I don’t mind it. Makes sense to name the App/service the same. Its like using the free app but you can also subscribe in the app to have more content. I was afraid that Tim will do Apple TV Max or Ultra next.
Maybe Apple is going to offer an add supported free tier for those who own an AppleTV…

I've alway thought it's a bit odd calling the device the Apple TV... It's not a TV.

If Apple TV+ is becoming Apple TV the service, perhaps this device will become a Pod.
PlayPod ( console like )
StreamPod
ScreenPod
TVPod

I downloaded the Apple TV app on my LG to watch Apple TV, while my friend uses his Apple TV to watch Apple TV

Good thing, then, that there’s not a channel called Apple TV nor a show named as such 😅

If there were it’d be, “I’m watchin Apple TV on Apple TV on Apple TV on my Apple TV”. Yikes.

Will iCloud+ be rebranded to simply iCloud?

Not a chance in hell since iCloud has a free tier and Apple TV doesn’t. At least I think that’s the thinking here…

Now you can watch Apple TV shows on the Apple TV app on your Apple TV but if you don't subscribe to Apple TV, you can't watch Apple TV shows on the Apple TV. You will only be able to watch non Apple TV content in the Apple TV app on your Apple TV

It does plug into a TV though?

I mean ... it's also odd we are calling things "MacBooks" -- they aren't books.

Which is frankly an issue only in a world devoid of context where people think things are more confusing than they actually are (more often than not, I feel like Macrumours like to over-complicate stuff just for the sake of manufactured criticism).

Everybody already refers to Apple's video streaming service as Apple TV. Everyone knows what it is. The plus is kinda superfluous, removing it streamlines the naming convention, and really, nobody in real life will ever say it like what people here do (TV app for TV+ on Apple TV).

I won't be surprised if we see other services start to drop the "plus" in their naming as well.

I think maybe I kinda get it. We all used to say we’re “watching tv”, meaning the collective of programming available. We also had a TV we were watching tv on. Something is “on TV.”

Never mind, I don’t get it. We’d be watching tv on Apple TV on our Apple TV plugged into our TV.

I’d call it Apple stream for the service or maybe just Apple Originals…

Apple TV is just the hardware in my mind.

That seems like quite an achievement considering that most any proper noun formatted "[Something] TV" back through the dawn of the medium has meant TV channels or programming.

The only one who watches AppleTV is my son who watches Snoopy on one of 2 Roku TVs, branded and sold as Roku TV Select and Plus, and me when there are new episodes of Severance, but that’s on a Google TV.

We have 3 AppleTV boxes but I only watch the other services on those. Just the way they are sprinkled around the house.

And I never watch Roku content but they still insist on showing Rated R posters on my kid’s TV despite the content filters being set.

Bummer on the posters, I had no idea! I’m running a Firewalla and have all of Roku’s advertising and tracking disabled, so I haven’t see it.

That sucks…

Why was there 3 different Apple TV blah blah blah in the first place?

We have Apple TV as the App, Apple TV+ as the streaming service and Apple TV set top box.

Wouldn’t it have made more sense just to have Apple TV as the 1 app streaming service? I mean Hulu doesn’t have a Hulu app plus a Hulu plus service. It’s just Hulu same thing with Netflix. Why was there two Apple TVs involved to begin with? It should’ve only been Apple TV as the app which is the streaming service and then Apple TV the set top box, plain and simple.

We were looking for something to watch and saw the price has gone up to $12.99. I wonder if they'll include a permanent free subscription with new Apple TVs. Doesn't have to be the whole library, just a rotating selection of shows/seasons. Having an "always on" subscription sounds more appealing than playing the promo game. I personally would be more likely to watch and then upgrade for a few months if everything wasn't behind a paywall. Like Costco samples for streaming.

New Apple TV imminent with a different name.

EDIT: Apple Home sounds like an option.

While the other comments are amusing, I think your comment is the correct take.

That’s the only thing that makes sense. Has to be a rename. It was already confusing. This would add clarity.

Huh? “Apple Home” already exists. It’s the name of Apple’s smart home app and increasingly the ecosystem itself and a replacement for the HomeKit name on compatible products.

Moving from Apple TV and Apple TV to Apple Home and Apple Home isn’t helpful.

The Apple TV puck is more like a pod: HomePod, HomePod TV, tvPod…

Apple TV (the box), soon to be running HomeOS is part of the Home lineup and fits in the "pod" category. HomePod, HomePod mini, HomePod TV.

This lineup makes sense to me:

Then next Spring, a HomePad is added to the Home lineup that can control any HomePod as speakers and their attached TVs anywhere in your home.

But you can use the iTunes store app on your iPhone to buy Movies to play on the TV app on your iPad.

The name isn’t what we’re talking about. It’s that there will most likely be a rename.
