Yeah, looking at that coverage map the 3G iPhone would be really worth waiting for, wouldn't it. How many people use 3G to its full potential in the UK anyway? The current 3G phones I've seen/used eat battery, the UI sucks and the data prices are ruinous. To be honest I'd be happy with EDGE and better battery life plus a reasonably-priced unlimited data plan. Couple that with the iPhone UI and I think you've got a winner, even without 3G.

When you compare prices you also have to think about comparing wages and lifestyle.

No. You don't.

Odd thing is... the games and books produced by the company I freelance for cost more or less the same in the US as they do in the UK.

Now there is a tarrif on LCD displays manufactured outside the EU (which has nothing to to with wages and lifestyle) which cover some a chunk of price difference between US and UK costs for things.

Wages and lifestyle has nothing to do with it. $1 is worth $1 (or about 50p right now).

Anyone who says different is ripping you off (sure exactly the same software from Adobe just happens to cost 70% more here - exactly why????? Of couse Windows costs twice as much in the EU as id does in the US...)

Sorry, but I completely disgree with this as would any sane business who sells products in different countries.

I dont know what games you produce but most console games in the states are $40-50. Most games in the UK are £40.

UK insurance on iPhone

Any ideas on how to insure the iPhone when it hits the UK?

I understand the whole activation thing. But lets say I break my iPhone, then goto an Apple store and buy another. Will I be able to activate it under the terms of the existing contract? Is that allowed with the AT&T deal?

Or, say I can find insurance with a 3rd party, and they send me a cheque for a replacement iPhone, what happens then?

Usually, I guess, the insurer would buy me an 'unlocked' device - but in this case that may not wash if the activation process gets shirty. I'll get insurance direct with the carrier if they offer it, but I suspect they may not immediately, if at all.

I believe if you have another handset they let you just "swap" your phone on your account... so that shouldn't be a problem.

I agree completely... this is what I would prefer when (and IF) Canada ever gets it.

The main advantage of 3G support is for the carriers, they can make use of all that (expensive but paid for) spectrum rather than trying to squeeze everyone in their existing 2G spectrum.

I suspect Apple is probably insisting on unmetered tariffs for EDGE use for the iPhone, but that doesn't mean the carriers are happy with it and service is likely to be poor.

The situation is different in the US, where AT&T runs 2G and 3G on the same frequencies, so it doesn't matter as much whether the iPhone offers EDGE or UMTS. That may change over the next few months as both T-Mobile and AT&T have substantial amounts of new spectrum (2100/1700MHz) that they can only use with UMTS.

All of which means that I think anyone concerned over the lack of 3G support should hold in there. It is coming. Apple's partners are likely to never do business with Apple again if they don't come up with a 3G iPhone within the year. Don't make the mistake of buying a 2G iPhone and signing up for a two year contract thinking the 3G version is a pipedream that Apple isn't interested in making.

Instead of having a "dick in Brussels" deciding for you, you have a dick in London doing the exact same thing....

True, but the dick in London is at least vaguely in touch with British culture and politics.

Only vaguely, I'll admit, but that's more than some random guy in Brussels

Being like One Big Happy Country doesn't sound good, it works with a small constituency like the UK but Europe takes up half the world. If one EU law is a screwup... like all these software patents and things... then half the world has to suffer that screwup. At least the USA seems to have different laws for different states... (law being just one example)

I asked in an earlier comment on this page about whether, if you break your iPhone, you can replace it with another without signing a new 2 year contract. Apparently they let you 'swap' the phone on the account.

If that's the case, can you simply walk into an apple store when a 2nd generation model is out, and upgrade your phone without signing a new contract?

This seems to undermine one of the main restrictions of the contract, i.e. that you're stuck with a handset for the duration. Which is great, but this is quite a departure for contract phones. I guess the phone is 100% unsubsidsed so it should make sense, but it still confuses me for some reason!

I also wonder if AT&T take a cut of sales from each handset sale. This would make lax restrictions on upgrading the handset more believable. Also it would mean they get some compensation every time somone buys a phone to hack onto a different network.

or maybe im just confused over nothing!

Mum's the word?
Engadget has some info on the iPhone already having a bluetooth chip, just not turned on (or with an ok from the FCC i guess). I wonder, coud that be coming before 3G ...looking at how O2'#s prepping 2.5G :/ (or it could be a 3G fall back, or or it's too hard to double guess Apple)

Edit: iTunes update, iTunes Wi-Fi Store, possible new widgets, chat, picture messaging (MSM), social networking) location-based services, MMS support, home networking and integration with Mac OS X Leopard. could be possible apparently looking at an article on 9to5mac.com

Just Wondering....?

We have all heard about o2 supposedly setting up a EDGE network in line to release an EDGE enabled iPhone in the UK as opposed to the more desired 3G one, but what about in France and Germany. Both Orange and T-Mobile are expected to be releasing the iPhones in these countries before the end of the year, yet do they have the network in place to run an EDGE enabled phone?

Surely they would if they want to sell the EDGE version of the iPhone unless they are going to skip the EDGE and go straight to 3G. Mmmm more speculation. I think I'm going to miss all the hype once its finally released. haha

At this stage can anyone be certain of anything? The other point to bear in mind is that they'll almost certainly require you pay full price for the thing, and I doubt the first 3G iPhone will cost the same as the 2G iPhones it replaces.

iPhone has had Bluetooth from the beginning, it certainly is turned on, Apple even sells a (somewhat expensive) bluetooth headset specifically aimed at iPhone owners.

The discussion about BT's availability is with iPod Touch, where many of us would like it to be a part of that system, but it turns out it doesn't officially have it (and at this stage nobody knows if the hardware is there, but disabled, or whether the hardware is completely absent.)

But iPhone has Bluetooth and fully supports it.

true true. I would expect to pay the same ore more for a second gen. just want to know that I can.

I'm not wealthy, so I hope I never have to do this. It's just my faith has been damaged by a Nokia n80; the email client has never worked satisfactorily, after 3 replacements... go nokia, real smart! As a result I expect I've wasted a fortune on wireless cafes for my mac to access email, and wasted man hours travelling home to check for important work emails etc

I need an iPhone deseperately for remote email, so im waiting on a UK release. My concern this time is if its EDGE the email might not be much better... If I can buy a 3G version later I guess that concern is diluted a little.

thanks for yout thoughts.

It's very interesting indeed that their is a briefing for staff before hand and that the hours will then be extended to 10pm.

My imagination is running riot that the iPhone will be available after the announcement.

I would guess that the extended opening hours are simply so that the shop will still have eight hours trading time (2pm-10pm).

It's the staff briefing that's intriguing me!

Right. So who here's gonna be there at 4pm sharp to get our new 16GB 3g iPhones? I am for sure! :D

The logical side of my brain thought the same, just giving the store a normal decent opening time.

Doesn't stop me hoping for the announcement ending with 'iPhones available from all Apple stores NOW'. Think how great that would be - and would explain the briefing for Apple store staff.

I love this hype and excitement - makes it all the more fun!

That would do away with the overnight queuing and all the extra publicity.
