Apple today announced that it has renewed the critically acclaimed workplace thriller "Severance" for a second season. The announcement comes just a few days ahead of the season one finale, which will be released this Friday, April 8 on Apple TV+.

The sci-fi series, created by Dan Erickson and executive produced by Ben Stiller, revolves around a mysterious company named Lumon Industries, whose employees cannot recall any memories about their personal lives while they are at work. Likewise, once the employees leave the office, they cannot remember anything about the workplace.

Apple TV+ does not release viewing figures, but "Severance" appears to have become one of Apple's more popular series since it premiered in February. The series stars Adam Scott, Patricia Arquette, Christopher Walken, and others.

"Thanks to creator Dan Erickson, the brilliant Ben Stiller, and an incomparable cast and crew, 'Severance' has imagined an existence that's equal parts riveting and enthralling as viewers around the globe can't get enough of these rich characters," said Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+. "We're excited to go deeper into this wholly unique world and unpack more layers of Lumon in season two."

"It's really exciting to see the response from people who are loving the show — and the level of fan engagement," said Stiller. "It has been a long road bringing 'Severance' to television. I first read Dan's pilot over five years ago. It has always been a multi-season story, and I'm really happy we get to continue it. I'm grateful to our partners at Apple TV+ who have been behind it the whole way. Praise Keir!"

My birth name is Keir and this show freaks me out (although it's an amazing show).

This is the SECOND Apple TV show that has used the name Keir. It was also used in Foundation for the name of one of the children.

Huh? I thought this initially had a 2 season order anyway.

I am watching it but I don’t get anything yet I am intrigued I mostly just watch it for the „aha duh!“ moment, which as of now, still has to happen ?

What does the name mean?

Nothing much. It means dark or swarthy in Scottish Gaelic. But it's also the name of a place near Dumfries. Curiously, Severance spells it "Kier", and I wonder if this is deliberate (just like Lumon is a misspelled version of Lumen).

Most people with the name Keir in the UK got it from Keir Hardy, a early 20th century politician. He took it from his mother's maiden name.

Ditto to the kudos for Severance. No need to repeat them all.

I will say I think the premise of Severance is interesting given Apple is producing it. The cult of Kier Eagan isn't a million miles from the "Steve Jobs reality distortion field" and it somehow feels self referential.

Severance piqued my interest in AppleTV+ and is what made me start using it. Ted Lasso cemented the deal. Apple got an Apple One subscriber because of the cascade Severance caused in our house. And now we're gearing up to start Pachinko. This is most concurrent TV than we've watched in our house at any time I can remember (we don't watch much).

AppleTV+, for my money, has the highest quality content for streaming right now. May not stay that was but it was enough for me to engage and cancel Netflix, which feels like the Dollar Tree of streaming right now.

Kudos and well done.

This show is at a weird crossroads with its finale: if they reveal a bunch of secrets they have been alluding to, they risk losing audience intrigue; if they reveal too little, they risk losing audience attention. Strange it got picked up before the release of the finale…

That’s actually pretty interesting. Lumon’s leader is darkness and the company is light. Maybe the misspelling is sort of a distraction or to mean the company isn’t darkness to light it’s all darkness. I dunno. Seems cool.

This show is at a weird crossroads with its finale:

I thought this too. But then I remembered that the woman with the baby had been severed. In other words, it's not just about the workers. It's about some individuals outside of Lumon creating a kind of Stepford Wives scenario. Tired of your wife? She doesn't want a baby? Just turn her off and use her innie, who's blissfully unaware of anything.

And they still have yet to cover the mystery of what the innies do inside of Lumen all day, which I don't think they'll get around to until well into the second season. It's pretty clear that everything the innies see is literally a metaphor to hide the full horror of what's happening. That's why Helly was so taken aback initially doing her work. She sees numbers and letters, but what she's actually seeing on that screen is likely to be horrific.
