Now this is the Apple TV that NEEEDS to be jailbroken. Lots of potential from things apple won't allow.

The remote is worth $79 while the old one is "only" $19 so $60 are for the remote, $20 for the new hardware (you get 32GB instead of 8GB of storage and faster SoC).
Of course I'd like prices to be lower when speaking about Apple's, but the new ATV is not expensive compared to other Apple's products.

I thought it was a little pricey, but not too high. I figured the increase price was mostly due to the remote.

I still got it though.

The problem with the remote is that is easily dropped, especially when you have kids.
I hope the Apple TV can be fully controlled via the remote app on the iPhone like the 3rd generation so you are not forced to buy a new one in case you lose or damage the one bundled with the TV.

The omission of optical audio out is a deal breaker. I just don't want to upgrade my A/V stack to support this right now.

Really too bad, I would've been totally on board for day 1.

That said, if Elgato ever gets around to putting an Eye TV app on it I may be forced to drop some money on a new HDMI capable receiver.
I am in the same situation and now is not the time to drop serious money on an AVR with HDMi capability because very, very few support HDMI 2 and HDCP2.2

Google, or go on Amazon or Alibaba. You''ll find one inside 1 minute.
Your reply means your not really looking for this, just trying to score a point.
If you're ready to buy 500, you can get them for $5.
It's all digital and old tech,
so it's not something costly at all to buy for those that really need it..

If I come back in another post and your telling me you haven't found one.
I will have to declare that your just pushing buttons for kicks and you don't really want one.
There is a much better solution buy a ROKU 4 you not only get the optical out you also get HDMI2 HDCP2.2 PLEX preinstalled and all the search capability included for PLEX and the Amazon store.

I do HDMI to the TV screen and then optical out from TV screen to the sound system. Get DD5.1 and it sounds great. Surely most TVs have Optical out?

This will be my method, as current ATV3 uses optical to the AV Receiver - A mighty fine Yamaha, sadly with no HDMI. Just can't justify an upgrade.
I've already tested 5.1 pass-thru from ATV3 to TV via HDMI, then out of TV via optical to amp, and it works fine.

I've used inexpensive adapters like this one for these situations: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KBHX072?keywords=hdmi optical audio adapter&qid=1446112531

emulators for one. I could see using a ps4 controller on it too. Lots of other things apple restricts that can be beneficial.

In time apple will release updates with new functionality. It's a new OS and like final cut when they rewrote it a few years back many features were missing. But they frequently updated it to add the features back.

Now sounds like you want it jail broken to do illegal stuff.

That is true but fact still remains that most people know their way around a qwerty better than alpha ordered. Its like riding a bike. But now we have to learn how to ride a unicycle.

Well, this is your chance to learn the alphabet then ;)

Da
Wow, that's pretty damn bad!

David Pogue said that, I have a feeling it's gonna be great ;)

The only thing I don't get is why the controller does not have dedicated buttons for channel up and down. With those I could put my TV remote in a closet and use the Apple TV remote for everything. I know they want us to use the Apple TV to control everything that is going on, but we are far removed from having the same content on the Apple TV as through cable.

The whole point is to get you to use the Apple TV as your primary if not only device. It wouldn't be the opposite of what apple is trying to accomplish if they were to put channel up or down on it so you can switch channels.

Can someone just tell me if universal search and all of the other siri commands will work with my tagged movies on my NAS!?

Oh yes - well I hope it arrives sooner than that API for FaceTime that was promised...

Yes it will come sooner since it's beneficial to Apple. FaceTime is more beneficial to Apple being on their devices only device as it will force people who want that and other exclusive features to buy their products. It was a strategic move by Apple to keep it on their platform only, and it worked out for the better.

I'm happy with my 8GB Apple TV 3 and will not replace it as I see no reason from these reviews to do so but than I'm not a techie and have no idea of what "faster SoC" means.

Out of five pages I can't believe I'm the first person to ask what is that sweet TV he is using? I'm guessing it is some sort of projector unless it is some fancy computer graphical trickery?
