They have always had the remote available as a separate purchaseThe redesigned remote is 90% of the reason people are buying this thing. Apple appreciated this as they already sell the 2nd gen remote as a standalone. After all these years, and knowing the main desire to upgrade, why is the design still awkward?
It's Bluetooth, and similar to a phone could pair with only one device in range. Ideally, you could pair it with multiple ATVs, and have no issues unless they were all within the BT range; or put on a popup much like the iPhone App does to select what device to control. If it's only paired with one device it could skip the popup. How would that work, considering it is RF? I suppose if it had device 1,2,3 buttons on it to switch ATV's but otherwise, you might wind up controlling 3 ATV's that are in range at the same time!

It’s actually the 4th Apple TV remote3rd generation? Oh, never mind. It is the 2nd generation Siri Remote, 3rd generation ATV remote.
That first generation remote was a slippery devil, and with the tapered sides, they could slip into so many thin areas...
It seems apple’s software quality has taken a downward spiral I recent years honestlyStrange that you need to rest you finger first. I have coded something similar a while ago, and it is fairly easy to track if someone is doing a circular motion. Especially since the gesture can be only used for scrubbing in videos.
Also, they should have found out during user testing that people are not able to understand this gesture without a mini tutorial. UX team was too confident on this one.
Location awareness would solve it. The current remote certainly is big enough to add a little location aware features to it - so when you’re near one TV it controls that unit and when near another it controls the other. How would that work, considering it is RF? I suppose if it had device 1,2,3 buttons on it to switch ATV's but otherwise, you might wind up controlling 3 ATV's that are in range at the same time!
Hated the old remote. I love the look and feel of the new remote. I absolutely cannot understand why you think it's ugly.Ugliest remote ever

Then you are doing something wrong. It works in Netflix, HBOMax, Apple TV+, etc. Once you realize you need to pause the program first, the scrubbing is easy to use and quite excellent.Hulu is the only streaming app I’ve found that uses the ‘wheel’ function so far, it doesnt work in Netflix, YoutubeTV, appletv+ apps. When working, it’s great but aggravating in unsupported apps right now.
Actually. It does! You can click the center button and use the left/right click to rewind/advance or….YouTube App currently does not work with the new circular clickpad gesture.
Hulu: “Hold my beer”Big surprise there. Easily the worst app I've ever used on Apple TV.
Damn, this is quite the interesting take and something I was fearing but hadn’t put into words until your comment, buttons driven is the key phrase here for me.Honestly… Third day into all new Apple TV’s in the house. I miss the old remote. The old gesture section was more like an extension of the iPhone and felt natural. This new one is large, clunky, button driven, I don’t know… Feels like it went back in time so far.
Seriously what are these comments. This is Apples best remote by FAR. The touch controls are even better to use than the 2016 remote just for the fact alone that its design prevents accidental inputs. The buttons are there for people who prefer that input, but they also make it easier to use the 10-second skips during play. It’s also harder to lose because of its bright aluminum finish and added bulk (2016’s remote was a flat and fragile thing that was begging to slip under a cushion, and camouflaged with everything making it harder to spot). I agree the extra second to rest your finger for jog controls isn’t 100% intuitive but you get used to it quickly, and it works great when it does. Third party apps need to update to utilize it properly. They made this remote for the TV App first and is another reason why it’s better to use than another streaming box.
and everyone knows how to use the iPod click wheel. Jesus, how did they **** this up? I have 75,000 photos going back to 1998. any ideas how I quickly get to 2004? given there's not slide gesture down the right hand side now?I thought the scrub gesture would’ve been just like when using an iPod click wheel. That was my intuition when playing with the remote anyway.
The old remote feels more natural for gesture controls. The main annoyance I had with it was the skipping tracks or whatever using the edge of the remote; sometimes it just paused whatever was on the screen. I think it was a little too small & not thick enough too.
Seriously what are these comments. This is Apples best remote by FAR.
Yeah don’t listen to that poster. I’ve been using the new remote since Friday and this thing is an absolute JOY compared to the previous version. You can still treat the wheel like a touch pad, navigating the same as the previous, but the new form factor makes motions so much more precise. You can still scrub the old way by clicking the center to pause and then swiping left or right to rewind or fast forward respectively, but now you can also rotate your thumb over the wheel counter clockwise and clockwise to get the same result. The thicker body makes the entire remote so much easier to hold and the button placement feels natural other than I keep pressing mute when I mean to press play because of the way they shuffled the order around. I’m sure I’ll get used to it in another couple of days.Damn, this is quite the interesting take and something I was fearing but hadn’t put into words until your comment, buttons driven is the key phrase here for me.
For all it touch quirks and extreme vertical symmetry, the second gen remote did behave just like iOS, I would suddenly find myself double pressing home button to see the open apps, swipe up to close them, long press home for sleeping/outputs, so on and so forth without ever checking a manual. So I think it did work and just needed further tweaking and enhancement of the what was there half working?
I guess the new gen has its benefits, wouldn’t know yet, but I would expect it to behave just like an iPod classic but according to this article it isn’t so?
To prevent accidental scrubbing I assume, since unlike those remotes this one is touch based, not mechanical. Seriously it’s not an issue.Seems to me they could’ve bought an old Sony VCR or LD Player off eBay to learn how a jog wheel operates. And like why do you even have to pause the video manually??
