They sure won't sell the iPhone 12 for $1000+ with this chip in it and turn around and sell an ATV with this chip for $200, unless they wait another year to come out with it.

There isn't really a good reason to not just support both DV and HDR10+ from most manufacturers POV. Its picking up traction slowly but surely. Amazon, Google, Panasonic, 20th Century Fox, Warner Bros, etc are pretty big companies to have a horse in the race. Meanwhile TV manufacturers have minimal investment and virtually no risk if they implement support.

Im sure the licensing deals are super secretive but will dolby license DV tech to a TV that supports HDR10+ as well? Do any current TVs support both? Amazon can play all 3 formats but even the TCL TVs with native FireOS only support DV.

I don't think any in the US do both but I did read that some Panasonic TVs support both but Ive never seen it confirmed.

HDR10+ is a Samsung product and Samsung has never supported DV.

If a TV were to support all formats, the TV would need a Dolby and Samsung license. Whether these licenses are free is another matter.

Then again they just threw in the A13 chip into a $399 iPhone.
Agree. The only reason NOT to throw the chip in everything (well everything that could use the power and gaming on the Apple TV in 4K HDR or playback of 4K higher than 60p needs something more than the A10X) is recouping the R&D cost and not undercutting the perceived value of the chip. But the Apple TV doesn’t compete with the phones. So while some nerds like us will be miffed no one is going to NOT buy the phone because they can get the same chip cheaper in a streaming box.

Vizio P Series got an update last year to support HDR10+ in addition Dolby Vision and HDR10, only Amazon Prime video supports HDR10+ currently with Netflix and Disney+ supporting DV and HDR10, it would be great if the new Apple TV supports all HDR formats but if HDR10+ support can be done over the air with software on a tv, I don’t see why Apple can’t do the same, only DV needs licensing and most TVs support it already except for Samsung who are the main TV OEMs that support HDR10+

I’d like to see graphics comparable to the best iOS games

The arcade games I've played remind me of a SNES , I want a PS4

With a bit of tweaking I’m sure Apple can do this

Yeah, we play Asphalt-8 (for years now). The Siri-Remote is great for this.
I don't know ... graphics (and models) look pretty good to me.

Strange, we never got Asphalt-9 on Apple-TV (tvOS) ... even though they have it on iOS. I thought it might be an Apple Arcade exclusive, but nope.

I’m currently playing strike force on iPad , graphics equivalent to anything on the ps4

If the new Apple TV can approach this level , the next gen of consoles might just have more competition than they thought

It's not about graphics or console power, it's about the games..

Wake me up when I can get DOOM Eternal and EVERSPACE on a new iOS Mac...

I'm not convinced that the masses buy into Apple TV. It's a true quality product. Here in the UK, the masses tend to be conservative with crappy Sky TV boxes OR Amazon stick or simply their TV smart apps. They want everything hardware wise for free or cheap - many are truly ignorant and know nothing about their data security - pretty clear when so many use Windows computers or Android phones. I'm convinced that these people - and there's many of them are simply not Apple TV customers nd will never be Apple TV + customers.
From what I can see with ATV+ is that Apple aren't going on the Amazon or Disney or Netflix path, they are setting their own standard and my gosh, it's actually 'intelligent' diverse and quite libel TV - quite the opposite from the Murdoch far right Sky TV here in the UK for example.
It's not going to be mass market and it's clear that for now, Apple knows that. But maybe, it's going to be on demand TV for the next generation - the ones who whilst staying at university had iPhones and dreamt of owning a MacBook Pro for their travels.

As a non conventional TV viewer, the Apple TV was always perfect for me - it's an extension of my MacBook and iPhone that I simply love - my only two gadgets!!!!!! - that I travel 9 months of the year with and run a business from as well as using for photos, videos, vlogs, music production in Logic Pro X and Audacity and 4K 60 fps video creation in Final Cut Pro X. The Apple TV is the perfect compliment to the iPhone, MacBoo and iTunes Store and now, Apple Arcade. Personally, I feel that we'll see a Apple TV Pro offered with A13X chip and storage options of 64GB, 128 and maybe 256GB for the Arcade users.
I don't want it to appeal to the masses - they are not into that - they want cheap Firesticks or 'free' Sky TV boxes with their £50 a month TV subscription of dribble filled with badly produced TV ads! That's the 'masses' market here in the UK for TV. It's old, it's traditional and it's pretty dire as in last century.
Apple doesn't fit into that category. They have their own style and it grabs people by the heart, impulse and passion. Cheap or cheaper really does not fit into that ethos instead offering the ultimate user experience with ease of use and beautiful design is their path. BUT many people are not interested in that - that's why they buy Android, Windows basic stuff etc. You can't please everyone. You've just got to follow your goal and path and that's something that Apple has done incredibly well from day 1 and still does 100% in 2020.

On a side line, I feel that HDMI 2.1 is perfect for the seamless auto frame rate switching which is so essential with internet streaming and its huge variety of frame rates. Maybe people don't need to know about it, but it's essential that we have it!
Critiquing the UK public plus a free biography. Any informing (or should I say: opinion) you intended to bring was clouded by your backslapping aloofness.

If the new Apple TV can approach this level , the next gen of consoles might just have more competition than they thought
But Apple will also have to make it a good platform for games that aren't just desktop/tv versions of mobile games. Maybe we'll see some exclusives...

hey now the A13 is still a vary powerful chip we won't see the A14 in tell the fall line up so just be happy that they did not put a A11 or A12 chip in the SE
I don’t think they were disappointed about the A13 in the SE, I think they were pleasantly surprised and suggesting that seeing Apple’s current top-of-the-line chip in their current bottom-of-the-line phones means we’re more likely to see an A14 in the new Apple TV hardware. I agree.

Probably either because the AppleTV version wasn’t selling enough or because the current hardware doesn’t have enough power. The A10X is great but 4K upto 60p (not to mention HDR) is a *lot*. That’s 33% more pixels than 12.9 iPad Pro for example.

Almost tempted to pull the trigger on a 4K refurb on the Canada store - 64GB is $40 off at $209 Canadian. Cheapest I've ever seen it on the store.

It seems like a lot of developers are dropping tvOS support on many apps that I use. They either stopped updating the apps and still update the iOS version or just pulled them from the tvOS App Store. I have quite a few apps on my ATV that now unusable.

At least when it comes to Apple Arcade, suspect this has more to do with being a cheap subscription that the capabilities of the tvOS HW.

The rumors leading up the the ATV4 launch was that it was going to have Xbox 360 quality games, but Apple set the tone for gaming on the ATV with the CrossyRoads demo.

tvOS could have been really good for gaming, but Apple nerfed it from the start. Even though Apple lifted some of the restrictions (Siri Remote, 200MB static storage), I think it killed most of the gaming momentum leading up to the tvOS launch.

It basically turned the ATV into a nice, but expensive streaming box, when it could have been so much more.

I agree , it has so much potential. TvOS could’ve been a ‘game’ changer but looks like they blew it.

Maybe one day ... who knows ... Apple are usually late to the table then eventually clear up...

I don't even have a 4K TV but am waiting for this so I can have an ATV in both locations I use one without having to carry it back and forth between the rooms! If I'm going to spend the money I want the latest and greatest for when I to decide to upgrade one of my TVs.

Jon Prosser tweeted the A12X Apple TV 4K (64/128 GB) is good to go anytime now.

That sounds a lot better than the rumored A12.

The larger storage size would be nice for some, but I think 64GB would be more than adequate for the masses, at least for what tvOS currently offers.

Maybe the 128GB sized storage is a sign that Apple may have some incentives for developers to release some decent games/ports on the ATV.

Probably not though.

Just as the TV app manages Apple TV Channels, Apple Arcade games should be managed by the Arcade app.

That is, Arcade app should be a container for all Apple Arcade games (as to not clutter Apple TV Home screen) while managing storage via Offload Unused Apps.

It does seem like it's time for an Apple TV Pro

Why you ask?
To charge more money of course.

Apple TV Pro + Two Home Pod Pro's for sound - $1299-1499 all in.
Because - why not?

My Apple-TV-HD is fine, but I would buy a new Apple-TV Pro if under $350 (especially if it did more on the gaming-side).

No thanks on the Home-Pods . We have a real home theater sound system (Onkyo AVR, Polk speakers, etc). We use Harmony remote/hub. Alexa Echos and/or Shows in all main rooms.
