I don't get at all, why Apple would go from a great black stylised icon..that was perfect for an OLED screen, to more white??..it sticks out like an ugly sore thumb.
The remote app on the watch allows you to use it as a remote for the Apple TV and control the Apple TV. Nothing to do with iTunes. It's a built in app.Wrong! That is the iTunes Remote app. This app is different. This app has Siri that can play content on the ATV, and control the volume.
Since Apple TV (the app) will be everywhere, the box only makes sense for older TVs that don’t have AirPlay and don’t have the app.
The app is literally called iTunes Remote. Search for it in the App Store. The remote app on the watch allows you to use it as a remote for the Apple TV and control the Apple TV. Nothing to do with iTunes. It's a built in app.

There is a ton of stuff you can only do with an AppleTV box that can't be done with just the TV App. Literally it will only allow you to access that one app and let you airplay things from other devices. Nothing else will work.
It sounds like you are the one who doesn't understand friend. The remote app for Apple watch I'm speaking of is one of the default apps on Apple Watch and cannot be uninstalled. It is there even if you do not have the iTunes remote app or the Apple TV remote app on your phone. It is not attached to either of those apps. It allows you to control not only the 4th gen Apple TV (HD & 4K) but even 2nd and 3rd gen Apple TVs as well. It works via being signed into Homesharing with your AppleID on the AppleTV. I use it all the time on my AppleTV 4K and 3rd gen Apple TV.The app is literally called iTunes Remote. Search for it in the App Store.
Apple TV Remote is a totally different app. Those who don’t have a fourth or fifth gen ATV don’t understand the difference.
Again...going back to my original statement...the ATV Remote app has Siri. It also controls the volume. It sounds like you are the one who doesn't understand friend.
