Nope. I was in the Showtime Anytime app and asked to play Homeland. It brought up a menu of Homeland episodes. It will only play episodes purchase from iTunes or using the Showtime app. There are two Showtime apps: one that costs $10/mo and one you get access to if you're already paying for it through your cable provider. Similar to HBO Now and HBO Go (same issue exists with HBO). Seems nonsensical to not play a show from an app you're in. It's a quibble as I can just press the episode but it would be nice to be able to launch Apple TV and say "play Homeland on Showtime" and it "just works".

I remember when "it just works" meant something.

I remember that the 1st iOS only had built-in apps or web apps. No 3rd party apps! It got better with iOS 2. And the 1st watchOS didn't even have native apps available from Apple 3rd party developers. It got better with watchOS 2

Yes, it will get better though with some updates. The platform is there..

SEARCH really seems to be wonky. Here is a great example trying to find a title. Look at the search query and then look RIGHT above it on my main screen in my library.

And also, be cautious when searching WITHIN the itunes store, or searching for an actor it will take you TO the itunes store first.

You can see I was searching for an actress. It takes me to the itunes store and shows me it's available to purchase for 12.99$..

But, if I search for the movie from the MAIN search, it shows me that this movie is indeed available on NETFLIX (subscription is enabled) and I could just watch it for FREE from there.

But, if you get into the itunes store, it's NOT going to show your other sources where you might find the content. HULU, HBO, SHOWTIME, NETFLIX, etc..

Sneaky, or just not good integration of the database into all UI? Not sure

I will say that the speed is great and multitasking is nice. Played a game while I had a Netflix movie paused and went back to it in a millisecond when I was done.

This thread is another example of why, for the first time in a long line of Apple purchases, I have begun waiting before pre-ordering Apple products. It started with the watch for me. Never thought I would wait to see how a product was before ordering it but that is where Apple has taken me.

TV interfaces are inherently clunky and interaction difficult based on your distance from the screen. We need a revolutionary way of interacting with our TV and this device certainly is not that. It is a nice incremental upgrade but nothing that knocks your socks off.

Im trying to understand why this things needs to be SO BIG AND HEAVY? What happened to the old form factor (or a better one for that matter) and the pace of technology change? After nearly four years of the older form factor did we really need to double the size and nearly double the weight to get only these seemingly incremental gains that were achieved?

It has a massively more powerful CPU and GPU. I suppose you could call it incremental but the huge increase in processing power to support apps and games requires a physically bigger heat sink.

Lets be honest though, its not just this product, the AW, the bugs in OS X, the problems with iOS...
Apple have lost sight of what they "were" in their greed for more sales and profit..
How do you figure that? Buggy products certainly aren't going to increase sales...

Why does it matter how heavy it is? It's like you're carrying it around with you.

Exact same feel here. I think I just paid $149 to be a beta tester. (Luckily) I didn't get the 64GB one.

I actually DO take it with travelling to hotels or foreign countries, so at some point weight is an issue.

but to the above point. While it's MASSIVELY more powerful and certainly HAS a GPU, we're 2.5 generations of moores law into this development, I'm surprised it really has to be THAT massively powerful and produce that much heat..

I'd like to see how it compares to say an iphone 6s for speed and performance to see how/why it had to be that big.

Indeed simply HAVING to HAVE a heat sink is going to add weight/size/heft.. and keeping it cheap

Read your post again. You are upset that you might actually wait to see a product before buying it!?!?! Is there any other company's products that you just buy without reviews or seeing it in person? Waiting for a product to be available in a store and then looking at it there is a very normal process.

Apple makes good stuff. But really you shouldn't just blindly buy their stuff.

Also in this day and age why am I still using the remote to input user names and passwords? Can we use the keyboard on a laptop or phone? Or speak it through the mic? Totally ridiculous.

This I agree with.
Wouldn't be amazing if Apple had a remote app.

I'm afraid that I agree - They still seem to be good at iPhones and Macs - but everything else is really not good (Watch, Apple Music, Apple TV etc.) They just can't seem to get this stuff right...

good at macs? I don't think so. The new macbook is terrible, one port that can't do anything without a dongle except charge. The new iMacs are expensive and still use a 5400rpm spinning disc instead of an SSD standard. The macbook air is awesome but could be so much better if they reduced the bezel on the display and increased the resolution or at least put in an IPS display, Apple usually makes the displays good even if the resolution is low but that doesn't apply to the air. The retina macbook pro I have no issue with but the rest of their line has severe issues

In defense of the weight: it doesn't get dragged all over by HDMI cables. The Roku 3 I have is too light and is easily dragged around by cables. I much prefer electronics to have some weight to them when they are this size.

If you have both showtime apps it prioritizes showtime, but if you delete showtime , then showtime anytime works great with Siri!

I have both HBO Go and Showtime Anytime and Siri works on both of them. I don't have the HBO Now and Showtime apps installed.

Personally, I wouldn't recommend it at this point unless someone was tied into iTunes and Apple Music. It will be easier to recommend in a few months if they update the Remote app, add Siri to Apple Music, bring back the podcast app, and get Plex.

I am still going to keep mine around and just use AirPlay for some of the missing features until Apple gets caught up. But I can understand why people are saying that it feels like a beta version.

Apple's products almost never have instant universal appeal. They play the long game because they know that people are usually resistant to big change. So they make incremental changes, and keeping focus on just a few important things. Their approach frustrates a lot of people who want it all. *right now*. And it damn well better work flawlessly, or else...

I thought that applied to Microsoft. Release 1.0, improve 2.0 and 3.0 is finally usuable. So far from Apple my impression is that the execution is usually good, the product is spot on.

For ATV4 I get the impression they let a bunch of interns work on this for 3 years. As mentioned in another posting lot of things are missing:

  • Folders for applications as missing.
  • What about iMessage or notifications ? I don't want to type e-mail with a remote (would be a kind of a SM excercise for Apple geeks), but notifications would be nice.
  • Appstore categories. What the hell happened here.
  • iCloud backup.
  • Play personal content from iCloud drive
  • Remote app.
  • Authenticate appstore/iTunes purchases via TouchID on iOS device
  • Multi-user, specially for kids
  • Bluetooth keyboards (but I think it's a real choice, guess voice control is the future for Apple)
  • Multi-tasking ? E.g. watching Youtube movie while playing game
