I never expected the new iPods to ship or be available immediately because the back to school promo runs until Sept 7, and they won't make the new iPods part of that program. I bet they won't be available any sooner than that following Thursday or Friday.

This argument turns up a lot, but the back-to-school promos run at different times in different parts of the world. Apple is always bound to be out of luck somewhere as far as timing their releases. That doesn't mean it's necessarily incorrect this time, but if Apple really cared about it they wouldn't be able to release any products between January and September.

I am glad they are sticking with the AppleTV name, it sounds better then iTV in my opinion.

As much as I want one to be geeked out and play 1080p and mkvs I don't think that's what we will see today.

Hopefully I am wrong!

Apple isn't going to bother with 1080p anytime soon. They have enough problems getting content owners to permit sales of 'iTunes HD' content in the store that is 720p.

It only needs to be 1080p output capable and capable of running user apps. After that, Air Video and Plex take care of you and if not, someone WILL develop an app that does. I really hope it does have app capabilities though, I'm really looking forward to some board games and other games to be played with external apple based devices. Scrabble on 52 inches while playing streamed itunes music in the background through the entertainment center would be sweet.

I woke up at 9:45AM this morning, got to the computer and openened up macrumors getting set to watch the event. Then of course I saw that the time for the event was 10:00AM PDT, not 10:00AM EDT. This is the second time I have done this. I guess I really ought to pay more attention to the region of country that the event is coming from. Oh well. :)

I've already been waiting since the last touch for this one. If they delay the date to stores by weeks I'm going to go insane.

You'll be waiting at least until the Back to School promotion is over on Sept. 7. They aren't going to give away new product- they use the promo as a way to clear out old inventory before the new stuff is introduced.

If it runs apps, there is a legitimate case for 1080p content outside of their movie catalog. Prior to iOS and the appstore being on everything they put out your argument held water, particularly with the last iteration of the AppleTV. That is no longer the case.

True, but in the U.S. at least, the back to school promo sure seems like an easy way to clear out old inventory. Plus I don't see Apple giving away brand new Touches and Nanos for the next week.

If Apple is relaunching AppleTV today it makes sense to let some iPad-ish hype build up before releasing it, especially since gift buying season is still two months out. However, before that happens Jobs MUST make the case why consumer need another box next to their TV. Until that case is made these boxes are always going to be "a hobby." .99 TV rentals don't do it. And a Wii, PS3, and XBOX all have Netflix streaming capability.

They certainly never have in the past. When a new model is introduced before the promo ends Apple updates the offer to include only the previous generation models. Anyone who things they are getting the new model is deluding themselves.

The BAck to School promotions generally have fine print limiting the deal ti certain model #'s.

Six days I can live with, 3-4 weeks would be too much. Got Best Buy certificates to spend and they usually get them 5 days later then Apple does.

If memory serves they have come out with new iPods while the Back to School program was still going on but the new versions were not eligible for the program. It really is not complicated to make some p/n's not eligible.

It is still the case until Apple announces it runs apps, and confirms any of the apps permitted to run will benefit from 1080p support. :)

It will have Netflix. It will not run iOS. It will not run apps.

Is this backed by any source, or just speculation? Because I have a hard time believing that Apple will allow Netflix in, which would easily cannibalize iTunes sales, without also having the option to purchase apps to replace that lost income.

And I'm really hoping that current AppleTV's will be able to run whatever they come out with. I have 2 AppleTV's in my house, and I'd be pretty upset if they didn't offer the same functionality.

Upgrade path for current AppleTV owners?

I just hope that if they do update the Apple TV line, they make it possible for current owners of Apple TV's to upgrade their devices' OS. I have two of them, I hate the latest software update. The interface is jittery, and most of all, the downloads are slow! So slow, that family now hates the Apple TV 'cause it never makes the complete download of a movie, so it stops playing the movie until it can muster enough energy to continue the download. I have examined my network thinking it's a networking issue, but it's not. The Apple TV never did this until I upgraded to the latest OS version. I also find the movie selection to be limited. I was even thinking about getting a Samsung Blueray DVD player and interfacing with NetFlix and calling it quits with the Apple TV, but I like streaming photo's and music to the house via the device.

Speculation. But everything else has Netflix, if AppleTV didn't it would be left out. They won't support iOS because that would be yet ANOTHER target for development... you can't take touch screen apps and shove them on a TV. Won't work.

As far as the Apple TV, they probably couldn't get the rights to the iTV name, if they even wanted it. And I didn't have any expectations of when it'd be available, I'm guessing by the end of the month.

Nice theory, but the Back To School promo is only applicable for the iPod touch 8GB (second generation).
