Honestly, they should have named the streaming service after an apple cultivar, like Gala or Envy or Pippin or something, like they did with the Macintosh.

Apple TV soon to get ads, with Apple TV+ tier being ad free 😂
I think this is likely part of the rationale for the name change. It will mirror Apple News and Apple News+ - a free/low cost tier and a premium tier for the same service. Everyone other streaming service now has an ad-supported tier, and I believe Apple TV will be no different.

It needs a whole different name, like "Apple Streaming", or something without Apple entirely.

They need to separate the store where you buy TV/Movies from the Streaming portion.

Just dropping the +, does not accomplish this.

I also have the same problem everyone else is, where you have to explain in extra detail how to even sign up for this streaming service.

Just open the Apple TV app on your Apple TV and watch the latest Apple TV shows!

Hopefully they get at least the branding right this time and decide between TV & tv in their logos and word marks.

The only way this makes sense is if you plan to release a new Apple TV device with a different name. I think it's a good idea to make a name more different than AppleTV and AppleTV+. The SVOD is more popular so I guess it makes sense to make the bigger change for the less popular product. Don't get me wrong AppleTV the device is a great device and probably the most underated Apple device.
I wonder what name will be given

Just when I thought Apple's product naming couldn't get even more confusing...

So now you'll have users confused on if you're talking about the Apple TV hardware or the app that can show up on TVs that aren't made by Apple. Then you have them confused on if the show is one done by Apple or one done by HBO or other services that can appear in the Apple TV app.

What a mess.

Hot take: Apple’s naming schemes are much better than most of their competitors. (See any television manufacturer’s model names.) This is clearly teeing up a rebrand of their “home” devices, and outside of some snark online isn’t going to create any meaningful confusion among customers.
