies in my library.

Pretty sure I am finally done with the Apple TV and Apple Ecosystem for media to my TV. Apple just doesn't take it seriously, so how can I?

Has anyone else tried another device to stream 1080P to TV over network? I am looking at the Western Digital TV devices. They look to be what I am looking for to stream from my Desktop PC to my Receiver/Home Theater. I don't think Roku will stream from my PC over a network will it, just online sources like Netflix?

PRAISE JEEBUS!

I've got way too many movies to try and remux them all. Glad Apple is on top of this.

This issue has been around for several weeks now and Apple doesn't seem to have very quick reflexes when it comes to solving such a serious issue.

It has put me off from buying iTunes stuff because my last purchase was juddering until I played with the settings and lowered one of them. But thanks to them I have finally tried Hulu (and about to try Netflix) so some good has come from this after all... :)

I move to LG SmartTV PLEX Media Server and i am very happy i move my appletv to another and older tv just for netflix

so sad

How come you're remuxing again with Subler? There's no need to do that — MP4Tools has already done it. Subler must be reintroducing the problem into your files. You can use Subler for just the metadata.

For the record, I used the updated version of mp4tools to remux an already remuxed m4v (via an older version of MP4Tools) and the stutter was 100% gone. I'm currently remuxing movies and TV shows on an ad hoc basis as I watch them (don't have HD space to do everything).

I re-muxed with Subler because the issue was still there for me, even with the latest MP4Tools that supposedly fixed the issue. I thought maybe Subler would help somehow, was just an attempt to try something different.

This issue was never there before these latest Apple updates, as well as I can stream via PS3 perfectly fine. I just prefer to have a media box rather than a console.

Thanks for the Plex suggestion, I think I might actually go that route with a Roku 3. Seems to have the best hardware, and Plex can do a direct play pass through with MP4 files and DTS/AC-3 without needing to transcode on the Roku 3. Seems it might even be able to do direct pass through with some MKV files, might not even need to remux anymore.

If I had a smart TV, I would love to not need anything, maybe soon.

Apple TV 6.2 is out. Anyone brave enough to update and check if the issue has been resolved? I would volunteer but unless I know 100% that Apple is still signing version 5.3 I'm not going to bother.

I have some movies that were converted from MKV, and are only just within the limits of what the Apple TV can play. I noticed a bit of stutter with the latest Apple TV firmware. Remuxing with MP4Tools has helped in most cases. I have one movie which just barely plays - don't even dream of FF/REW :)

What I do not have is a problem playing purchased movies. Anything purchased from iTunes seems to work fine.

Same here. I am also still on 5.3 and would like to hear if 6.2 fixes this issue.
