Just sold my Apple TV 2 this week for $249 on eBay. Idiots will pay a mint for those things since they can be jailbroken. Perfectly happy taking that money and buying a 3.

I did the same!
Ps: I love my AppleTV I use it very often for AirPlay, iTunes Match and some rent at Sunday+pizza!

What I need in ATV

1. A better UI to replace my ATT Uvers POS set-top box. I realize the TV industry is not rolling over and taking it in the posterior like the music industry did, but, geez, someone has to fix this. It is so 1990s.

2. Voice or gesture control. If Samsung can do it, Apple can do it much better. Either Apple has to develop its own or use Kinect or LeapMotion but...something has to been done.

3. Eliminate the need to have iTunes running to link the ATV to my iTunes library. If a media server like EyeConnect can do it, so can Apple. Again, so 1990s.

4. 3rd party software. If you've ever seen ATV jailbroken, then you understand the upside potential here that is untapped. Come on Apple. Stop acting like a totalitarian state!

Perhaps I spoke to soon...

I want to play my games through Apple TV with no lag!

sit next to your Airport Extreme 'ac' and run Cat 6 cable to your AppleTV;-)

I agree, there is no reason Apple cannot at least get something that looks as good as Plex, the UI really shows that they are not putting much effort into this device.

Plex? gag.

Until the get real content, there's no need for much more UI;-)

Logging in and out with password etc. using that little controller is a convoluted mess.

Why can't we just type it on our ipad and iphone and submit via air play?

You can unless I'm misunderstanding? If you're using the remote app, any text input (passwords, searches), can be done with the iOS keyboard.

itunes means i can stream content to my apple tv at home while on vpn to work. can plex and the others do that?

Call me when Apple TV adds:
  • Spotlight Search: I want to search (ideally via Siri) for a movie or TV show from all the "apps", "channels", and iTunes library, just like new Roku. This would require Appel to provide some sort "TV guide" cloud service.
  • App Store: I don't want all these "apps" or "channels" I would never use. Just let me select those that I want.
  • SDK: Open up the SDK to everyone, so I can get apps such as Amazon Instant Video and games.
  • MFi Game Controller.
  • Ability to use Time Capsule as a storage for iTunes library.

Everyone has encountered the frustration of a 'Just One Moment' upgrade taking hours on Apple TV. Especially when you want to watch something NOW. I don't know whether disconnecting Apple TV and connecting to your Mac as a 'device' (as would be the case with an iPhone or iPod Touch) would speed the process along. But I groan every time I sense that Apple TV wants to upgrade itself because I know I might as well do my laundry...twice...in the time it takes to complete the process.

"Everyone" does not include me, at least not with the ATV3. The updates on the old "Take 2" device took forever, but I haven't experienced a longer-than-expected update on the ATV3. Still, as with any updates, if you are in the middle of something, tell the device to not update until you are done.

B) I really hope the iOS 7 mockups shown are not accurate. As far as I'm concirned things like the Apple TV must have a dark theme. Screen burn is a much bigger issue on TV's than small devices, and the iOS7 theme would very quickly damage cheap TV sets if left on for a while.

Yeah, that's a really bad mockup. Didn't seem like an improvement, and quite cluttered.

More important than burn-in, though, is that you never want the UI for a cinema device to be bright because it is then a jarring experience going into and out of movies which tend to be dark.

The UI and color scheme for a phone where most apps are brightly colored will not fly for a TV where most content is dark and the display takes up a large section of the viewer's field of view.

I'm not sure about iTunes Match content that exists only in the cloud. What I do know is that you already can stream via AirPlay any audio/video content -- whether purchased from Apple or not -- that you transfer to your iOS device from iTunes. So, for example, if you rip a movie to an iTunes-compatible format, you can transfer it to your iPhone, then go to your friend's hip yet unassuming apartment and use AirPlay to watch the movie on her AppleTV. The new feature reportedly adds one additional feature that benefits only those who buy the content from Apple. In that case, those people can still use AirPlay to stream the content to someone else's AppleTV, the difference being that they don't ever need to first put the content on their iOS device. Hope that helps clarify.

Oh oh oh oh... gotcha gotcha... Ding that make sense now. I was thinking it was the other way around. Could only play stuff purchased not stuff you have ripped.... so this is saying even stuff you have purchased under your account you can now send it to another device that isn't yours! very nice. Gotcha.

The biggest problem that I have is that many times while I am able to stream the video from something to the AppleTV, the audio doesn't stream with it.

I've hit this airplaying from our Mac Mini over to the AppleTV (Amazon and Hulu-but-not-licensed-for-TV-screens content). There is a command to fix it (at least, works for me all the time):

sudo killall coreaudiod

Then enter your admin password. I think coreaudiod also shows up in Activity Monitor if you want to find it there instead of using Terminal.

Basically, something gets hung up on the AirPlay audio program, and it needs to be force-quit so it can start over and reconnect.

Also, the Netflix App needs to offer the same "Next episode coming up in 10 seconds" feature it has on it's web platform. Hitting menu and select a few times plus the few seconds delay is simply too much for my Breaking Bad addiction.

Yeah, this is missing across the board. Apple needs to think through and evangelize a "continuous play" pattern which Netflix and the others can follow so multi-episode show marathons don't require constantly selecting the next item from the list.

I hope to god one of the things they finally address is the way the ATV handles Seasons. Having separate line entries for each season blows and needs to be fixed

Dear god, yes. This.

UVerse has one of the better UIs out there. What particularly is your issue with it? You want to know bad UI? Cox, TWC, Charter.

I agree.

Rocku's UI sucks and most of the channels are useless.

Are you talking about the interface on the Roku 3? I find it head and shoulders above the Apple TV especially with the integrated search feature. The old interface was definitely lacking but I believe all Roku 2 units and newer are on the modern interface now.

And sure, there are a lot of crap channels just like there are a lot of crap apps on iOS. But it still has almost all of the major providers.

Well to be fair those going for those prices are jail broken and preloaded with all the porn sites... i just watched a couple of plain jane models go for for around $150 so yea you can sell it for more than you paid for it. The rumor now is there will be a hardware refresh this fall too so I'm thinking about listing mine

All of my video content is compatible with iTunes so why the need for all the crap offered by Plex and other jailbroken apps?

iVl watches specified folders, then converts the video files automatically, renames them just the way I want them, adds the metadata info, moves them to the folder I want (deleting the original), and then adds it to iTunes. I have to do nothing. I come home and my shows and movies are all ready to watch.

This also means I can use the much nicer polished interface of the Apple TV rather than that of Plex and I can get right to my content rather than having to launch the Apple TV, launch Plex, then launch my content.

And I can watch 1080p content. Enjoy your poverty 720p.

If you think Plex has to be launched on aTV then I don't think we're talking about the same thing. Plex GUI is prettier than Apple's IMHO. Not sure what "iVl watches specified folders" means, but my Plex server equally adds the metadata, organizes the files and does it all for me. Surprise, surprise, but a lot of content is not iTunes compatible and I don't wish to convert it. My guess is that you could not tell 1080p from 720p if you were tested blindly.

No, for me it's been just the opposite-- quite speedy updates, typically about 10 minutes, give or take. Never have had a "two laundry" experience-- nice description, though! :)

Yes. Access the plex server web interface via <yourplexhost>:32400/web or manually add its IP as a server in the iOS Plex App with the LAN side address and VPN and it'll also give you a chance to move your quality UP/DOWN depending on your home upload speed.

Up front apology if someone else already responded with the info

You can use Plex without jailbreak. I have it on my ATV3 and it works beautifully. Selling both my jailbroken ATV2's on ebay right now (1 sold for $340 other is still available). If I want xbmc plugin's I have a HTPC or I can get a cheap Android stick for $50. I've had the ATV2's jailbroken for several years and they've worked great. I've mainly ran xbmc on them but I just don't have a need for them anymore since switching to Plex. The ATV2 is for suckers. Cash out now if you still have them...

I actually gave my parents an 2nd Gen Apple TV because they're over 50 and probably can't benefit much from the 1080P but they each have an iPhone 4S with the plex app.

2 other 3rd Gen ATVs in the house as well but AirPlay is a perfect, albeit temporary, solution for getting ANY piece (DRM excluded) of content on ANY tv at ANY time

I suppose it's all personal preference. The current Apple TV 3 does everything I want without issue. Plex offers nothing I want. I just put $100 in my pocket and fulfilled my needs so I'm good.

I worked in the cable industry for years. I can tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p with ease.

For example...

Dear god, yes. This.

I'm not comparing it to Cox et al... I'm comparing it to a decently written UI... like ATv. all cable box UIs suck....

As for issues I have with att...well...

1. Try and find and schedule a recording of a program 7 days from now....and tell me how stupid it is.
2. Slowness...everywhere. That new little spinning swrille is as bad as a multicolored beachball I've seen on you know who's computers
3. Browsing thru your recordings and then try to back track...you cant easily. You have to start the entire process from the beginning.
4. The layout of premium channels and searching for a specific program sucks. There is no other word for it.
5. And why cant I watch my recordings on my idevice like Cox? wtf is that about.

There is a lot more but you get the picture.

Oh yeah, it's SUPER nice, that's the first thing I do with a new (or totally restored) ATV, is get an IOS device connected for text/password entry!

Using the stock remote will drive you _mad_. :D

That was my main complaint. For Apple to make this so cumbersome is unusual.

Since the sharing library airplays it to the tav, why not let us ok/type password etc. it from the computer the sharing library is on.

I want to play my games through Apple TV with no lag!

That may require a hardware update. One which I think could happen shortly.

----------

I hope that it is anything you have on your device you will be able airplay it. I can dream.

You already can. That's basically what AirPlay mirroring is all about.

This alleged feature isn't really AirPlay at all. The Apple TV would still be downloading the material directly from the servers. Etc. Just after using the AirPlay connection to basically temporarily log out of my iTunes account and into yours since you are the one that bought it. Once we got that one thing the Apple TV goes back to my account. And I never see your password etc cause it was never on my device. So you can't forget to log out and end up playing for stuff I buy forgetting I'm not on my account.

----------

Wonder if they'd do something where the game is installed on the Apple TV and an app installed on your handheld iOS device turns it into a customizable control surface tailored to suit the games commands. This'd let the game run fast on the ATV, and minimal data streaming over wifi run light & fast as well.

Given that the flip already exists for developers I am thinking no. Probably not. Any apps will be viewing related not games and such.

Or at least not for the foreseeable future. Particularly when they won't detect the current apps and let us download what we want.

----------

Why can't Apple announce these types of things at it's events?

For Apple's stock NOT to fall, all Tim needed to do was put up a slide with pictures of watches, tvs, laptops and iPads and say 'more exciting products to announce in October.'

Very, very silly that Tim can't do this.

1. Not Apple's style. They don't announce until it is ready for the public to buy it. That way there are no delays

2. Even if he did, the stock would still fall.
