I've had a few issues so far - only had a quick play so need to mess about with it some more.

Start with a positive! I love the initial set up. Just held my iPhone 11 Pro to the ATV and it was logged into to my Apple ID. Turning on the sync mode it then downloaded all the apps I have on my Apple TV HD and I was good to go. I still needed to sign in to individual apps (Netflix, iPlayer etc) but I still very much rate the ease of setting things up.

First problem: I had two set box boxes both trying to take over the TV - my Freesat box and the Apple TV. I had to turn off HDMI-CIC on my TV set to get it to calm down and stop constantly switching between the two boxes!

When I turn off the Apple TV it also turns off my main TV. That's no good if I want to switch to another STB, so I have to navigate the menus and put the ATV into sleep mode instead.

As I suspected, the Apple TV doesn't support HLG HDR which is a major oversight as the A12 is easily capable of decoding it. Apple know about HLG - they even mentioned it in the last keynote when talking about the new iPad - so there's no excuse. I can view UHD HDR content coded in HLG on BBC iPlayer using the native app on my LG OLED and it looks fantastic but open BBC iPlayer on the Apple TV and the same programme is only available in HD. It's not good enough (although entirely expected).

The remote is so much better than the old one. We all new it would be; although the jog control seems to be inconsistent across apps. I suspect software updates will help. The combination of click and trackpad control in the single remote has been done well. It only took them 15 years to get the remote right.

So nice to be able to AirPlay a video I took earlier of my dogs straight to the big screen from my iPhone 11 Pro. I'll also look forward to trying my AirPods with it later this evening so I don't have to worry about loud TV noise waking anyone up who's already gone to bed. I don't usually have any complaints, but it won't hurt to be able to do this.

Despite my TV supporting Dolby Atmos, because the Apple TV has no pass through, I had to switch it to Dolby Digital 5.1 in order to get any sound out of my Sonos Arc. I'm not complaining, but I need to sit down and watch some content to make sure that the decoding is working as I expect it to and I'm getting sound properly out of the rears.

EDIT: Dolby Atmos works for me as my LG OLED natively supports Atmos. So Apple TV -> LG -> Sonos Arc is giving me full Dolby Atmos support from relevant content (I've tried Netflix and Apple TV+)

All initial thoughts after just half an hour or so of playing around.

.....I've decided to sell my Apple TV - its still sitting in the box unopened and still sealed (haven't had time to set up!).

My tv doesn't have more than 3 HDMI sockets, which are already filled with other things (cable box and 2 games consoles) and the fact that my tv doesn't like having an HDMI switcher (it can't auto see what's connected to the switcher) so I've decided to sell it (my tv's apps work just fine so don't really need the apps on the Apple TV box).
