The worst product Apple has ever made, it's made by retards, time to hang it up Ive, you're dragging Apple down.

Name calling doesn't change the fact that you were too lazy to check what you were buying ... not the company's fault.

Now, does Apple need to do something better with the Apple TV? Absolutely agree with you!

However that aside the keyboard design sucks, they've tried to fix it with the iPhone input... but that sucks. I keep getting notifications every frigging time I want to type something on screen, that notification leads to nowhere and I have to manually open the Apple TV remote app instead... wtf?
The notification can be swiped to the left to show view. Tap that and you input in the notification. The remote app isn't required to be on the device as it's built into iOS 10. It astounds me that no one can figure this out as it's literally the same way you can reply to messages in their notification.

... and the biggest thing is no Amazon.... like wtf? My Sony TV from 4 years ago downstairs has Amazon... everything has Amazon... no ITV, no 4od, no ****ING ****ING SDFHCXzfkdhpsgfzjkfjgk
That's straight up Amazon's fault. The Apple TV has a bloody App Store that anyone can develop for.

As far as universal search goes it's actually quite intuitive.
- Say, "show me classic movies with John Wayne directed by John Ford" and it'll take you to a platform agnostic view and give you a bunch of different choices you have immediate access to (including renting/buying them from iTunes).

- Say, "show me classic movies with John Wayne directed by John Ford on Netflix" and it'll slide up a view that shows just those movies on that specific service.

Siri is faster than on the iPhone and understands me perfectly fine even in a house with noisy small children. I like it a heck of a lot better than Roku's outdated UI with its massive 1/3 ad on the home screen. Can't speak about the Fire TV.

Apple has to take some blame, too. Apple TV would be vastly better if it had Amazon Prime, and in a searchable form. There is clearly a reason why Amazon have held out. Tim Cook should get on the phone to Jeff Bezos and say, "Let's get this sorted."

Agreed with the OP, in the U.K, the ATV4 is pointless compared to its peers. The only thing it offers of use is airplay.. but I am not going to spend north of £100 for that, especially since it won't airplay in 4K, which my iPhone 6s records in (atv3 airplays the same as atv4 so does the job).

If you buy a 4K tv you get all the apps you need -few of which are on atv, if you want games you buy a PlayStation or an Xbox, the atv4 serves no purpose whatsoever.
Agree with this I constantly see those who say you don't need 4K because there is no content. This is so wrong of course but what is really strange is that Apple sell devices that record in 4K but you cannot play it back on the ATV. It is not dissimilar to the fact that they are selling a new laptop and a new iPhone 7 and it is impossible to connect one to the other without buying a separate dongle.

Yes ^^^.... Amazon video, vudu, Fandangonow, and the like have their apps all over the place but, they all just decided not to make 1 more app for Apple TV...that has to be it:confused:

But then why doesn't Amazon support Chromecast in their app when it would be trivial to implement? Face it, Amazon doesn't want to put their apps on competitor's set top boxes. They want you to buy their FireTV. Apples cut of IAP and subscriptions is probably a factor, but isn't the only one, given the fact that they refuse chromecast too.

Amazon is on Roku who sells TONS of boxes but, for the most part I agree, they want you to buy their box. On the flip side how many boxes besides Apple tv have itunes? It works both ways and I think it's ridiculous. This is why my primary box is Roku, they except everybody, which gives them all of them except itunes.

Amazon wants to play the same game Apple does, buy our box and use only our service to buy and rent movies. Roku is the winner with all this crap.

I think the main issue here is that the OP is from the UK and we've been let down by the likes of Channel 4 and ITV where they (for whatever reason) have decided that the ATV isn't worth creating an app for.

Had those apps been created then there might have been a chance, but as it stands it's dead in the water over here.

Slightly different picture for you fine folk in the US, but I do agree that the OP should have read the specs before buying.

Me-I grab a few US films here and there for the digital collection when they're cheap enough via the digital shops/forums selling them, but bar that-doesn't get used that much anymore.

I disagree with almost everything you said - I love my AppleTV and use it all the time. I knew what features it had by reading the specs beforehand and it does all of those things for me very well. However I do agree the remote has some problems and I wish there were options to replace it with something better. With Siri integration tho, the remote bothers me a lot less than it did before.

The ATV itself is great and 1080p is more then enough (more didn't exist till just a year ago and the whole world watched TV anyways). The remote itself, however is a piece of s**t. When watching a movie it is impossible to pick up without affecting the play. It doen't have a clear top or bottom, so you are always in search for the right end. An that (yes lets call it a touch bar :)) completely sucks especially when used for typing. ATV very good Remote very BAD.

But Apple deliberately keeping mail and browsers from the ATV and apparently most users excepting this is just the worst.

Personally, this isn't a problem. It seems natural to always place the remote facing the TV and so it's easy just pick it up by the bottom end.

Agreed, but I find speech recognition/Siri to be fine.

If you really can't get on with it, you could consider using the old aluminium or white plastic apple remotes, a TV or AV receiver remote, or a universal remote. All can work with the ATV, although it seems a shame because (IMO) the remote and its UI integration are great features of ATV 4.

When i am laying on my couch, it just some where around my laying randomly.

Ok, but that doesn't change anything about the remote.

No, it doesn't, as the old remote is IR and the ATV4 doesn't have an IR sensor, because it works on bluetooth now.

Conclusion on all 3 counts: the ATV4 remote is horrible. I do have to say, that the bluetooth however is far better than the IR it used to have. Now you can just click, while with the IR Remote you had to be a sniper.

Strange: have of my reply is in the original message.

This is incorrect. The AppleTV 4 WILL WORK with IR remotes. I have a Harmony 650 that works with the ATV4. Although, I personally like the ATV4 remote, and use it 95% of the time over the Harmony.

As I and many others have suggested, adding a very inexpensive case to the remote does wonders. Try it out. I bought 5 silicone cases for $6 on eBay and have them on my 3 ATVs with 2 to spare. Good $6 spend for sure.

Overall I don't think the ATV is bad, but pretending it doesn't have some things that could be improved is sort of putting on the blinders. The OP has a valid point... the remote is a black rectangle with no discernible way to tell which way is "up" in the dark without picking it up and feeling. The unfortunate part of that is while you are figuring it out based on feel, if you pick up the trackpad end, it starts scrubbing through whatever your watching. During the day, less of an issue. At night when watching a movie in the dark, this is a problem. The strap loop/case isn't a bad idea but a little goofy to have to use for a remote IMO.

Another complaint - and maybe its just me - but when I scrub through a movie looking for a particular place, when I find it and go to click/play, I have to be very careful my finger doesn't "roll" or right as I click it will scrub further back or forward. But maybe that can be fixed by changing the sensitivity, I haven't tinkered with it yet.

I'm happy enough sideloading the tvbrowser app for now. The only thing I want it for is to be able to easily log into those idiotic hotel wifi logins.

But, yeah. Why not allow it on the app store? User experience I suppose. Mail would be a horrible UX IMO. At best it would be extremely limiting.

Because there is no Amazon app.
That's not proof. That's just speculation. Bezos is just as alpha male as Cook is. If he thinks it's a bad business move then he won't do it. Heck, Amazon pulled ALL of Apple's iDevices and Apple TVs from their own listings.

I swear Apple are losing the plot, their products in the past few years have been on the decline as the competitors have caught up and they just seem to make such poor design decisions. I'm sure Johnny Ive isn't the be all end all over there, but he needs to go, he is clearly out of good ideas. The Apple Pencil charging design, Apple Tv Remote design... the new Macbook keyboard design... NO TRAVEL SUCKS! I can point to an endless list of things lately, it's like they're not making products for Humans any more.

The Apple TV I've barely touched since I got it, I didn't realise at the time it had no 4K support... I assumed it did as 4K was very much the latest thing in 2015 for TVs, so tbh having a 4K TV I've just used another device. However that aside the keyboard design sucks, they've tried to fix it with the iPhone input... but that sucks. I keep getting notifications every frigging time I want to type something on screen, that notification leads to nowhere and I have to manually open the Apple TV remote app instead... wtf?

I talked abut the Apple TV remote design.. well I always pick it up the wrong was as it's designed all wrong. The touch pad is a horrible thing for navigating menu's, it's not precise, just give me a dpad or something. Why can't I just use my phone as a remote like Chromecast? I mean well designed remote that works seamlessly, not just an app replicating a remote, but just using your phone and clicking an icon whenever you want to play something? Not just a dated miracast type thing or an remote app.

On the topic of the remote, why does it always need syncing every other day? I swear I have more problems with it than any other thing... I constantly have "more connected and disconnected" messages all the time. So I reset the whole thing and that went away, just for it to become slow and laggy a couple days later... this is a constant cycle now and I only ever turn it on by mistake these days and just want to use it to put the thing to sleep.

Then you have the fact there is barely any apps for it, even my Samsung TV has all the built in channel apps for UK TV. Chromecast however is missing pretty much everything and the biggest thing is no Amazon.... like wtf? My Sony TV from 4 years ago downstairs has Amazon... everything has Amazon... no ITV, no 4od, no ****ING ****ING SDFHCXzfkdhpsgfzjkfjgk

I had AppleTVs 3 and 4, and cannot figure out what the hell you are talking about. Are you sure you own it and not just saw at a friend? And the remote/app stuff, the issue is on the couch

Didn't know that. thx.
[doublepost=1481566279][/doublepost]

I sure did. :) Thx
Don't be too happy though, as IR remote is severely limited compared to original one. Try going forward/backward in Netflix or YouTube video for example, or skipping to end.

ATV4 does not really have anything over ATV3. The apps are bad, remote is bad, no bitstream audio, no auto frame rate, etc etc. IMHO it is the worst product from Apple by far. Third party app support did not do anything to make it better. Netflix and YouTube are prime examples. I use Infuse sometimes, but it is nothing special. It's slow, does not really support metadata from .m4v, etc etc.

wow sounds like someone didn't do any research before making a decision and now wants to blame Apple. Seems like that's all this forum is anymore...

I love my aTV4 and use it constantly all day. None of the issues you have, then again, I know how to manage my expectations

But you see, Apple didn't make this device catering to pirates. It's for people who just want to sit down and put something on. Not torrent files, convert formats, store on NAS server, etc...I've found the 3rd party apps to be pretty great personally, remote works fine.
