You have *always* been able AirPlay content on your device to any Apple TV - no dreaming required. This is about content purchased from Apple but not on your device. Assuming this report is right, you'll now also be able to use AirPlay to view that material on someone else's Apple TV.

That is what I was referencing, should have been more clear. Those items you have in the cloud, not purchased, will you be able to play that also on another apple tv that is not yours? Songs you uploaded via itunes match etc.

Alternatively, if someone visits you and brings their iPhone or iPad, you can watch all the movies and TV shows they bought on _your_ Apple TV without paying.

Why can't Apple announce these types of things at it's events?

For Apple's stock NOT to fall, all Tim needed to do was put up a slide with pictures of watches, tvs, laptops and iPads and say 'more exciting products to announce in October.'

Very, very silly that Tim can't do this.

Jail time if it isn't true and he knew it.

I would really love to be able to organize my AppleTv channels like I can organize my apps on my phone. Move the stuff I use the most to the top and the stuff I don't to the bottom.

Also, the remote lag is terrible sometimes, I wish I could make a BT connection from my phone directly to the ATV. And I wish I didn't have to unlock my phone to use the remote app, when you want to pause it can take around five seconds for you to unlock, the remote app reconnects, then it responds to your tap to play or pause.

Edit:
Also, I hope the Netflix gets updated to be more like the PS3 Netflix app. It pretty much sucks in comparison.

Will fix Ethernet issue?

The last software update killed the Ethernet ports for many (not all) Apple TV users. I wonder if there's anyway to find out if the new update will address that?

I don't get it. I can already do this. I can access iTunes from my ATV 3, buy a moving or a show and start watching it immediately. I don't need an iPhone, iPad or Mac computer.

Read the description. This new feature has nothing to do with anything you described.

Except [as I understand it], the Wii U uses a proprietary 5.2GHz 802.11n variant and the GamePad (assuming that's what you're referring to) communicates directly the main console, so there's a lot less overhead (and way more performance potential) between the two devices.

I sencerely doubt Apple couldn't find a more ambitious way like Nintendo did.

And Apple is king of proprietary, AirPlay itself is. They could easily do the same. WiFi-Direct-like...

Also, when at a friend's place, bonus for not having to get WiFi keys from the router, a manual or whathaveyou

I have no use for an Apple TV until it receives Amazon VOD. Ill stick to a much better Roku product for now, Airplay is completely useless to me and doesn't entice me even in the slightest.

I have Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu...there's nothing that I can't get on an AppleTV that Amazon provides.

I'm not sure about iTunes Match content that exists only in the cloud. What I do know is that you already can stream via AirPlay any audio/video content -- whether purchased from Apple or not -- that you transfer to your iOS device from iTunes. So, for example, if you rip a movie to an iTunes-compatible format, you can transfer it to your iPhone, then go to your friend's hip yet unassuming apartment and use AirPlay to watch the movie on her AppleTV. The new feature reportedly adds one additional feature that benefits only those who buy the content from Apple. In that case, those people can still use AirPlay to stream the content to someone else's AppleTV, the difference being that they don't ever need to first put the content on their iOS device. Hope that helps clarify.

You can re-arrange all but the top row of icons:

All of my video content is compatible with iTunes so why the need for all the crap offered by Plex and other jailbroken apps?

iVl watches specified folders, then converts the video files automatically, renames them just the way I want them, adds the metadata info, moves them to the folder I want (deleting the original), and then adds it to iTunes. I have to do nothing. I come home and my shows and movies are all ready to watch.

This also means I can use the much nicer polished interface of the Apple TV rather than that of Plex and I can get right to my content rather than having to launch the Apple TV, launch Plex, then launch my content.

And I can watch 1080p content. Enjoy your poverty 720p.

I'll bite

I imagine those 1080p files are tiny rips. It's cool to automate stuff to be downloaded, converted, moved while I'm away. But some may prefer convenience of downloading something any time, in any file format and just play.
Without a jailbroken/tweaked AppleTV that's a limitation I can't live with. 'Poverty' 720p aint that bad. Especially depending on screen size and viewing distance.

This is a diagram of MFi controller, with low airplay lag we would have a great gaming console. There isn't enough space and power in ATV for games.

I'm totally with you, my point was the Nintendo implementation is faster for obvious technical reasons, not that Apple couldn't also do something like that as well, but choosing to use standard WiFi across a network makes it prone to more latency.

I'd also image Nintendo making the gaming experience a priority vs. Apple making a simple network screen sharing system that's great for photo/video/web/info-apps/puzzle-games, but potentially introduces some experience issues with action type games.

Love your idea of direct connection type solution like AirDrop (assuming the ATV as it sits could do this with just software[?]).

We've actually played from pretty perky platform type games using AirPlay and didn't have too much latency, but the downstairs ATV is on a GB wire, and on the same GB switch that has a dual channel N access point right at the TV, so we're probably in as optimal of a network situation as possible. :)

The idiots are the ones that use Apple TV as is. Jailbroken ATV2 + Plex is worth a lot more that ATV3. Without jail braking, you'd be better off with a Roku

You can use Plex without jailbreak. I have it on my ATV3 and it works beautifully. Selling both my jailbroken ATV2's on ebay right now (1 sold for $340 other is still available). If I want xbmc plugin's I have a HTPC or I can get a cheap Android stick for $50. I've had the ATV2's jailbroken for several years and they've worked great. I've mainly ran xbmc on them but I just don't have a need for them anymore since switching to Plex. The ATV2 is for suckers. Cash out now if you still have them...

With this setup you don't need to download anything manually. All of your TV shows, movies, etc are all waiting for you with zero user interaction. As soon as the new episode is out, the file is converted and ready to go much faster than if you search manually, download it and watch it.

Uh an update about a year ago already allow you to rearrange the apps on the Apple TV like on your phone. The apps even wiggle just like iOS. Just hold down on any app on the ATV and there you go. You can also go to Parental Controls and hide the ones you don't want to show.

Just Fix the Apple TV Show Layout.

All I really want out of apple TV is better organization for content from your computers iTunes library (much like what found in iTunes 11 now).

What I mean by this is TV shows not showing up individually as seasons in a list. Because when you have hows with 5+ seasons its gets annoying have to scroll though all the clutter. Just a list of the shows you have, and wend you click said show it hows the seasons, then choose your season to show the episodes. Simple and organized.

Apple TV Today:

Band of Brother Season 1
Battlestar Galactica Season 1
Battlestar Galactica Season 2
Battlestar Galactica Season 3
Battlestar Galactica Season 4
Castle Season 1
Castle Season 2
Castle Season 3

How it should be setup (First Screen Shows, Second Seasons, Third Episodes)

Band of Brothers
>Season 1
Battlestar Galactica
>Season 1
>Season 2
>Season 3
>Season 4
Castle
>Season 1
>Season 2
>Season 3

I know its a small thing to complain about but for people a with massive library of TV as an alternative to Cable/Satellite it would be a big improvement.

I hope to god one of the things they finally address is the way the ATV handles Seasons. Having separate line entries for each season blows and needs to be fixed
