Apple has argued in court that Apple the theater company and Apple the hardware company are confusing. I think it's safe to assume that the hardware and the streaming being different are definitely too confusing too.

Either that, or Apple's making a bad faith argument in court. 🤔

Not remotely the same thing.

Buried in its announcement about "F1: The Movie" making its streaming debut on December 12, Apple has also announced that Apple TV+ is being rebranded as simply Apple TV.

A single line near the end of the press release states "Apple TV+ is now simply Apple TV, with a vibrant new identity," though Apple's website has yet to be updated with any changes, so we're unsure on the details of the new identity. Apple's blurb about the streaming service at the bottom of the press release also reflects the updated naming.Apple of course offers its set-top box hardware under the Apple TV name while also offering the Apple TV app across various platforms as a hub for Apple TV+ and other content. As a result, offering Apple's streaming service itself under the same name may lead to some confusion, and the reason for the change is unclear.

I’m guessing they want to refresh the Apple TV with some sort of Ai capability. New chip and ram upgrades since cheaper to produce now. Probably will be renamed and rebranded and this was one of the things they needed to do to rebrand.

The Apple TV box is turning into a smart home hub thing then?

"Apple Home connects to your TV and manages all your smart devices with Siri and Apple Intelligence integration. It also plays Apple TV"

Probably consistent with the broader streaming industry that have their own apps and identically named channels offered within other vendors apps (including channels available for subscription under AppleTV app). I do agree that might make sense for future AppleTV box to replace TV with something else - maybe the Apple Hub Mini !? Without a camera would be fine since mine is hidden 😀

Amazon has always had one name. Fire TV is the app, Fire TV Stick hardware. Maybe Apple following. Apple TV Streamer. Whatever they choose for the box name.

Great. Can’t wait to watch some Apple TV on Apple TV on my Apple TV (service/app/device, for those for which this wasn’t obvious)…

“Hello Apple Service? Apple TV isn’t working for me…”

This is a horrible tv watching experience even with true multitasking on iPhone…
I get a large 16 inch portable monitor and iPhones wonderful speakers in a portable package that cost less than buying an iPad that maxes out at 13” for the iPad Air. When travelling I can even connect to a hotel or AirBnB tv and don’t have to hassle with additional devices. How is this a terrible experience for minimize device ownership, portability and simplicity.

This was super confusing from the get go. They finally did what should have been from the beginning.

New Names:
Apple TV + is now Apple TV

Apple TV now Apple TV +

Problem solved.

"Can't innovate anymore, my ass!"

This reminds me of 'Apple Music' and the killing of iTunes (app) and totally neutering the iconic iTunes brand. Apple Music? The Music streaming service? The Music iOS app? The Music macOS app? Any Music playing out of your Apple device or Mac? Google search wants to know! Not that a bug-free, feature rich, intuitive app like 'Music' for macOS would ever needs any kind of troubleshooting.

Ironically Apple was never more consistent with names than today. It got way more chaotic after they released the first iPhone and it's easier than ever (with some exceptions)
Current as in the past couple of years. Apple TV/Apple TV+/TV app aside, the thing they're doing with the suffixes aren't great and people get confused, and the naming convention is being made fun of elsewhere.

MacBook Pro M_
MacBook Pro M_ Pro (what a mouthful to say)

CarPlay
CarPlay Ultra (the discussions related to this keep getting this confused with the regular CarPlay)

AirPods goes (no suffix)/Pro/Max but iPhones go e/mini/(no suffix)/Plus/Air/Pro/Pro Max. iPad has (no suffix)/mini/Air/Pro, but the largest Pro doesn't get the Max suffix. I could go on and on.

Yet another example that Apple's Leadership needs more shakeups cause why are we calling the Streaming service the same name as the Streaming Box?! This isn't much different from HBO Max becoming Max and then reverting back to HBO Max. At least, that's what I expect.

There will be Apple TV Air with limited number of programs per week, Apple TV with ads, Apple TV pro to watch movies and series without ads and finally Apple TV pro max with sports as well.

Similarly, we never watch Apple TV on our Apple TV, and only watch Apple TV on our Roku TV. We also watch Roku on our Roku.
The only one who watches AppleTV is my son who watches Snoopy on one of 2 Roku TVs, branded and sold as Roku TV Select and Plus, and me when there are new episodes of Severance, but that’s on a Google TV.

We have 3 AppleTV boxes but I only watch the other services on those. Just the way they are sprinkled around the house.

And I never watch Roku content but they still insist on showing Rated R posters on my kid’s TV despite the content filters being set.
