Surprised HDR support is being considered. Very few players offer it. (for YT) Just a handful of TVs and I don’t think any set-top box does? More bummed that 4k seems to be stuck at 30fps.

And it's doing it without the T2 chip!! 😂
I believe the T2 chip is based on the A10. The AppleTV 4K has the A10X Fusion chip. It doesn't technically have the T2, but it does have the necessary capabilities of the T2.

I figured you are just trying to be smart/funny. But to those who don't get this, the Apple TV 4K is running Apple Silicon (Apple A10X) and has the secure enclave already. There is no need for a T2 equivalent on the Apple TV.
Yeah it was part joke, part truth. You can watch YouTube in 4K on any Mac/Win computer without the T2 chip simply by using Google Chrome. One thing I think Safari users are hopeful for is lower CPU utilization than Chrome for 4K playback when Big Sur arrives.

Did not know that about the 4K Apple TV model, that's interesting. Isn't T2 utilization purely speculation at this point? As in, they may be saying those models are required, but not actually using that chip.

So, is HDR not supported on YouTube for Apple TV? I checked my 4k Apple TV after reading the article, and still only 1080p. Also made sure my Youtube app was the latest version. I asked about HDR, because one of my main channels on YouTube for testing HDR / 4K is the HDR channel.
Nope, HDR isn't supported - I've got 4K videos but anything in HDR just displays in SDR 1080 or 1440.

Thank You! I bet that's why I was only getting HD for the videos I tested. Because they are also HDR. I really like YouTube HDR content, some is really well done. I guess if I want full YouTube support though, I'll have to stick to one of my non apple streaming devices.

As far as the devices I own, my Samsung Smart TV Tizen OS plays YouTube HDR content and the Roku Ultra and Roku Streaming Stick+ does as well, along with Google’s Chromecast Ultra of course. The only devices I own that doesn’t play YouTube HDR is the Apple TV 4K and the Chromecast 1080p.

Am I the only one who has lost 4k YouTube on macOS Big Sur?
make sure your VP9 codecs are turned on. go to developer experimental features. I had to set VP9 on battery, even if I am on power adapter, but it works great

"It's unclear if the lack of HDR is temporary or a limitation on the 4K ‌Apple TV‌". for clarification, the AppleTV 4K handles HDR, so the limitation would be from YouTube!

I can vouch for myself that on my 2018 Mac Mini connected to a Sonnet Vega 56 eGPU the Mac Mini CPU fan would rev up loudly and my CPU temps would reach 90+ degrees Celsius when playing YouTube 8K videos in Firefox, Chrome, Opera, however since Safari Big Sur started supporting YouTube 4K, those same YouTube 8K videos no longer cause the fan to rev up loudly during video playback in Safari and my CPU temps only reach around 65+ degrees in average. So it’s definitely more CPU friendly

What? Virtually all HDR TVs and HDR set-top boxes support HDR on YouTube except for the Apple TV.

I get 4K HDR in the YouTube app on my Roku Ultra and in the LG webOS YouTube app.

Apple is the only one who’s behind in this regard.
