I stopped watching The Morning Show after the 1st season. The actors were acting like they were making $2 million per episode. Aniston's fame is based on Friends. Friends was a mind numbing boring show.

I stopped watching Netflix a few years ago.

I have shows I like on Apple TV+. TV+ could add sports so there's consistent content all year.

I think they drop the entire tv series at once especially for those shelling out nearly $40 for Apple One and have been doing so for years.

The number of times I’ve had to explain to people the difference between an Apple TV (hardware) vs. Apple TV (app) vs Apple TV + doesn’t help the cause.

And while I know the headline of this article is focused on high cost of production, a price increase from $4.99 to $9.99 was a bad move when your streaming service holds such a minuscule market share

What I worry about here is....what if this leads to them killing the Apple TV hardware at some point

It will really be a garbage future if I have to use a Google or Roku box or something - ugh

Maybe they should actually market their shows instead of just AppleTV+...When I try to post something to social media about a show on TV+ that I like, you can never tag or interact with anything from the show, because there's nothing out there! You can spend all the money to make your shows and movies, but if people don't know about them and/or they can't create organic hype by interacting with your content on social media, then you probably won't get a big following.

What a shame. Netflix had really started ruining TV, so I found it very refreshing when Apple launched Apple TV+ with fewer, but better shows. I've personally really enjoyed Slow Horses, Criminal Record, For All Mankind, Severance, Ted Lasso, Morning Show, Presumed Innocent, Constellation and more.

The problem is that there is no business here

Running things at a massive loss with no actually realistic plan to get to profitability is no way to do things.

In a sane world, this service "should fail" with this approach

"The cost of the second season of Severance surged to over $20 million per episode"

Seriously, they need to set up some kind of internal enquiry/investigation into that. Definitely something not right there. There's absolutely no way, even with all the reasons they listed (COVID delays, script consultations) that each episode should cost anywhere near that. The cast isn't A-list, it's a mostly contained show using simple and inexpensive sets. On the face of it, it should be one of AppleTV+'s cheapest shows to produce.

The other problem is that much too little happens in one episode nowadays compared to each of the 20+ episodes of old. In the extreme, the plot that used to happen in a single episode of old is now stretched as an “arc” to an 8-episode season.
That's not necessarily a bad thing though. Back in the day, each episode was like a movie crammed into 45 minute episodes. Sure they were entertaining and fast paced, but most characters were hilariously one-dimensional and the plots were cookie-cutter simple.

Much of the evolution in long-form story telling over the past 15-20 years has happened precisely on TV, because it allows to tell the story in a more deliberate, nuanced way and to build rich and complex story arcs that before would never have been possible.

Now, can this be badly overdone? Yes and it has.

The main point, and I think you may agree, is that efficiency isn't necessarily a very useful metric in assessing the quality of entertainment or art.

Severance, Slow Horses, Foundation, Ted Lasso are all quality shows I have really enjoyed.

I agree with this. And I will argue that For All Mankind has a certain level of excellence to it as well, despite the story slowing down in the most recent season and the series being somewhat mired in soap opera. That being said, Wouldn't it be great if Apple stayed true(r) to its roots by showcasing content from new and upcoming writers, producers, etc instead of banking on "sure thing" names like Reese, Oprah, Nicole Kidman, and the like? The names cost bazillions and Apple is proving they aren't necessarily a sure thing.

Huge band of brothers fan. Strongly disliked The Pacific. Masters of the Air? Could have been great. Good visuals, decent cast except for the god awful Elvis lead that could have been replaced with a cardboard cutout, interesting story but horrible script. First episode should have established the core characters, given us a reason to care when they went into battle and some didn’t return. Hell given us the ability to tell one from the other for Pete’s sake. But no, they chose to waste 250m on a meandering plot that wasted three episodes in a POW camp and no payoff instead of air battles. Maybe it was for budget reasons, maybe the writers wanted to tell a different story than the one they were hired for, but regardless MotA was a disappointing end to the Playtone war trilogy that didn’t need to be.
as someone who isn't a huge war or history buff but was excited for this show, only to be disappointed: no notes.

you nailed my feelings exactly!

I thought the same thing. Really good show, but basically half of it takes place in one room!

Show of hands : Is anyone an actual regular subscriber to AppleTV? What I mean is disregarding free trials that come with hardware purchase, or "sign up for 1 month to watch a new season of ____" or as part of the Apple One bundle, etc? I get it through Apple One, but if it wasn't included I wouldn't look at what they have and say I gotta sign up for that and pay every month.. just curious if anyone does.

I am a regular TV+ subscriber since it started. Apple should include MLS in TV+.
