agreed, hence having a 3.5mm IR input is the best solution, the IR emitter can be anywhere and the plug transfers the signal.

You put one of these somewhere visible to remote but out of view of nrmal viewing

I think the only adapter option Apple would even consider would a IR-to-Bluetooth one. A cable like that goes entirely against their design ethos. Especially since casual consumers would undoubtably confuse it for a headphone jack.

I wish Apple revamps the AppleTV and makes it capable amongst others of being able to play any type of file under the sun that you throw at it. Just like WDTV does but with the speed and reliability of Apple.

Increased graphic and audio capabilities
Better GUI
Internal storage so you can…
Auto download podcasts, movies, music, and tv shows
App Store
A version of Siri optimized for multi-media commands and home use
At least one HDMI port
Be a Homekit hub

Ultimately, I want Apple TV to be the hub for the home and I’d pay for it. Let everyone else fight over the less than $100 market.

One of these will do most of that ;-)

They don't want you to be able to play anything though, they want to lock you into itunes.

I would expect the next bump to be faster wifi and an A7 chip. It seems logical for the A7 to next year replace the A5 in the base model TV, iPod touch and iPad mini.

I think all we'll see, disappointingly, is:

- Basic onboard storage to facilitate more App stuff, but no actual 3rd party app store
- Stick Form (perhaps if they bag adding any more storage)
- Faster internals

I'd love to be proven wrong, but it's basically pathetic how little updating the Apple TV gets.
Definitely needs more horsepower.

Make it cheaper to compete with Roku

People are crazy if they think Apple will sell a $300 gaming console to compete with PS4 and it will just have App Store games haha

Keep current Apple TV it's fine at 50-79.99(was 75 last Black Friday this year 80 :()

All they can do is add 4k which 90% of people don't need and they don't even support it yet.

So realistically lower price, AC Internet, allow Amazon Prime(software update)

I don't see how Amazon Prime is different then Netflix or Hulu. All the gaming consoles allow all these services

Apple TV to me competes with consoles not on games but features. I am sacrificing not paying games for ITunes. That is why I think Apple TV is super over priced. Priced at the same price as original Wii or Xbox 360

Amazon lets you purchase and rent movies/shows as well, putting them in direct competition with iTunes.

Playstation lets you use all of them. They need to compete with Roku that has all of them.

Obviously if you buy an Apple TV it's for iTunes as it's the main reason to have it but them blocking other options is lame

How does a general standard format lock you into iTunes?
If you can't play the most popular video format (mkv) then their thinking is probably that you will be more likely to purchase the content from them. In apples mind the appletv is just a box that gets you into the itunes ecosystem. They don't want to be a Roku/WDTV that plays everything. I don't blame them really.

You do understand, that MKV is only de-facto standard and most popular among BluRay rippers?
Or do you see it (widely) used anywhere else, besides MakeMKV and Thepiratebay users?
It is not a big problem to find the same things in MP4 or even specially in AppleTV formats, if you will.
My point is, you can get your MP4 media from same sources where you do get MKV-s (or repackage if absolutely needed), the aTV/iTunes ecosystem does not limit your possibilities of consuming such media in any way.

MKV is the most flexible file format and is why it is preferred over MP4. It is the most used in "unofficial" capacities i.e. not corporate purchases.

Apple does not want the apple tv being used as a home blu-ray ripping player or pirate box, while Roku does not care what you use it for because they have no product to sell besides the box itself.

You can see the difference right? It's why I'd doubt apple will ever officially support mkv on any of their future models. The box is just a gateway to their product.

To be honest, I fail to see it's distinct advantages over MP4. I admit, the open-source and community-produced toolset is impressive.
They are ideologically quite similar - multi-track containers with support for various track formats. I believe both are also openly documented formats.
But I might be short-sighted, of course.

App Store

game controllers

A9 chip or equivalent very high end graphics for games.

Cable TV etc through Apple TV rather than a box or services directly on the box. In uk for example sky or Virgin tv on demand

On demand tv services such as iplayer, 4oD included or as app downloads.

UI redesign to enable more apps on screen avoiding scrolling, wallpapers.

Multiple logins for content, log in the family without family sharing turned on.

Continuity support for remote use from Mac ipad etc.

USB support for content and networked content though may come with plex and App Store anyway.

4K for all the AV geeks though I don't want it personally.

Remote control should offer TV to ipad/iPhone/Mac mirroring as well as current input methods

16, 64 and 128 gb storage options for games and apps.

Os should be more like ios with info bar, notifications and more on the home screen.

Better integration of ios and Apple TV services, such as youtube having some kind of continuity to sign you in and out and view your subscriptions, switch watching videos and play positions.

Continuity to watch any content on you I device and the other way. Eg watching mad men on Netflix half way through switch to iPhone, and offline viewing for content if you want to leave the house without the need to stop the program and download the whole thing play position etc.

Oh there is so much stuff you can improve its almost endlessly compared to where the ipad and iphone are! Please Apple blow us away again!

While that is true, the user experience isn't optimal. While Plex, etc. may bridge some of the usability concerns, I would much prefer Apple TV "Pro" type of device that could serve as iTunes Server.

Of course, this would never happen and in the absence of that, I wouldn't mind if Apple would upgrade Time Capsule with such capability and allow Apple TV to talk to it.

Apple TV 4k

With the 5k iMac released and iPhone 6's capable of doing 4k video (with the only use for that being 4k Airplay), I'm kind of betting on the new Apple TV being called Apple TV 4k.

Hopefully Apple will work out deals to upgrade previously purchased content to 4k or 3D as these things become options in Apple's ecosystem.

You make a good point, but I think Apple got rid of their home theater application they used to include with Macs, the solution (user interface) needs to be simple and a mini is actually overkill.

But, you did inspire me to do some research (as the meme goes, "You had my curiosity, but now you have my attention!") so now I'm looking into other HTPC options, including the Chromebox since I'm already a fan of Google Play Music and Movies, and the XBoxOne, which I've been itching to find an excuse to purchase.

If it gets to March the ATV3 will be three years old. Therefore it might be logical that it's replaced with the A8. However I don't know what the cost difference is (compared to the A5 price in 2012)?

App store

Full Homekit Hub Controller. Security etc.

Game controllers

Microphone and Camera compatible - For FaceTime and to control home kit stuff and Siri.

A8x Processor / GPU and Decent storage size - 32gb for all the App Store apps ;)

Actually allow external NAS storage as a Full DVR... if apple ever launch a proper TV and Service this would be great.

Compatible with Apple watch Siri..
"Launch Plex on KitchenTV"
"Play music on Apple tv in Lounge"

I do think if they ever launch a proper 42"/65" tv then having an ATV as a proper dockable brain they would get people updating every ATV generation.

All I want is a TV SHOW 'Genre' tab and or single title start for each TV Show. Hate scrolling through everything to find what I want to watch. Brutal

1) Continuous Play. Once a TV show episode finished playing the next should start automatically. Having to manually start each episode of a season is so 2010.
2) Siri
3) IPL
4) SPEED
