Original Chromecast was great for its time but it's a dog now with limited h.264 and vp8 codec support at 1080p30 max. Prefer Fire TV Stick 4K hardware and remote over Chromecast with Google TV but prefer Android TV interface. Suggest waiting for new devices that supports AV1 hardware decode which none of the current popular devices from Amazon, Google and Apple have.

Fire TV Stick 4K sucks cause it does not support Atmos on Netflix. I still am not sure why but it just doesn't. I believe the new Chromecast with Google TV does do Atmos on Netflix which makes it the cheapest streaming device available that does that. I may elect to get it just for the support.

Chromecast with Google TV does do Atmos on Netflix... but no Atmos on Apple TV...

Sounds like a Netflix app issue. Netflix Atmos is supported via Kodi + addon. I have both devices and like the Fire TV Stick 4K more and it's often on sale for ~$30 plus the remote is better. Click button is too small on the Chromecast remote so you often end up pressing the wheel.

When is Google TV coming out on iOS??? My family has Apple products glad Apple TV is on Google now but when does Google TV come on iOS??? There is no specific date on when Google TV is on IOS but I am glad Apple TV and Apple Music is on Google now!!!

Apple doesn't need to invest engineering and development resources to develop a $50 AppleTV anymore than Porsche need to develop a $20,000 911. What profit would Apple make? and it would cannibalise sales from the ATV 4K. (Where I'm guessing they make a very nice profit, why build 15 $50 ATVs to make the same profit you can from 1 ATV4K sale?). It's about profit not marketshare.
Google can do that for them and that way apple make money on ATV+ subscriptions from people who would never have paid for an ATV in the first place.
Someone never played Lemonade Stand growing up. The Apple TV devices are currently nowhere near the sweet spot for profit.

Look, I own four Apple TV devices currently. Two of them are 4Ks, I will INSTANTLY buy the next one, but they're leaving money on the table by NOT making a lower-cost device.

I'm not saying it has to be $50, but $149 for the HD or $179 4K is laughably uncompetitive in a market where a mostly comparable Roku device starts at $25.

Roku literally sells one with a soundbar for $179.

At this point, it's hard to justify the price of the Apple TV for anyone, even the most devout Apple nerds like myself.

Does anyone know if the next gen Apple TV is incoming soon?

I wanted to upgrade from ATV 4 to 4K, but I gotta feeling that they'd announce the next gen immediately after the return window is over if I were to get it now. 🙈
I'm in the same boat and just waiting....hate the ads on Youtube (which my bro doesn't get on his 4K)...I have the ATVHD and am waiting for the newest to come out as the 4K is long in the tooth.

Kind of a big difference between a phone and a sub$50 device.
Continuing to speak hypothetically , no there isn't.

I didn't say they should give away an iPhone 12 Pro Max. They could easily build a super low end device to hook people in (use iPhone 7 internals and a low end LCD screen instance) and give them away (or sell at a loss) to earn a larger user-base to sell services to. Using your argument, they can afford it.

As I stated in my original comment to you, that is not Apple's model. It is quite clear they have zero interest in producing cheap hook products in hopes of selling services down the road. It isn't how they operate.

True. But they're leaving so much money on the table by not having their own $50 device.

Are they though? The existing Apple TV hardware is not meant to generate any significant profit. It’s meant to keep users in the Apple ecosystem. Selling iPhones and iPads is where the money is made. Allowing iTunes on Windows PCs wasn’t intended to sell music to Windows users, it as meant to sell iPods that created a halo effect on the rest of the ecosystem. I know Windows users who bought an iPod that led to buying a Mac. I include myself in that category.

If he doesn’t have ads, he’s probably got YouTube Premium.

While the 4K is a good few years old now, long in the tooth it is not.

Having bought a new 4K tv for the bedroom over the holidays, I too and waiting for the next ATV to come out. For now, I am using a fire stick 4K and a chromecast with google tv my son got me for the holidays. Neither is that bad tbh. The google is more glitchy than the fire stick, but they do the job.

Neither, however, holds a candle to the TVOS interface. They're both just a mess and don't get me started on Roku.

Also, a note, unless its changed, google tv doesnt do well with restricted content for kids. I think i heard the next tvos is supposed beef up restrictions for kids.
