I think the only adapter option Apple would even consider would a IR-to-Bluetooth one. A cable like that goes entirely against their design ethos. Especially since casual consumers would undoubtably confuse it for a headphone jack.

Increased graphic and audio capabilities
Better GUI
Internal storage so you can
Auto download podcasts, movies, music, and tv shows
App Store
A version of Siri optimized for multi-media commands and home use
At least one HDMI port
Be a Homekit hub
Ultimately, I want Apple TV to be the hub for the home and Id pay for it. Let everyone else fight over the less than $100 market.
They don't want you to be able to play anything though, they want to lock you into itunes.I wish Apple revamps the AppleTV and makes it capable amongst others of being able to play any type of file under the sun that you throw at it. Just like WDTV does but with the speed and reliability of Apple.
How does a general standard format lock you into iTunes? They don't want you to be able to play anything though, they want to lock you into itunes.
One of these will do most of that ;-)
So realistically lower price, AC Internet, allow Amazon Prime(software update)
Amazon lets you purchase and rent movies/shows as well, putting them in direct competition with iTunes.
If you can't play the most popular video format (mkv) then their thinking is probably that you will be more likely to purchase the content from them. In apples mind the appletv is just a box that gets you into the itunes ecosystem. They don't want to be a Roku/WDTV that plays everything. I don't blame them really. How does a general standard format lock you into iTunes?
You do understand, that MKV is only de-facto standard and most popular among BluRay rippers? If you can't play the most popular video format (mkv) then their thinking is probably that you will be more likely to purchase the content from them.
To be honest, I fail to see it's distinct advantages over MP4. I admit, the open-source and community-produced toolset is impressive.MKV is the most flexible file format and is why it is preferred over MP4.

I would expect the next bump to be faster wifi and an A7 chip. It seems logical for the A7 to next year replace the A5 in the base model TV, iPod touch and iPad mini.
