Well, I know one Apple exclusive that will be launching on the 18th - at least in the US. According to B&W USA, their Zeppelin iPod speaker dock will launch on Tuesday. It will apparently only be sold by Apple online and select Apple stores (40 chosen stores in the US). What's odd is that B&W didn't show the Zeppelin at CEDIA a week ago, so I guess they letting Apple handle all the PR fanfare. Of course that really isn't a surprise as Apple seems to demand that with all their partnerships.

I know that B&W is HQed in the UK, but the Zeppelin isn't supposed to be available in Europe until early 2008. Man, I hope you guys don't get shafted by some funky Led Zeppelin announcement tied in with the B&W speaker dock release. I've had my iPhone since the US launch and I hope you guys in the UK see it launched on Tuesday.

You mean to say you never got the same mid-morning "I wish I could buy a Mac right now.." feeling I got?

Haha..thats what the internet is for!

How about the mid-morning "I wish I could buy a Big Mac right now."

I managed to blag it as a journalist. They're phoning me again on Monday with all the info. I'll take my MacBook and post on here as soon as I hear everything.

Sweet ;)

that would be major disappointment!! They'd have to give us iPhone details just because of the hype surrounding the event!!

ok let's get serious here, does anyone seriously think the phone will be available on tuesday?
it would be unfair if they were only on sale in London and surely the staff would have been told already, I live near the new store in Glasgow and I am dreaming right now. press event 10 am - in stores for 11 oh yes.

calm down I am having a heart attack!!!!!!!!!!!!

realistically i dont think they will be available straight away. Even if they are, it will probably only be from regent street and ordering online. That still wont stop me going down to my o2 store once the event is over. (if they're released and all)
I think it will just be announcement of pricing, and when they will be available. But life is worthless if you have no hopes, so i hope for the first scenario!!

I think the Event will reveal all of the details about the iPhone's European/UK launch.

The 90 minute briefing before the store opens is to brief the employees about the contracts, prices, etc. And so that they can get a hands-on tutorial of the iPhone that will be on demo at the Regents Street Store before its launch sometime in October.

Agreed. I think it would be unwise in terms of business to rush into a launch straight away. By announcing it now, information about the iPhone will begin to filter into mainstream press and build up even more steam for the actual launch.

Although within the 'technically-aware' group of people the iPhone seems like the biggest news about, in terms of your average UK person its pretty unknown. Giving an anouncement now and then launching in a couple weeks will allow more of a media storm and much more widespread awareness..

Having said all that, you just never know....so keep your fingers crossed!! :p

Does this look like an announcement to you, or like a launch on Tuesday?

The Apple Store on Regent Street is going to have phones ready for sale on Tuesday. They didn't even want me taking these pictures.

true, but have you seen the other thread with the pics of black curtains in the apple store. They seem to be going the whole way with this. It might just be the day we've been waiting for!

edit: beat me to it!

Hmm...I'm still unsure.

I would really REALLY like to be proven wrong!!!!

I'm reckoning (read: hoping) that the curtains are so that no-one can see the new 'say hello to iPhone' banners that will be going just above the demo iPhones, and also, I'm guessing they have to buy in a new table to put them on, and of course, sort out the confrence bit.

This being said, it could well be a launch, I sure hope not, but as I said earlier, only time will tell. Hot damn I can't wait for Tuesday!

...and I am very much a man :)

just maybe...

I didn't think they would be selling handsets right away, but then I thought... maybe a quick 'soft' launch is a good move from a marketing point of view. Let's face it, every journalist under the sun, including the UK, has written about the iPhone... Everyone knows it and knows it's coming. A date isn't what people want, it's an iPhone in their hand.

Or, maybe they fear the hype has died down by now. If they set up the media for stories about 5 day long queues and they dont materialise, it's not going to go down well in the media.

hmm, we'll see I suppose. I just hope if they do have them for sale that they have enough for me! I'm 2 hours from london, I wonder where that will put me in the queue!

Curiouser and curiouser

I recently read that in the US , the exisiting AT&T customers could upgrade to the iPhone regardless of how long is left on their contracts even allowing the to keep their exisiting plans and then just add-on the unlimited data. I would love to see a move like this by the service operators in europe. Giving existing customers the chance to upgrade their phones whenever they choose can only be profitable for them in the long run and better for us as customers.

On a side note my o2 contract is eligible for an upgrade beginning of December and I'm not sure I can wait til then for my taste of iPhone goodness. Plus my iPod and mobile batteries are both on their last legs and need replacing. The jesus phone could be the answer to my prayers. haha.

Roll on 10 o'clock Tuesday!!

My contact at O2 is doing a good job "keeping mum" despite my pestering, but did let slip that the launch will not include a 3G version.

But I don't care, I've enver used 3G anyway, so its not like I'll be missing anything when I buy mine.

Reading between the lines, I don't think the iphone will be on sale immeadiately after the announcement either.

Well, only 24hrs to go now until we know something!

The excitement for me is palpable and I'm finding it incredibly difficult to concentrate on anything else or stay away from the web in the hope of picking up any more snippets of information.

The pictures posted last night showing the shrouded Regent Street store were a real scoop and have added to the immense anticipation that something really good is going to happen.

How are you all feeling this morning? Anyone actually getting any work done?

Not a drop. I move my eyes from the web to my phone tempting it to be the Apple PR ringing me, with "..oh, and you'll get a free iPhone to review too."

Damn this day!

23 hours 46 minutes to go!

Just posted on The Telegraph's website:

"Speculation has been rife on technology blogs and gadget websites that Apple will use a press conference in London tomorrow to say when its landmark mobile phone - nicknamed the "God phone" - will finally go on sale in the UK. It is believed it could even be on sale immediately."

Nothing new I suppose, but here's hoping!

I doubt the iPhone will be available immediately, however it's not beyond possibility it could be available before the end of the month.

Remember, iPod touch is expected to hit the shelves on the 28th, and that will undoubtedly hit some possible iPhone sales.

Dude, all the secrecy at the Regent Street store wasn't just for a press conference to be some 36 hours later. That store is going to be the iPhone store this week. Watch and see.

I'm pretty sure it will just be displays - not actual sales. It's not just about training Apple store staff - the o2 staff (assuming it's o2) also need some training - and that certainly hasn't started yet.

Selling it immediately simply doesn't make sense on any level - no time to build some hype, do training etc. Even though the novelty isn't quite as high as it was some months ago, you will still get people queuing for it when it does go on sale - it's part of the experience.
