Because stealing other people's content is a crime as it should be. Have you ever made a living producing, writing or creating content be it books, articles, videos, movies, etc.? I don't think you would ask why if you had.

I don't care what the streamers charge. If I think it is too expensive or simply not worth what they are charging, I pass on it. I don't steal it. There is no excuse despite the insane rationalizations I frequently read when this kind of a topic comes up. The irony is in forums like this there are large numbers of participants who make their living producing one kind of content or another. Yet, when it is content owned, controlled or otherwise distributed by someone else or a big corporation they think stealing it is okay because they don't like the price.
what does this have to do with apple acquiring Warner brothers? if people want pirated content they go on Pirate Bay and torrent it 🤷‍♂️

yknow what, why the hell not, the story of Warner Bros. Discovery is beyond messy (thank you Techdirt for keeping me knowledgable) and I’m fine with Apple having all that content for ATV

While Apple could handily out-bid Paramount Skydance for WB-Discovery and there would not be anti-trust issues, Larry Ellison is very tight with the Administration so anti-trust isn't really a deal-breaker if he wants the whole company.

Also, does Apple want to own cable networks like CNN and HGTV?

My guess is if Ellison primarily wants the film and television studios, CNN and the cable networks, then I could see a deal where Apple buys WB's back catalog of film and produced TV shows (perhaps with the DC universe IP staying with the studio).

I would resubscribe to Apple TV+ if it bought Discovery or CNN, 100%. Their documentaries are very good!

Similarly, if Disney was ever open to selling NatGeo, that would be a huge plus for Apple TV+ too!

We could lock down ALL of society, and piracy will never fully be stopped.

Must it be brought up in every single streaming thread?

If you disagree with it, no argument ... just don't do it yourself and let others do what they are going to do.
No. It is not okay no matter who is doing it and those defending it in some way, however vague it may be, are condoning it. Stealing is not okay nor is turning a blind eye to it. A thief is a thief whether they steal a dime or a million dollars or whether it comes out of an individual's pocket or a corporation's pocket.

"Must it be brought up in every single streaming thread?"

It's brought up in every one of these threads because someone always defends stealing content and there are a lot of creators on these forums who have been seriously economically harmed by piracy and related behaviors.

They should do it. Apple TV needs content. You can’t maintain the high quality of new productions and while wanting to increase content output. Either they do what Netflix does and produce everything they can to fill their catalog which will lower quality, or they buy historical catalogs and maintain the quality of their own production. They will not only own Warner Bros movies, but also DC movies and the rights to those characters. They should do the same with AI to keep up with competition.

Scam service you pay monthly expecting to have a service like Netflix. Instead you need to pay additionally to watch PER content.

A much better option than the Ellisons' taking it over. Might even convince me to finally take up Cupertino on the free three-month Apple TV trial it keeps offering me.

AI too, right?

All the AI companies everyone is hailing and wanting Apple to "partner with" ... we should string them all up for mass theft and piracy, correct?
Laws absolutely need to be updated to mitigate the harm that otherwise unchecked capitalistic tech businesses and people are inflicting on others.

However, no one defended piracy here in this thread initially, and this was brought up without any reason to bring it up. Kinda odd tbh.

Then I guess it is up to the content creators to figure this out. Have fun with that!

It’s probably just Warner Bros movie catalog, studio and maybe subsidiaries like HBO and DC. I bet Apple does not want the reality TV trash content and news channels or any channel of WarnerBros Discovery.

It makes a lot of sense in a lot of respects. Apple likely want the full ownership rights of their top shows like Ted Lasso, which it would give them.

I'm more interested in who ends up buying Cartoon Network. WBD just isn't interested in family content at all yet between the years of say OG Ben 10 through We Bare Bears nearly everything they made was golden. It is currently impossible to find the whole of (say) Regular Show, Steven Universe or even Generator Rex on any streaming platform. Opening that up to somebody like Netflix who would just dump the lot online would be most welcome.

But if Apple steals it's fine.

So Apple is going to spend 40 billion in cash for WB? How will they recoup this cost? Why would WB be selling if streaming was so profitable?

It would be nice to add such a catalogue but not many companies are doing as well as they hoped with streaming.
