Clearly not the target demo here. Of all the nominated films, I only saw “Dune,” (meh) and hadn’t even heard of the others including CODA. But that’s been pretty much the case for the last couple of decades worth of Oscars. Yeah, really, really don’t care. But good for the cast and others associated with the film. It has been a long time since the Oscars broadcast could be considered “must see TV.”
That's many sentences. Could have just gone with:

I don't understand, shouldn't this have been nominated for an EMMY, since this was on TV and not in the theatres?
It wasn't "Made for Television" per se

It was released as a movie at the Sundance Film Festival prior to Apple purchasing the rights.

People don't tend to continue paying for a product or service that they don't enjoy/get value in using. They're the kinds of revenues that most companies can only dream of which speaks volumes about general customer satisfaction (Not folks posting on tech forums).

I disagree.

McDonalds: Still making billions of money, not the best food out there.

Jersey Shore: Lasted 6 seasons , doesn't make it a good tv show.

Jerry Springer: 26 years or so

Facebook: making a ton of billions of money , not the best social network service is it?

I am just saying, using income or popularity as a measure for making it BEST is incorrect. So Apple making billions does not make it the best. Some of their products can be said to be the best like airpods , iOS, iphones, iPad, MacOS but certainly they are not the best at everything a lot of their offerings are average or less than desirable .

There have been plenty of unusual occurrences and performances at the Oscars in the past. There was a streaker at the 1974 show. I wouldn't gauge the "prestige" of the award on the Will Smith/Chris Rock incident or on any of the other unusual things that have occurred over time.

well at least it wasn;t between the official host and the winner of the best actor , but if it was planned by them (staged) yes I guess it was always a low standard award.

A lot of people on MacRumors have been complaining that tv+ doesn't have anything going for it, invariably are the ones who got a free year and didn't bother watching – or worse didn't even subscribe and are just the typical Apple bashers here. In two years Apple has built a service based on quality and in those two years has won Emmy's and now an Academy Award for Best Picture that Netflix has been chasing for over a decade. I'll take quality over quantity any day.

What I said in a thread "Why is Apple TV+ not popular?" rings ever more true the longer Apple rolls out their tv+ strategy:

For one or two movies its better to rent or buy, the thing with subscription service is that you have to have a huge library of selection to make it worth while and that is why Netflix was successful. It gathered a lot of great shows and movies from every place and put in one service.

There is probably only a couple or few companies can do this like Disney simply because they have been making entertainment for the past 100+ years so their libraries are huge, not to mention they are made of a combined of group of other tv and movie production studios like ABC, ESPN, PIXAR, Marvel, Star Wars, Fox, National Geographic...

they literally own a percentage of human's film&tv production and that is very hard for Apple to match.

The Apple clone of the original movie is not very good. Typical American to make a (worse) copy of a great original, just because it is not 'american'. The original movie should be awarded, not this poor Apple clone.

Watch the original (French: La famille Bélier)

I read an article illustrating how CODA was a surprise front runner. It may not have had the most top votes but it was likely the least polarizing of the best pic nominees. Essentially CODA may have had mostly second and third best votes while a film like Power of the Dog or Drive My Car may have had a lot of number one of number nine best film votes.

Sounds plausible. Also, Power of the Dog director Jane Campion’s dumb comments about the Williams sisters at the Critic’s Choice awards likely worked against her.

I should clarify, I think there is a difference between “whatever” - which I’m using in context of junk nobody wants to watch, only so a service can say “We have over 1000 titles available!” and variety, which you are saying (and I agree with) is having different types of shows for different tastes. Absolutely Apple needs to continue offering different types of shows. I think they have struck a decent balance so far. The focus on prestige tv means their catalog is expanding slower, but I feel like the shows so far are mostly pretty good.
There is no such thing as "junk" content. For me the Kardashians reality show qualifies as a junk, but millions of people enjoy it. A westerns movie from the 60's may be a "must-watch" for me, while it is absolutely ignored by the majority. It is the same with music. I would assume that you won't be happy if only selected artists by Apple are present in Apple Music, instead of having a huge library of hundreds of thousands of artists and millions of songs. Why then you are so happy with having Apple decide what movies and shows are good enough to be streamed on Apple TV+?

This is the reason I haven’t watched CODA. La Famille Belier was a wonderful movie I have seen (maybe 3-4 times) in Australia. I mostly refuse to watch English (USA) Remakes that commercialise (and often butcher) an idea stolen. I'll always watch the original where I can, and stick to it.
The fact that Philippe Rousselet produced both films, and his desire to have it made with actual deaf actors and not hearing ones (which was the case with the original) really negates this "stolen" idea of yours.

I can’t guarantee that you’ll enjoy the content that I’ve enjoyed, obviously, but let me recommend the following on ATV+…
Greyhound
The Banker
Coda
For All Mankind
Little America
Little Voice
Tehran
Foundation
Acapulco
Dr. Brain
Schmigadoon
Earth at night in color
Long way up
The Mosquito coast
Home before dark
Swan song
Finch
9/11: inside the president’s war room
Hala
The Elephant Queen
Add Severance to the list. One of best series I watched in a while.

Don't forget Ted Lasso. Simply the best show I've seen in years.

Plagiarised? Isn't it a remake?

When in doubt, some folk like to go full on hyperbole. Hence the use of the ”plagiarised” which is this case is 100% wrong.

@InTeCredo to plagiarize something is to take something and pass it off as your own. The Producer of La Famille Bélier ALSO produced CODA - and he wanted to do it with Real Deaf Actors and not well known hearing actors (as was the case for the ‘original’).

Please explain how that fits in with your highly hyperbolic use of the word “plagiarize”? I assume you didn‘t know about the producer and his feelings, and therefore just created some random nonsense in an attempt to make a point (and fail),

Is Coda the first remake to win best picture?
No.

I don't know if there are others, but one I know off the top of my head is The Departed. It's a remake of Infernal Affairs.

As long as the publicity that comes from Oscar wins still boosts profits/income for the studios, actors, etc. that's all they really care about. Many people still buy/rent/stream or go to theaters to see movies and actors specifically because of an Oscar win or even just a nomination.

"Best" can be more on the subjective side or more on the objective side, and can be gauged a number of different ways e.g., best selling, best ratings, best warranty, best value, etc. To refer to anything as the "best" needs more context and rarely (if ever) is anything the best across the board or meant to be taken that way.

Well said - thank you!

Look at the list of movies. So depressing. Movies are supposed to be entertainment. Yes, entertainment - all the time. Please no virtue signaling. Apple TV+ is as horrible as it can get.
Historically, Oscar for Best Movie is a mixed bag. Sometimes heavy duty, sometimes entertaining.

Said who? You?

You’re categorically wrong. “Movies are not supposed to be entertainment”. Many are there to educate, some to remind (e.g. Schindler‘s List) and others are there to make you think and question.

Stop assuming the whole world wants only the films you want.
