sounds like

wow sounds like someone didn't do any research before making a decision and now wants to blame Apple. Seems like that's all this forum is anymore...

I love my aTV4 and use it constantly all day. None of the issues you have, then again, I know how to manage my expectations

But you see, Apple didn't make this device catering to pirates. It's for people who just want to sit down and put something on. Not torrent files, convert formats, store on NAS server, etc...I've found the 3rd party apps to be pretty great personally, remote works fine.

This is weak. Netflix and youtube ain't pirating. .m4v can be used for any content. Please, sit down, put something from netflix on and use IR remote to forward to the middle of the video, or try to skip 5 min, see... Or open youtube, watch a video and add it to your favorites, or like/unlike it, or see the channel, or try to do anything at all besides pause/stop/ff.

Yea I do most of these things all the time without problems. I don't really browse YouTube channels admittedly. I don't use an IR remote I use the Bluetooth one that came with it

Don't be too happy though, as IR remote is severely limited compared to original one. Try going forward/backward in Netflix or YouTube video for example, or skipping to end.

ATV4 does not really have anything over ATV3. The apps are bad, remote is bad, no bitstream audio, no auto frame rate, etc etc. IMHO it is the worst product from Apple by far. Third party app support did not do anything to make it better. Netflix and YouTube are prime examples. I use Infuse sometimes, but it is nothing special. It's slow, does not really support metadata from .m4v, etc etc.

I am pretty happy with the ATV4. The main improvement for me was he faster WiFi protocol (which the 3 didn't have). Now streaming movies via Beamer App usually works fine. Although Netflix is a horrible app, watching the movie itself worshippers fine. I don't like the remote and the app store. The app store only shows crap apps and crap games. There is hardly any useful app here, side loading is a prime requirement to get something useful on the ATV4.

This is incorrect. The AppleTV 4 WILL WORK with IR remotes. I have a Harmony 650 that works with the ATV4. Although, I personally like the ATV4 remote, and use it 95% of the time over the Harmony.

As I and many others have suggested, adding a very inexpensive case to the remote does wonders. Try it out. I bought 5 silicone cases for $6 on eBay and have them on my 3 ATVs with 2 to spare. Good $6 spend for sure.

+1 on the cheap silicone case. It has made the remote worlds better. Easier to hold, no doubt which end is up, and I'm not so paranoid about my 3 year old dropping and breaking it.

I thoroughly enjoy mine. Even with a 65" 4k HDR TV that has a 4k HDR built in app for Netflix, Youtube and such and a PS4 Pro for 4k Netflix I still use the ATV at 1080p. Just more convenient for me.

Remote took some getting used too but its better than using a PS4 controller or the Samsung remote....for me. I have a universal Logitech remote but the ATV remote can adjust volume for my receiver, turn on the TV (HDMI CEC) etc etc so I stopped using it. Occasionally I'll go back to the OEM remotes for devices because they are better for accessing settings then the Logitech anyway.

I love my aTV4 and whilst it could obviously be better (4K, optical out, missing apps) it's still much better than other media boxes I've used. The interface is quick, fast and simple to use and whilst I don't use the remote much, when I do it's not a problem.

Buying anything without really understanding what it can do is a pretty dumb move.

It astounds me that no one can figure this out as it's literally the same way you can reply to messages in their notification
I just got an TV and I figured it out! But it wasn't very intuitive and could have been handled better. Overall they made a good box, but it could have been made so much better. It should be geared and marketed to be a hub for a smart home, a home theater device, TV device and gaming device. In other words the center of every home's universe. Instead it seems like it still is kind of a hobby for Apple.

I like it enough, but it does leave me longing for a bit more. I think there is a lot of unfulfilled potential here. The only thing I don't like much is the remote. It's super small and thin making it easy to lose in the couch but the worst thing for me in winter, is that grabbing it is like grabbing a block of ice. All that metal and glass makes for a very cold feel in the hand! So guess I am going to be looking for a case for it! Or else I might just go with a universal remote. I don't think I will use Siri all that much anyway.

ATV4 should have latest A9X chip, 4GB RAM and 4K(hdmi 2.0 or higher) straight from the beginning. Even with lets say 100$ higher price. Now we have iPhone 6S and 7 with 4K video recording but no way to watch it. What a shame.

Better chip could also provide better and more powerful games etc. Now the games on ATV4 are a completely joke.

Not really a fan of the Apple TV 4 .. can't stand the remote. I use my fire tv for Netflix / amazon / Hulu and only use the Apple TV for watching my large iTunes movie collection

I've got a FireStick and aTV4 and would prefer to use the aTV everytime! The Amazon interface is clunky at best and it's seriously underpowered when you try and run 3rd party apps (Plex is so much nicer on the aTV). I only use the FireStick for Amazon Prime and would happily box it back up if they ever release a Amazon Video app on tvOS.

Just set up my new ATV4 that I got from Direct TV. I'm more than satisfied. Besides a great deal, I like the new IU over than my ATV3. No issues at this time.

I like the Apple TV, it is a quality device. I don't really like the remote, the navigation part at the top has a "funny" feel to me. I also would prefer just having a fire tv type remote. Although I generally use my phone as my remote anyhow. Having used mainly an Apple TV and Amazon Firetv, I don't really see anything that makes the Apple TV seem that much "better" than my Firetv. I think that is why ppl look at the Apple TV and say, what is the big deal? Almost any app I download on the Firetv I find on the Apple TV and vice versa. So I guess like most here say, unless you are hooked into ITunes heavily. There is no reason to pick one device over another. Which in a way is kind of disappointing to many ppl who remember a time not too long ago when Apple was always ahead of the game with regards to technology. Now not so much.

What would they sell you this (or next) year then?

In its own right the ATV4 is a first gen product. They wouldn't want to invest big into the product you are describing without the base the current model made for it to stand on. And if it was a flop (or more of a flop depending on opinions) they wouldn't have as much invested into it to lose.

When the ATV4 first launched apps and the OS in general was no where near as refined as it is now. And many apps still need a lot of improvement. When they finally do release your imagined AppleTV (or as close as Apple gets with it) a relatively mature OS will be there waiting. And people that pick it up because its 4K and they need stuff to utilize their new 4k TV they won't be massively let down by the quality of the software.

Things that are obnoxious to us are thought of by Apple for good reasons, the problem is they are business reasons.

[doublepost=1488735637][/doublepost]This is what happens when you dump all your American workers and load up on 4-to-a-cube Indians. Cheap labor produces cheap products.

Ive is an exec now and no longer involved in daily design decisions. That Zionist is. Surprise surprise.

There business employment decisions aside I feel Apple is similar to how Apple has been for over 2 decades with one main difference, no Steve Jobs.

People have always criticized their designs and how powerful their products were. Apple just used to excel at flip flopping and manipulating peoples thoughts.

I remember back in the PowerPC days they got on stage to debunk the "Mhz myth" and how the PowerPC is better at lower clocks then Intels offerings. And many benchmarks proved that. Intel is the enemy, PowerPC is the future, etc etc. Then SJ announces the Intel Macs and again we learn why its better vs PowerPC.

That was after we had those garish designs people loved, think different (ironically)!

Point to my rambling is without Steve Jobs their to tell people how to think people are actually beginning to "think different" and see how Apple works. Plus they aren't as maneuverable as they once were. Throwing ideas at the wall to see what sticks isn't good for your stocks. You are left with a slow moving company that takes very few real risk.

I swear Apple are losing the plot, their products in the past few years have been on the decline...the worst product Apple has ever made, it's made by retards, time to hang it up Ive, you're dragging Apple down.

As some other posters have replied, you should have done your research. You have yourself to blame for your anger and disappointment for purchasing the AppleTV.

While I agree with you in some points; overall I'm happy with my 4th gen. ATV.
We use it everyday in our household (for DIRECTV Now and to stream our many iTunes purchases).

In the past two months I've purchased an additional 4th gen. ATV (in addition to the three other 3rd gen's. In our household).

Your experience is unfortunate but not the norm.

I find myself forced to buy Nvidia, Apple being interested only in iPhone customers.

Topic title: "Apple TV was such a waste of money"

Response: I paid $150 for an AppleTV and have saved ~$1,000 on cable in the past year. Even netting out Netflix and other content purchases, I am still minimally $500 ahead. Clearly not a waste of money. If you don't like the ATV, cool, that's fine. There are several options out there that can be had for as little as $30. The good news is that there is plenty of choice.

Came to say exactly this. It's actually paid for itself several times over in our household. We find it very easy to use and have enjoyed it immensely. It's completely changed the way we view TV...for the better.

I also dislike the remote. I prefer to use the iPhone app instead. As for usage, my family still has cable and usually watch live programming well before we even get to the Apple TV.

If only Flixster would make an app for it, that would be great. Ended up buying a smart TV and that has the app. Go figure: Flixster makes an app for iPhone, iPad, iPod, Android (I assume), my Samsung TV AND BluRay player, but refuses to make one for Apple TV? Inconceivable!

Thought id add my 2 pence.

I love Apple TV. its all I use every day. My family use Sky Digital (UK Sat-TV Provider) all I use is Apple TV for AirPlay, Music app & YouTube.

Friends have Firestick, Chrome thing and other device and nothing works as good as Apple TV.

Personally I think Apple TV, Mac and iPhone is the best things Apple have come out with. I use them everyday and I'd be lost without Apple TV.

if you force touch the keyboard notification on your phone you can type right from the notification.

I use mine every day for Netflix, Hulu, and Channels. its the only set top box i use.

I don't know what you mean about syncing everyday. There is nothing to sync.
[doublepost=1490119609][/doublepost]i don't have a 4k TV, so it doesn't bother me that the Apple TV doesn't have it either. Although, if i owned a 4k TV at the time the aTV4 came out, i wouldn't have bought it due to lack of 4k. You didn't research the product you bought and just expected it to have what you wanted. That was your mistake. Return it and buy something that has 4k. Or return it and wait for the next Apple TV which will probably have 4k.

I am disappointed with my Apple TV, not for the quality of the device or software. The content I use and want not there. One example, I am an Amazon Prime user, painful to use on Apple TV. Apple TV OS universal with IOS extremely limited content. If I purchase on IOS, pixel gun 3D example, want to either purchase or have the ability to have the same app on Apple TV, No Airplay. Not happening. Actually more quality games on FireTV under Android, now that is saying something. A universal App Store would be nice. Why do I have to use my Apple TV to find and purchase content. I now use other devices when Apple TV could easily be my go too device. Content rules, Apple TV way behind for my viewing choices.

I just really hate the remote, I hate the button placement, how fragile it is and the fact that button mapping is so god awful in some apps. (PS Vue comes to mind)

Fragile? Have you broken yours? I am still on the original one which I purchased on day one. My family members have dropped it countless times on our hardwood floor, and it hasn't skipped a beat.

Well, it partially made out of glass, my g/f has been known to drop our harmony on the wood floor pretty often. Guessing this won't hold up well against a wood floor.

thankfully I have another remote so we rarely use it, but there are some apps that exclusively use the touch pad which means we have to use it. It is good to know it has held up on your end though.
