Apple is canceling popular comedy series Mythic Quest after a four season run, with the show to wrap up after a re-released season 4 finale that's coming later this week.

Mythic Quest starred Rob McElhenney, Charlotte Nicdao, Danny Pudi, and David Hornsby, all of whom played characters that worked at the fictional Mythic Quest Studios creating, designing, and running a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game. The show provided a satirical and humorous look at the inner workings of video game development.

Season four was not initially meant to be the show's final season, so the season four finale has been updated with a new ending that will provide Mythic Quest fans with closure. In a statement to Deadline, series producers Megan Ganz, David Hornsby and Rob McElhenney said they wanted to be able to say goodbye.
Endings are hard. But after four incredible seasons, Mythic Quest is coming to a close. We're so proud of the show and the world we got to build -- and deeply grateful to every cast and crew member who poured their heart into it. To all our fans, thank you for playing with us. To our partners at Apple, thank you for believing in the vision from the very beginning. Because endings are hard, with Apple's blessing we made one final update to our last episode -- so we could say goodbye, instead of just game over.
Mythic Quest was one of the first shows that launched on Apple TV+, debuting in February 2020. There have been four seasons and two special episodes, including one that was filmed remotely on iPhones during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Apple's decision to cancel Mythic Quest follows reports of Apple TV+ losses. Apple TV+ is losing as much as $1 billion per year as Apple works to lure subscribers and add more content to the streaming service.

Mythic Quest has spawned a spinoff show called Side Quest, a four episode miniseries that explores the lives of Mythic Quest employees and players. The final episode of season four aired on March 26 and ended with a cliffhanger. The re-edited final episode with a new ending will be available this week.

I’ve never watched the show, so I have no idea whether it deserved to be cancelled or not, nor whether it’s any good or not.

But I can say, having been left high and dry by many abruptly cancelled good shows over the years, that I really appreciate at least going back and updating the end so it doesn’t insult people who enjoyed the show.

That said, this also highlights why I hate the entire “keep making more of it until it jumps the shark and sucks” method of US serial production. Even if this season was known to be the last one and planned that way from the end of the third season, it still means that the writers, by definition, don’t know where the destination is until at best the start of the last season. And if you want to write a tight, coherent story, you need to know from the start roughly where the beginning, middle, and end are.

Contrast with series that have a predetermined and fixed length from the start more common in other countries—they know exactly where they’re going from episode one, so they waste no time with filler, and aren’t going to jump the shark unless they were badly written from the start.

In the U.S. system anything good is doomed to eventually go bad, because they will just keep making more of it until it sucks and people stop watching.

It would be so much better to let a show know it will be ending before the final season so they can do a proper final season instead of re-editing or changing the final episode with reshoots but it seems they don't decide until it's too late. Like Big Bang Theory/Young Sheldon had planned endings.

It's not only Apple but all the streaming services and broadcast tv do the shows wrong so much of the time, it's why I'd rather watch movies than tv shows.

Good. I loved the first 2 seasons, pain-watched the 3rd, and haven't gone beyond episode 2 of this latest season.

The only characters I like are Rob McElhenney and Charlotte Nicdao (Ian and Poppy). All the other characters are cringe, and not fun watching. The lesbian romance isn't funny or even watchable, and that's most of the show now. It WAS about creating video games, but it's now mostly about character relationships - which aren't great.

Unfortunately this means more show may be cancelled for Apple to save money. Apple TV+ is loss leading product essentially, they hope to attract users to buy Apple products in long run for enhanced viewing experience (which so far has worked, look at iPhone sales). [this method is how Microsoft sells Xbox at a loss but makes money on accessories and games and subscription]

Unlike most studio, Apple so far haven’t removed the show for tax write off and pretended that show was never made or existed in first place, so they could’ve shopped Mythic Quest to other networks. Looks like creators decided to just end the show instead. (Although they could’ve made series finale movie to wrap things up which is better, and likely Apple would’ve green lit the project)

As someone said before, the first two seasons were awesome. Season 3 was "meth", season 4, was really disappointing. Season 4 threw out the quirks of working in the gaming industry and it tried to develop the characters more, which just ended up awkward. I'm sure the writers had good intentions, but it didn't translate well.

Never did watch this one

Reading the comments seems like I’ll check out the first season at least and see if it grabs me

All the characters became more and more unlikable with each season and it became more of character drama than satirizing the gaming industry like Silicon Valley did for tech. It was a struggle to finish the 4th season. F. Murray Abraham's character wasn't vital, but him getting #metooed and them killing off his character didn't help.
