The shame of it is… Netflix content is mostly garbage. It’s a firehose of reality and true crime junk. But I guess that’s what people want. Apple on the other hand has a lot of really great original shows. I think the problem is they also have a lot of stinkers and they spend just as much money on the stinkers (i.e. ridiculous sums) as they do on the good shows.
I have to disagree on this. Netflix has a lot of great original shows that aren’t reality or true crime related.

Watched 1/2 of Ted Lasso S1 and stopped

I got some exposure to it at a family house when visiting for a week and after a couple episodes I was over the shtick.

It seems like a concept that demoed well when being pitched, without thinking about extrapolating it out to a full show and what that would look like (or not)

Yeah who actually pays for AppleTv+? They should buy Paramount Plus that way they could equal Netflix’s views for 3 days in a month. 😂

Did I read that right, The second season of Severance is 20 million per episode? If it’s anything like the first season it shouldn’t cost that much at all. I mean the set is mainly just one room, and some snaking hallways. Game of Thrones shot was all over the place and it was 15 million at its height.

Apple’s biggest problem is hiring ‘A’ list actors. Shows should be story driven not actor driven.

I actually really liked Foundation. Apple just needs to do what they were doing a few months ago and have movies from other studios be available on the platform. I liked being able to rewatch Blade Runner 2049 and other movies with TV+ only

Tim Cook decided to get Apple into Hollywood just as people stopped watching that stuff in favor of YouTube. It was a bad move, and it’s good that he’s decided to start cutting back on the amount of investor money he’s wasting.

There may be sense of truth to that. I wonder what would happen if Apple would close a deal with top creators at Youtube or Nebula to make some shorter format stuff. Would be interesting.

Let me save you some time

"Don't bother"

Writing is awful.
It felt like a showcase for visuals and little else
Poor writing is a common problem for today's show. The last show I watched with fantastic writing was Better Call Saul S7. Even this, comparing to its S1-6, has a worse script.

Poor script makes the show unprofessional, makes viewer quickly jump out of the play.

The only real reason why I have Apple TV+ is because it’s include with my student Apple Music subscription. The last series I watched on there was ‘Manhunt’. While it was good, it wasn’t something that was fantastic like Ted Lasso and Severance was. I want to watch Presumed Innocent, but other than that, there really isn’t much that I want to watch on that service.

Once my student subscription is over, I highly doubt I’ll keep ATV+. At this point, I’m content with just having Netflix, Hulu bundle (w/ D+ and ESPN+) and Max subscriptions.

I wish Apple had spent all of this money on getting gaming to work on the mac. Acquire some studios, get some Apple Arcade exclusives, make a good emulation layer for Windows games. Any serious effort would be welcome.

Agreed.

Gaming is something that actually makes money.

Apple should know this since they profit handsomely from all the toxic and addictive, essentially a casino, gaming apps on their iOS App Store ... where they are all too happy to get their cut.

service is too sanitized. I think they have a very large can of apple commercial sanitization spray on hand and use it liberally.

also a rule of thumb is you can't spend your way to success in a creative industry.

with the current HW configuration(8GB base RAM) and locked HW config, I double the effort of porting quality games is not so easy at all. Xbox loses fight to PS5 just because the weakest variant (series S)

Not entirely surprising. Netflix were essentially the pioneers of modern tv/movie streaming. The only other services that come close are your major studios and networks that already had decades worth of tried and tested content to attract subscribers.

Apple were always going to struggle from a standing start. They really should have partnered with a major studio from day one.

I never felt like Apple belonged in this market. Yes they have the cash to attract top tier people, but the established players offer way more content and the market likes to consume low quality reality TV mostly. How can you expect a large market share with this strategy? How will it turn a decent profit?

It’s like trying to built a top quality car and then realizing it’s going to be a commercial disaster.
I hate reality Tv but you’re right. People still want to talk about tv around the water cooler and the reality genre are the only shows you must watch as they happen. Nobody watches previous seasons of Apprentice for example.

As a product it’s absolutely awful, but it gives people a feelings that old fashioned linear TV gave them.
