This squeezing every penny out of consumers needs to stop. Apple has lost it.
That's just how capitalism works. Once the company doesn't have any real new fresh ideas it has to start squeezing the customers to keep that number going up. It sucks, but that's how capitalism works. As much as we complain, they will continue down this road...

The new design is just bad.

95% of the screen on my iPhone is an ad for a show I’ve already watched, whereas the most useful feature of the whole experience is only just visible.

Apple TV experience is just as bad.

Up Next on ATV is so great, and also means I could cancel
Netflix since it doesn’t appear in there at all.

True, why advertise a show/film that has been watched already? That should be placed in a separate history page. Including the ones that have been watched partly.

Also, there's still an essential button missing... the "not interested" or "dislike" button that will push away content we certainly won't watch. Recently one of the streaming services was pushing some stupid soccer documentary which I certainly will never watch. For weeks it cluttered the upper main app screen. I'm fine with suggestions, but I want to be able to remove those that I'm not interested in.

I think that Apple force feeding their own shows on the top of the Watch Now screen is total crap and is 100% indefensible from a premium product. This is not a $30 Amazon device that is sold for nothing to sell subscriptions. The AppleTV is one of the most premium steaming products on the market And this feels like promoting themselves over what the users is actually using the device for.

If Apple wants to push their own programming instead of the Up Next bar (which was a large marketing point for Apple for a number of years), then give users the option after the upgrade to select a Watch Now screen that focuses on new content or one that focuses on content already being viewed.

I get you can change something’s back under options but it is still not the same; it should continue to be first row of watch now displaying show icons of things you have been watching with the entire upper portion showing the still frame. I don’t care about watching “Foundation” and I can promise you my 6yo feels the same way when she is trying to get to her shows. Why is the ad for it taking up 90% of my screen.

STOP showing Apple TV + down my throat - the service sucks and I did not even use 2 days of my 6 free month - the mix of payed and included content is a MESS - now remove it from my apple TV so I can use Netflix - one thing is that I can not delete the app - or remove it from the screen, but you are trying to force me, and cheat me with hard to push buttons and easy to accidently push your TV+ - THIS IS NOW HOW IT IS DONE

Yes you can change it back in the options but tbh if it ain't broke comes to mind

There's plenty of actual useful features they could implement like sub folders for itunes films and tv shows , I've got 500 movies and dredging through them is such a chore , surely they could change the size of the icons or maybe a list view ??

While we’re all giving the Apple TV app a kicking, here’s my peeve and it’s nothing to do with layout. If I use the app to find a show or film that I want to watch it will search across all the services/apps that I have installed and available to me. That’s really handy. What’s not handy is that more and more Apple offers me the most expensive option, usually (surprise surprise) involving me paying something extra to them, even when I can watch the show for free. A classic example is iPlayer or All4 (I’m in the UK) both of which provide all their content for free since it’s already been broadcast. If there is an option to buy the series for keeps via Apple, that will be the option presented to me, rather than to simply watch for free on demand. They don’t even bother to show both options. Whenever I see a paid offering, 99 times I can go and search the underlying apps (which takes much longer) and I’ll find a free version. Apple, that’s just deceitful in my opinion.

Its very annoying.
But...
Ive made sure its on my top shelf, and changed it to show up next - much nicer than going into the TV app now.

Any kind of movie or TV trailers should be illegal, because they always spoil. Especially if you pay for a service, you should get a compensation, because the trailer has damaged the product that you have paid for.

I hate any kind of recommendation algorithms anyway. At least the ones you can't disable. Recommendation algorithms are the reason why so many annoying people became rich and famous.

Totally agree on this. The new design devotes 80% of screen space to advertising and intentionally hides the up next. The whole reason we have all the third party apps integrating is for the up next feature and now it’s some side feature.

The only way I’ve found to make it better is to change the settings for Top Shelf to show up next. So at least on the damn Home Screen I can see what my up next shows are without big adverts taking over.

If I want to watch something in the "Up Next" section, it's only one press of ⬇️ on the remote. And if it's something further down the "Up Next" list, it requires a press of the ➡️ . So what's the big deal? What am I missing?
Actually it’s two presses down, one down only gets you to the promoted show. And that’s already super annoying. Also, the whole screen moves down when you’re in the “Up next” row instead of staying on top as it used to be. It’s just confusing and annoying.

I don’t see what you’re describing. I get the other options first:

Just to clarify for anyone who reads this, these instructions don't pertain to the TV app, which is what the article is about. Up Next for Top Shelf is an Apple TV Home Screen setting, there isn't an option to move Up Next in the TV app.
Not quite true, the settings “Up next display” and “Autoplay video sound” do affect the TV app.
You can’t stop the video autoplay though which is the most annoying part.

It’s all changeable.

Settings -> Apps -> TV

Change “Up Next Display” to Poster Art to see covers again.

Change Top Shelf to “Up Next” to put it back at the top.

Change “Autoplay Video Sound” to Off to disable autoplay.
Thanks for that. Now if I can only persuade Netflix to put My List at the top of their menu I’ll be happy.

First world problems. You are not going to please everyone. And there are a good group of people that always like to whinge. Much more going on in the world at the moment other than your I don’t like it rants. Seriously get a grip people.
Thats a bit harsh isnt it.

I guess you arent a regular user of an AppleTV then? or at the least you dont take advantage of the up next feature.

For me, the up next functionality is the sole reason I have the AppleTV as it enables me to not have satellite/cable services any more - but thats only possible due to the aggregating 'up next' feature. Its great. It replaces a recording queue very nicely.

So... before it was front and centre so to speak in the TV app - and a press of the TV button on the apple remote took you straight there - to the thing thats important i.e. your waiting shows and movies to be watched - no distractions. If you wanted some viewing recommendations then all you needed to do was to scroll down below your up next list.

Now that up next has been relegated to lower down, which in itself isnt a huge deal, but the fact you have to get through auto playing ads for other content before you can get to your up next list is what is understandably annoying people. First world? sure I guess so - but you could say that about every single 'whinge' people make about technology.

It's the 'whinging' that tells Apple that they have made a downgrade step and it's adversely affecting a lot of their users. Long may it continue.

Before this, people complained that the "Featured" row was at the top and buried the "Up Next" row.

Now they're complaining the "Up Next" row is back at the top?
No people are complaining because there's a giant ad at the top and you have to scroll down to go to up next, and then your up next are these tiny little thumbnails rather than the half display screenshot or poster art as it was before.

I like it anyway an off switch (especially for audio) can make everyone happy. I've discovered two series with this new design.
