it is very easy to comprehend.
You need an Apple Tv to watch Apple TV on your Apple Tv with a TV set which also may have Apple Tv.
Tim Cook: see? we are so excited to see all your confused faces :) Its a best Apple TV on Apple Tv with Apple TV at Apple TV!

Well this seems stupid.

(Does this mean that instead of subscriptions, we will have to buy a new Apple TV box every year?)

(Does this mean that when/if Apple comes out with a display to connect to the box, that uses the app to show the show, that we will have 4 things called Apple TV?)

(Does this mean that Apple has permanently given up on a TV size display?)

Apple had been doing such a good job rebranding its OS’s to xOS26, but failed to do same to product generations bc marketing, and now this. Jos and his team need to revisit and fix both hardware product and Apple TV service branding.

Maybe Apple has to wait to see the confusion in the marketplace before reverting back to Apple TV+ label, like HBO or Disney or Hulu or any of those other companies who took a clear tjing and made it worse.

I’d assume it means a change for the AppleTV hardware expected this week. But what do you change that to? Would it change the tvOS name?

Will be interesting to see what they do. Maybe a shift from the TV name for the box itself to focus on the fact that it does FaceTime, gaming, apps, etc. and isn’t just “tv” anymore? (Though we still have “iPhone”)

maybe the set top box is being rolled into the HomePad product?

This is the obvious answer. A home theater focused HomePod that is soundbar like and also an AppleTV. Really just make any Home Pod able to be an AppleTV with an HDMI out too for people that want a device to plug into their existing setup. One device category for everything “home” and let people use them how they want.

The more I think about this, the more it makes some sense, especially if there is a Home POD with a screen coming. The Home Pods with out a display, you can plug into any TV and have the same functionality.

ok I can see one of their updated products this week/month being an Apple TV box with a slightly different name. I can’t see them having the service and box with the same name.

Agreed. I think this might be in preparation for the Apple TV box being about to get a name change.

I really hope that, if we are right, this might also be a clue that the announcement of the new Apple TV device, together with its new name, is quite close now (maybe even this week).

Fifteen years after getting my first Apple device, an iPhone and in subsequent years adding iPad and Apple Watch to my setup, I'm now really keen to try a few more Apple devices and Apple TV (or whatever it might be about to be called) is high on my list.

So a mistake...since there is no difference between apple tv hardware box and streaming service
Hbo Max went to just Max but returned to Hbo Max...same will happen here too IF apple doesnt rename also the Apple Tv box

This will make things easier for people .
Nah glad Apple is dropping the “+” from its branding it just seemed like a service industry fad of yesteryear. Reminds me of AppleTV + …, an unfinished sentence for example + games, etc.

Hot take: Apple’s naming schemes are much better than most of their competitors. (See any television manufacturer’s model names.) This is clearly teeing up a rebrand of their “home” devices, and outside of some snark online isn’t going to create any meaningful confusion among customers.
I'd disagree on the lack of confusion.

The Apple TV app is available on non-Apple hardware including Android and Samsung TVs.

Apple TV+ is the addon service you need to pay for to access additional Apple specific content within the app, but not everything needs you to pay that fee and not everything is Apple only content.

But the rebranding isn't complete so maybe they'll clean it up in other ways.

I know this sounds more confusing, but think theyve named it what everyone was calling it anyway.

Apple TV+ becomes Apple TV
Apple TV the app is still there. Just now it contains paid content and free content. Like Spotify paid and Spotify free.
Apple TV box needs a new name though.

Apple should scrap the hobby AppleTV box and just focus on the App and Service. I connect my iPhone to a portable monitor and use the iPhone speakers and works very well, only problem is that iOS 26 doesn’t have true multitasking as in when video is projected on the external monitor, I cannot do anything else on the device like checking messages without the external monitor going into mirroring mode. Apple give us true multitasking please.

Technically the app is simply the TV app, not the Apple TV app.

Edit: I stand corrected. Despite only being named "TV" on devices, they refer to it as "the Apple TV" app on their website.

With rumours hinting that Apple might be about to take smart homes more seriously (HomePod Mini refresh, possible HomePod with display next year, cleaning up HomeKit naming, and even talk or tabletop robotic arms, FaceID doorbells etc in the further future) taken together with this next Apple TV refresh rumoured to be giving us a more powerful AI-enabled A-Series SoC that could do quite a lot of processing locally and act as a hand-off device for stuff HomePods can't do I'm wondering whether Apple might be looking for a new name for its Apple TV device that better reflects that wider role in a smart home setup.

You've already mentioned "FaceTime, gaming, apps etc." making it not just a "tv" anymore but I wonder if a future direction that we're about to see might mean that we might also need to add "smart home brain" or something like that to your list.
