when will we be able to subscribe to the WatchESPN, HBOgo and Disney channels with out a cable subscription.

Why doesn't apple get in to the cable market with the existing Apple TV. I don't want a TV set by apple but just content. This will be the next big game changer like the itunes store was for music.

Too much proprietary corporate bs, that's why.

I bought an ATV3 because it supported enabling subs for Netflix content, which I need, and for streaming from my iMac. Hulu+ doesn't have subs for 90% of its content, but $8/month for what i get is better than my cable subscription.

It's possible to rent a film from Apple (or Amazon) long before it's available on Netflix. This is deliberate. I can't see Apple doing with TV what it did with iTunes/Mp3. It was able to corner a new market with iTunes, but breaking an old foundation will be harder.

----------

I never saw Apple TV as a "front and center" Apple product. I mean, it's black plastic, an accessory hardware for those with Macs and HDTVs.

If Apple hopes to move into a new direction with TV, the ATV will be a bridge product that showcases its software and content availability. Maybe Apple isn't committing itself to new ATV for other reasons. :)

Doubt it will come today. Most likely in October with iPad/Media announcement.

Why? They released iOS 7 for the iPad. And there have been plenty of Apple TV iOS 7 betas. Most likely it will come today when Apple pushes the full package and not just the OTA.

....

It's actually kind of ridiculous that they did not release the update today, barring any issues with software. The fact remains they released iTunes Radio to every other connected device they make, sans legacy.

Use Airplay. Angst solved.

How is you AppleTV update? Oh wait, there wasn't one:) I'm telling you, they have redesigned the UI for ATV but we won't see it until Oct. iOS 7 was a lot on their plate for this rollout. The rumors of a co-release where sketchy.

Hurts my head to go from iOS 7 on my iPhone to the Apple TV interface.

I was one of the folk who were concerned about iOS 7 when it was demoed, but now I've used it, I'm starting to quite like it. The Apple TV interface really is horrific and in dire need of a revamp.

No update for Apple TV yet.

According to an apple employee I spoke with: there is no software update for apple tv at this time. No date has been announced.

No Apple employee is going to publicly acknowledge such a thing, or if it exists, unless it comes from an official statement.

So why were they releasing betas for Apple TV the last few months?

Hey the betas don't look anything like iOS 7 , they have the same Interface as the current as the old firmware
They added some new things like iTunes radio & subtitle text size

So developers of iOS devices apps can test out iOS specific Airplay and other APIs/functions. Now we wait until apple decides to push the new UI. Doubt you'll ever see a beta with the new UI as they have tested the back-end already.

Apple TV has never looked like iOS. It is basically just an app that runs on top of the OS.

I don't think you are going to see a new UI anytime soon. The Apple TV update running iTunes Radio is shown on Apple.com and it doesn't look like a new UI to me.
