Early reviews
Morning show
- Too bland, drama feels forced
See - Not enough going on
Dickinson - Too revisionist, not funny
For all Mankind- Interesting but slow, packed with gender politics

not really surprising. I’ve watched every trailer looking for something that feels marginally compelling, getting little more than “meh” for me.

Also kind of weird that so many of their flagship shows have such a strong political slant. Does that bring in viewership?

that’s not what the reviewers said. You only read one or two of the sites, clearly. Dickinson has gotten good reviews from female reviewers so far. For all Mankind does not have “too much gender politics” rather, the gender discussion is considered a high point of the show!

How important are these reviews when the first 12-months will be free for most users?

It takes a while to build a content business. It wasn’t all that long ago when everyone bitched about Netflix taking away DVD’s and pushing crappy streaming content. Now look at it.

This is just Apple TV+ 1.0. They have billions allocated to making this business work and will eventually find their Game of Thrones and their House of Cards.

Not great, but not really surprising is it? TV isn't easy and lots of shows & stations have had very rocky starts, so I kind of expected reviews for the first batch to be like this.

What political slant?

Making good TV and movies is hard. No one has figured out how to do it consistently. Every TV channel, cable channel, movie studio, streaming service etc has good and bad. Marvel is probably on the best streak in history but even they had duds.

The tech giants have crazy amounts of money to jump into this arena but their skill set doesn’t translate. So Apple will have some bad and hopefully eventually have some good. We will see.

Really? Hence the surprising sex and violence in See?
Yeah - for anyone who bothered to read the reviews, one thing was clearly debunked. The Apple family friendly rumor is total garbage.
The quality of some of the shows might not be there just yet, but Apple certainly isn’t pulling any punches in the gore/sex columns.

For All Mankind is the show I would mostly like to see and I am happy it seems to be alright.

Anyway I didn't expect any show to hit stellar reviews. Apple usually launches something and roll with it building upon strengths and improving shortfalls.

It will take a few months or more to see where all this is going.

Apple still has yet to say exactly how the free year for this will work. Is it just automatic if you bought a device in that timeframe, and somehow their system will just know? Is there a site to register for it? Is it just a year if you bought any of the devices, or do you get an additional year if you bought multiple Apple devices after September?

But I thought if you spend a lot you get quality. What happened? Great storytelling isn’t supposed to be this boring is the general consensus.

Or can we all just conclude that these shows aren’t much different than any of the dozens that come out (And you glaze over trying to find something interesting to watch) on Netflix? If these were on Netflix the crowd would be pointing fingers and saying what trash it is. Quantity over quality. There’s no Apple magic here. No software/hardware integration stuff. Just Apple showing why they shouldn’t be doing this.

Doesn’t bode well for Apple that they don’t seem to have a hit anywhere in this tepid mix. I wonder what their strategy is for quietly letting this service die.
Probably too early to conclude anything.

My logic makes perfect sense - Apple are launching their TV show with a handful of shows with poor to average reviews. People won’t pay for it so the bulk of subscribers will be getting it for free with Apple devices.

Disney + has the most incredible back catalogue. Yes, Verizon are giving it away but it will have more paid subscribers vs free ones.
Your logic is just an extrapolation from the very early stages. Predictions of Apple failure generally age poorly. That's empirical. Apple can buy content if the original content languishes, but let's give it a chance. At least a year or two. If it all goes to hell, Apple can literally do anything they want to bolster the content. They could buy Disney if they really wanted it.

Disney does have by far the best content library on the planet.

Disney+ with Verizon is only for a year, then you have to pay outside of your subscription. You get just one year only with Verizon. It was no different than them paying for 3 months and piggybacking off of the original Apple Music 3 month trial. Typical Verizon carrot dangling, a decaying network with no future and overpriced like their main competitor AT&T.

T-Mobile continues to include Netflix in their plans. Yes, you have to pay $2 extra, but it’s still cheaper than paying for it outside of it. T-Mobile gives better value to their customers to make up for their signal struggles. The price increase was due to Netflix, so you had the option to change plans without it as well.

As for Apple TV+, you have to assume for every original Netflix show or movie that’s good, there are a handful of terrible to mediocre at best. I’m not surprised at some of these reviews, but at the state of movies and TV these days, it’s all hit and miss. I’ll still check it out, but it’ll have to wait. Disney+ will be no different than Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime, once the newness wears off.

Wasn't really satisfied myself with Disney+'s offer (mostly old movies, we already have Netflix for that). Think the thing with these services is I'd rather wait for enough content to pay for them.

I don't like to read reviews about TV Shows or Movies; I like to create my own opinion. I'm looking forward to watch For All Mankind, and I will watch The Morning Show because I like the cast. If I have time I will watch the other shows.

Wow, from the blurbs in MacRumors, these don't seem very good.

I was planning on checking them out, and I guess I still will, but.......

What the Hell are they even doing in streaming video? Why?

Know your lane, Timmy. It ain't Apple TV+ and it ain't News+.

Ouch.

But kinda predictable, to be honest. They just got a bunch of big name actors and threw money at them. I mean, I was literally laughing my ass off when they revealed the trailer for See - it was a ridiculous concept that didn't like a plausibly interesting story. They're trying too hard.

It's sad to see (huh) what Apple has become these days.

"The Mandalorian" is a must see for a lot of Disney+ users. No must see show in Apple's lineup now (or in the near future). Wait until those exclusive Marvel shows come to Disney+…

With only 3 episodes available to critics I think I’ll ignore the reviews and make up my own mind. Roll on Friday!
That's not an atypical amount of episodes to be provided early on. It's a fair amount to give someone an idea what kind of show it will be, at least of the season in question.

Which isn't to say you should make up your own mind, but it shouldn't invalidate the critic's viewpoints either.

You get that these shows, had Apple not bid on them, would have landed at other steamers right? That they weren't developed, soup-to-nuts in Cupertino? Let's slow our roll a little, please.

Yes, very sad to be a $1T company with the peanut gallery calling for failure before the service has even launched.

Your view isn't confirmed from a couple preliminary reviews. Maybe the show will suck, but will be very popular...tons of shows that fall into that category.

Think of this as a pilot for Apple. If it doesn't work, they'll fix it or buy the content they need with their unlimited cash.
