Apple today updated its Apple TV Remote app, which doesn't receive new features very often. According to Apple's release notes, there's nothing major that's included in the update, but it does feature a new app icon.

The prior icon was an Apple logo next to the word "TV," the branding that Apple uses for its Apple TV set-top boxes. The new logo resembles the Apple TV Remote, making it clearer what its function is.

Today's revamped logo matches the updated logo for the Apple TV Remote option in the Control Center on iOS devices. Apple also changed that icon from the Apple TV branding to a remote control design in the iOS 12.2 update.

iOS 12.2 brought other changes to the Remote option on the iPhone and iPad as well, introducing a design that is darker, more streamlined, and takes up the majority of the iPhone's interface. With a full Apple TV Remote available in Control Center on modern devices, there's little reason to download the standalone Apple TV Remote app.

Apple is, however, still keeping it around, and according to today's release notes, version 2.2 brings "general performance and stability improvements" along with the new app icon.

The Apple TV Remote app can be downloaded from the App Store for free. [Direct Link]

How does one use this new app? Can’t find my real remote, so I use my phone. But since the upgrade my remote app is useless. Doesn’t sense swipes. Other buttons like mic and play/pause just triple tap like there’s an error. Any ideas what’s going on? What am I doing wrong?

What I find most disheartening about this is that they seem to be this committed to the worst remote ever conceived. Enough so to change the icon to reflect it in all it's failure as a remote. Signaling IF there is a new ATV released soon, it'll still have this abomination as a remote. Sad.

I still use my aluminum ones with the arrow-wheel. So much better.. and it wasn't great, lol.

This is the problem with flat design. It is clearly limited to the point where you can end up getting crap like this. When you could imagine doing this yourself in under 2 minutes in Microsoft paint using the most basic shapes.. it doesn’t exactly scream quality.

No he isn’t. Every icon there actually look like thought was put into it compared to this remote app

And the above icon isn’t? I know we all have different tastes and all but I’m really glad I don’t have yours.
I’m not a fan of useless visual fluff to make digital things look “real” not saying the remote icon is good. The previous one was fine and superior.

So, this new app works fine controlling my AV system. But since the 12.2 update yesterday, the Control Center Remote won’t adjust volume or scrub video forward or backward. The App does these just fine... but the Control Center widget doesn’t.
Any suggestions?
