Google doesn't have a subscription streaming service like Apple, so there is less motivation for them to get their GoogleTV app everywhere. You can rent/purchase movies from GoogleTV app but if someone has an AppleTV device surely they're far more likely to use Apple for this, so Google probably thinks there's no value in having it on AppleTV. As for playing previously purchased/rented content - I think you can do it via YouTube app. Airplay is another option of course.

And

The Google TV app isn't a comparable app to AppleTV, they're just named similarly...
You can’t subscribe to apps on Google TV?

Google TV is really a clone of an Apple TV (surprise). The difference being Apple TV+ is a service. But you can absolutely subscribe to services on Google TV just like you can on Apple TV.

I guess, yeah it’d be duplication, so fair call. They could still have it, and it could help with people transitioning from one ecosystem to another, but it’d probably be pretty niche.

Are you referring to the Google TV app or the Google TV device? The app is the relevant thing in the context of whether there is any point of Google supporting it on the Apple TV device, and I don't see any way to subscribe to services within the Google TV app.

From memory (I threw my Google TV in the bin) you could subscribe to services via the Google TV, the same as the Apple TV. I’m not sure about the app because I use Google as little as is humanly possible. What does the app actually do?

You have NO IDEA what you speak of! On typical average launch applications to a full rendering UI for an Android running 9400/8Elite is over a full second faster. Running through multiple tasks it becomes very significant!

Calm down. There are Android forums if you want to go wild.

I think you're thinking of the Google TV platform which runs on various streaming sticks, boxes, and smart TVs. This is more akin to Apple's tvOS and like on tvOS you can install apps and various services. Technically the devices are running Android TV OS and have an interface referred to as Google TV (which is a bit of a modification to the stock Android TV interface). But obviously Google can't add either an entire OS or an OS interface to Apple TV devices.

The Google TV mobile app (available on Android and Apple phones and tablets) is more like the Apple TV app. It serves as an aggregator linking to content from other tv/movie apps installed on the device, you can access and watch movies and shows that you have previously purchased or rented from Google, and it acts as a store front for purchasing and renting new content from Google (the store front functionality might be limited to Android). I think it can also act as a remote control for Google TV devices. However there is no subscription streaming service for the Google TV app like there is for the Apple TV app (Apple TV plus). Without a subscription streaming service that's dependent on the app there's not much point in making it available for Apple tvOS. The functionality to play Google purchased/rented movies and shows isn't actually dependent on the Google TV app - it's also available in the YouTube app, which is already available on Apple tvOS. Furthermore YouTube does have a subscription service (YouTube Premium) so Google has an incentive to nudge people towards it.
