The redesigned remote is 90% of the reason people are buying this thing. Apple appreciated this as they already sell the 2nd gen remote as a standalone. After all these years, and knowing the main desire to upgrade, why is the design still awkward?
Yes, it's pretty clear their hearts were not really into it and they are still attached to the minimalistic design.
The new remote is certainly an improvement over the old one but I would have apprreciated something even heftier and with more buttons. In particular, I would have really liked a home screen button which just works in one click as opposed to a combination. Same for fast forward. I would also really like a dedicated button for PIP. It just gets in the way too much as it's currently implemented.

I miss being able to jump forward/back 10 seconds at a time by clicking on the right/left edge of the old remote. With the new remote, the video pauses and waits for me to scrub... scrubbing is less precise and requires more of my focus.
Yeah, I never quite got all the hate for the old one. I mean, it's definitely tricky to pick up and handle without accidental input, but I feel like they could've addressed that without ditching the touch pad altogether -- like maybe if they'd recessed it a bit or put some raised "guardrails" around the edges.

After years of frustration with the Apple TV remote, I gave up and ordered the Function 101 remote for Apple TV. It eliminates every usage problem that Apple has never resolved with their undersized complex remotes. I suggest users consider the Function 101. I will never go back to Apple's remote. Ther Function doesn't have Siri, but the other features more than offset Siri, which I seldon use with Apple TV. function101.com

With the new Apple TV 4K now in customers' hands, some users are reporting issues when trying to control video with the redesigned Siri Remote.

Specifically, some users are complaining that using the circular gesture on the new clickpad ring to fast-forward or rewind paused video isn't working as expected. Rather than scrubbing through video continually in the direction of the gesture, the video scrubs back and forth in opposite directions.

From what we've been able to work out, the problem seems to relate to a subtle additional gesture that users are missing out, either because it isn't very intuitive or Apple doesn't demonstrate it particularly well in the marketing material.

Try following these steps to get it working. We've italicized the crucial gesture that users appear to be omitting.
  1. First, pause the video by pressing the Play/Pause button, or by pressing the center of the clickpad ring. (A small preview thumbnail will appear above the playback timeline at the bottom of the screen.)
  2. Swipe left or right across the clickpad to scrub backward or forward in time. For more granular control, rest your finger on the outer edge of the clickpad ring until a ring icon appears on-screen, then trace a circle with your finger around the clickpad ring in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction.
  3. To begin playback at the new position, press the center of the clickpad.
You should find this method works with Apple's own apps, but we've found inconsistencies in its functioning with third-party apps, especially those that don't use Apple's native playback UI. For instance, it worked for us in Netflix, but the Disney+ app had persistent issues responding to the circular gesture.

It could be that some third-party apps need updating before they recognize the new clickpad ring on the second-generation Siri Remote, so hopefully any niggles will be smoothed out soon.

Huh. Works fine for me. Reminds me of the big scrub wheel on my old Sony hifi VCR. You scrubbed by half turning it one way or the other, adjusting speed by how far you turned it, from a couple frames a second to full minutes at a time. I guess if people went into it thinking it was more like a click wheel on the iPod then they were probably confused.

One of the stranger things they swapped were the buttons.

They are all clicky, loud and cheap feeling/sounding now -- no matter how softly you press them.

Awful. Completely at odds with the premium pricing.

It took me an evening to figure out you needed to pause for a split-second with your thumb on the scroll ring before you could use the jog feature.

It certainly didn’t help that Disney+ has inconsistent behaviour and is a hot mess of bugs and partial interface crashes.

Honestly… Third day into all new Apple TV’s in the house. I miss the old remote. The old gesture section was more like an extension of the iPhone and felt natural. This new one is large, clunky, button driven, I don’t know… Feels like it went back in time so far.

Question - can it pair with multiple ATVs? I'd like one remote I can use around the house.

Never mind - just found out it's IR only so useless for me.

Incredible how much UX goes into a seemingly 'simple' remote, it's not just up/down/left/right navigation.

You should be able to click left or right on the clickpad ring.

Skip forward or backward 10 seconds.
During playback, press right or left on the clickpad ring. Press again to skip another 10 seconds.

From Everything you can do with the new Clickpad.

It's software support enabled and it seems as though it's not working right in all apps at this time.

How would that work, considering it is RF? I suppose if it had device 1,2,3 buttons on it to switch ATV's but otherwise, you might wind up controlling 3 ATV's that are in range at the same time!

Not awkward at all. Started using it with no issues as soon as I picked it up. It’s super intuitive for me.

YouTube App currently does not work with the new circular clickpad gesture.

Surprise, surprise. I wish Google would stop thinking they know best when it comes to video playback and just use the native player. It’s pretty horrible UI practice to have a different control interface to most other apps on the OS and their video player is missing key controls like being able to adjust the volume. If they used the native player all the controls would be in their familiar places and things like the new Apple TV remote would be supported.
