I often do not shut my Mac down. I just put it to sleep, but it's still "on."
Because if you read UHF's documentation it talks about being able to work with your VPN.

I haven't been shutting down computers for 10+ years now, at least ... I think much longer the more I think about it.
Not everyone owns a Mac. If all I had was a Mac Mini, I probably couldn't relate either.

You don't have to use that -- that's an optional feature they provide if one has that need.

Exactly, but it's there, and it can be used. Someone is going to get on them eventually, or they may be forced to remove that feature. I'm just saying.
Move to San Diego and see how your electric bill might change your habits.

And if they get hassled, they remove it --- it used to not be there.
The app is not in jeopardy.. I don't understand why you are focusing on that so much.

Yeah, this can go round and round, but if you recall, this all started by someone making a blanket statement that running a media server doesn't use any more electricity and then went on like everyone owns a Mac that shouldn't cost more than $1/mo.
Everyone is different.

We turn them on and off again when we’re done. Last time I activated Apple TV to watch Slow Horses with my wife and I watched the latest of season of For All Mankind, which is now more politics than sci-fi, but anyway.
HBO, Disney and Apple TV go on and off when necessary. The only things that are permanent here are Netflix and YouTube Premium. I only turn a service on when an entire new season is available. None of this one episode per week nonsense.

Can I post my opinion? If you're not worried then don't sweat it. Maybe it happens, maybe it doesn't.
High energy prices aren't unique to San Diego. That's going around the rest of the country too, given certain factors going on in the world right now.

Well, I do live in SoCal so electricity is expensive...
Ever since I got my 2017 iMac and then my Mac Studio in 2022 I always leave the desktop on, sleep mode does not really use that much electricity ... I only turn it off when out of town for a couple days or more...
I have no idea how much it costs, my AC and EV sure are using 90% or so of my electricity, and I don't care.
But to each their own

That is true, my PC desktops (prior to 2006) and the my MacPro tower did get turned off at night, those were certainly suckers for electricity... luckily esp with M series chips, Apple desktops do just fine in that regard
Hard to run a media server on a sleeping Mac. That's the context of this whole off-topic thread.
If I didn't have a Plex server, my PC would be off at night.

Not in the US but was offered 2 months halfprice when I tried to cancel over here.
If they had more shows I wanted to watch I'd probably stay. The long season breaks don't really encourage yearly subscriptions, i.e. Severance, Pluribus, etc.

I continue to believe Apple TV isn't worth it, and this just cements that.
Everyone says it's the new HBO but I just don't see it. I do like the choice of some of the scifi series they've chosen to make into shows but...something about all their productions has this sameness to it and I don't like it. Hard to define.

Well, using Home Sharing is my scenario. I'm not familiar with other scenarios so I don't speak to them. Call that cherry-picking if you want.
FYI, where you are it would cost you $0.18 USD per month to leave a Mac on standby, and about $1.44 per month on idle if Plex doesn't work on standby (Home Sharing does). It would pretty quickly start saving you money to get a used Mac Mini to be your media server.

Well, my MacStudio is actually my media server, for ripped content and it actually works fine, even in sleep mode...
But I get the point re using a PC...
I do have a Mac Mini M4, I might look into seeing what it would take to migrate my Plex Server from PC to Mac.
I would need to attach external storage as I have over 12TB of media, but it might be worth looking into.
