Of course he would.
He made iTunes available for Windows once he was basically told if he wanted the iPod to succeed he had no choice.
That was a different time though. For instance, iMessage for Android isn't a thing and Tim Cook's response was to go buy an iPhone. So it's very clear for some things Apple keeps as iDevice exclusive so you have to buy into that ecosystem.

But for some services like Apple TV+ or Music, you can get it on Android. I think it made sense back in the MP3 player days to cater to Windows users. Mac was still just growing and it took until the mid 2000s before the platform was popular enough.

Good that it is finally available on Android. No reason to not have it especially since Smart TVs from various brands were having it for a few years now. This should definitely help gain some subscribers.

There is no Google TV App on the Apple TV store, only on iPad/iOS. I can think of approximately every single Android TV that has Apple TV available.

Google doesn't have a subscription streaming service like Apple, so there is less motivation for them to get their GoogleTV app everywhere. You can rent/purchase movies from GoogleTV app but if someone has an AppleTV device surely they're far more likely to use Apple for this, so Google probably thinks there's no value in having it on AppleTV. As for playing previously purchased/rented content - I think you can do it via YouTube app. Airplay is another option of course.

What's going on is Apple is choosing to boost services revenue. It's always about the money. 💰💰💰
What an insightful analysis.

With Apple, it's about products.

iMessage doesn't make sense on Android because iMessage isn't a product, it's a feature of iOS.

Apple TV+ is a product.

Major disappointment. As others have pointed out, purchased content is a no-go. I have well over 100 movies and TV shows purchased through iTunes/AppleTV over the years and none of them are available. I do have Apple TV+ through Apple One, so the app isn't totally useless, but its utility is a lot less than I had hoped.

My guess is that the content you bought on iTunes/AppleTV doesn't have an legal agreement for playback on Android currenty. Television and movie companies like to milk every digital platform separately.

Same as that we cannot watch downloaded purchased content in 4K; it is limited to HD 1080p. You have to stream it for 4K, which is a problem when you have a slow (or erratic) DSL connection. (not sure if "content caching" in macOS could help here).

I think the moment has passed, since Apple had to accept RCS and apps like WhatsApp are nigh universal, but there was a (brief) moment where Apple could have sold access to an iMessage app for a small recurring revenue stream, and just dominate the messaging infrastructure of the USA, and probably other countries where Apple has a decent footprint (eg. the UK).

Someone at Apple HQ must be kicking themselves.

Why does it really matter to you? Does this impact your life personally in any way?

Just downloaded to have a look. Straight off, the UX is dire. There is literally no login/account section. You have to click the accept free trial button to login. I only worked that out after struggling to find how to login and deciding to try the accept trial button as a last resort. Now I'm logged in but because there's no account tab I can't log out or see subscription settings. The only nav options are AppleTV+, MLS, Downloads and Search. 🤷‍♂️

I haven't owned an actual Apple TV device since v3, instead I use the built in apps on my TV or fire stick, so this is good for those who no longer want any actual apple devices but are tied into the ecosystem in terms of Apple TV media purchases, like me. more reasons to consider moving away from the iPhone in the next year or so.

just one caveat, you only seem to be able to see bonus content on movie/series purchases on actual apple products, which does suck.

There is a big difference that you are ignoring, though, iMessage doesn’t directly make Apple any money.
It indirectly makes money by helping sell iPhones, but if they were to simply just bring it to Android it would make them no extra money. Even if they were to make it a subscription service they would still be losing money over actual iPhone sales.
Meanwhile, all of their services that actually make them money directly are available cross platform.
iTunes has been available on windows for 20 years because initially it’s sold more Apple product in the iPod, while also giving millions more people access to Apple’s Store where they could purchase music, movies, TV Shows, etc.
Same with Apple Music on Windows, Apple TV on Windows, iCloud for Windows. All of these services directly give money to Apple, even when being used on other platforms.
Same philosophy with android, Apple Music was made available on android just a couple months after iOS… Because it makes them more money. Same with Apple TV.

I'm only surprised that it took so long. This is a streaming service and you'd want as wide of an audience for your content as possible irregardless of the device the audience is using. I'm not sure why some are surprised by this or think that hell is freezing over.

That's a pretty nice looking Android phone. Wonder if that's what Apple is targeting for iPhone 18.
I imagine it’s an Opportunity Feature nd X8 or Galaxy S25+ ??
What on God’s green Earth is going on. What’s next, iOS will be open source or on other devices?! That definitely would be heaven on Earth.
What you don’t recall iTunes launching on Windows at all?! How well received and enjoyed that piece of kit was?!

Come on, you call yourself an Apple fan?!??

IOS open sourced for Android would be impressive IF idk. NeXTStep eventually was so who knows.
Ice water in hell all over again
Yes! Someone remembers Jobs quote when iTunes for Windows was released and it being THE best software for Windows.
Why'd it take so long?
Riiight!!???
No Android stan can spam us about how it launches five milliseconds faster on a Samsung than an iPhone.

They need a new benchmark test because they lose at everything that matters.

You have NO IDEA what you speak of! On typical average launch applications to a full rendering UI for an Android running 9400/8Elite is over a full second faster. Running through multiple tasks it becomes very significant!

GoogleTV is one of the top 3 live cable replacement/live broadcast streaming services out there and rocks!

Wrong. Once logged in, there is a circle in the upper right with your initials. Everything you say doesn't exist is in there, including SIGN OUT, Manage Apple Account and Manage Apple Subscription.

Nothing on mine. Have tried reinstalling, still the same. Obviously a bug somewhere then.
