Lot's of ungrateful complainers in here so I figured I would try to be devils advocate for the other side of things:

- The maps app was NEVER updated because it was Google, now it will be all the time because it's Apples

- It's the first version, calm the %#&! down. We've got to start somewhere. That's like ripping Apple for the first iPhone without having the vision to see how great it could become in a few years. Same with Apple maps.

- I LOVE the ability to now say "Siri, find me the closest Trader Joe's market" and I can view all of the nearest locations the map at the same time to figure out which one is the best one to go to! I could never do that before with Google Maps.

- We go from NO turn-by-turn navigation ---> FREE turn-by-turn navigation w/ traffic information. Jesus christ talk about ungrateful

Personally I love the new Apple Maps application, and I have the vision to see it will get better. Those who want to complain can always simply bookmark m.google.com/maps and use the html5 version.

Seriously? Apple replaces something that works well with a pathetic excuse for a replacement and as users we should just say, that's ok, it's the first version, in a year or two it'll be fine. ... Seriously, that's what you're advocating?

Lets look at your points, the maps app was never updated, true, but it worked, was based on a map data set that was incredibly rich and accurate, and used cartography that was clear and easy to read.
It's been replaced by an app that is based on a map data set that for lots of users is not good enough, and uses cartography that whilst prettier (subjectively) is just not as easy to read since it lacks sufficient contrast or colour coding of information.

I recognise that Apple feels the need to cut it's dependence on google, but this was done in a truly craptastic fashion.

It may be the first version, but it's substantially less functional than what it replaces. This would be fine if it was released alongside the old app and you had a choice of which to make the default. even if the new maps was the default and you had to download the old one that would be fine. but no, Apple has replaced something that is essential to most users with something that is half baked and not ready for the prime time, without giving users the option to use the existing application until the new data set is up to par.

Sure the Siri integration is cool, but at the moment in lots of situations, you're as likely to not get the correct information back in your response since there loads of POIs missing. With the older app, sure you had to type in the name of the business you were looking for, but you'd more likely than not get what you were looking for.

As regards turn by turn navigation, i can't get exited about it. I can imagine for some users it's a great feature, but for millions of iphone users who live in major metropolitan areas it's just not a feature you're ever likely to use. and it's inclusion doesn't compensate for all the other faults in the app.

I'm not saying Apple shouldn't make a new maps app, or even that they shouldn't release it, but making it the only alternative for the default map application is a mistake that will downgrade the user experience for millions of users.

"Ungratefu"l? You have the "vision"? Apple isn't a charity, they are a business that is supported by users who choose to give them money in exchange for products and services. And in this case, an existing product was replaced by one that doesn't provide the same services so it is perfectly understandable for someone to be upset.

So your sermoning that the userbase is "ungrateful" is ridiculous. You aren't more enlightened than the rest of us, you're just more obedient when someone tells you to drink the kool-aid.

(BTW. Im not against the new Maps app and I think Siri assisted GPS is fantastic. But considering that it was well known before iOS6 was officially released that Apple Maps is less functional than Google Maps then I feel they shouldve allowed both apps to exist with a choice for a default.)

My OS update was free.

Looks like a downgrade at least in the UK.

Many ipad users too not happy losing the youtube app, means no more full screen youtube...

Safari should support a full-screen mode. The dolphin browser supports full-screen and you can watch YouTube videos fullscreen.

iOS6 Maps are terrible. At first glance they look sexy and clean and they load quickly. The satellite view seems crisper and more detailed.

It's when you start doing local searches... 'no results found'... and for really obvious things. If you do really dumb, simple searches you may get the odd business that happens to have that search phrase in its name.

When you do find something you get 'Yelp' information. I've barely even heard of Yelp. It look like one of those junky virtually dead 90s-style yellow pages clones.

It looks like a crap version of Nokia Maps, which while still not as database-rich as Google, is at least kinda useful.

You still don't have to do it. And for many people, this has been a very good update.

One of Apple's biggest strengths is customer service and product support. I EXPECT decent support from Apple. When they release the update it's expected to be good, but this clearly isn't.

I like everything about the update other than the rubbish maps app.

At least they made an effort to make the main landmarks look nice, for example:

Oh wait, nm

Funny idea of good.

You have a funny idea of 'good upgrade'. iOS offers little difference from iOS 5. In fact the most significant change is the move from Google maps to an Apple's own solution. The Apple maps has questionable map data quality (subjective?) but no local search anymore! search has gone.... go on try it .... look up your local cinema, post office, Aldi store or Fat face store..... all gone!

good upgrade is it? I think not!

What really bothers me is that apple, with their infinite cash and resource could have went to anyone for help on this. They could have just went to Tom Tom and said "hey here is a bunch of money, may we please make a clone of your service for use on our phones?"

We all have every reason to complain. It's not an upgrade, the demo was misleading, and we have no way to continue using the old stock maps app which was better. I know there are alternatives in the App Store. But as many have stated, we bought our devices and they came with a great maps app and now after an "update" we are better off using old school paper maps.

I have read Google is planning to update youtube for the ipad, here's hoping they do the same for maps. There are already decent alternatives to the default maps - including low cost apps that also work offline.

Apple messed up this one I think. Well I'll know tonight when I update.

Which ones work offline?? I remember reading on a thread here about a certain app that works offline that everyone agreed that it was a very good but i cant remember the name of it for the life of me!

"Should" or does :)

On iOS 5 , Safari no longer plays videos from youtube site full screen. It used to.

I've generally found iOS 6 to be fine, with the major exception of Maps, which is absolutely dire. I'm glad the BBC have picked up on this, Apple need bad press if they are going to do anything about it, otherwise they get away with murder lol.
I really hope this sparks Apple into action.

Apple really messed up on this one.
Its bad. Really bad.
Some asshat writer is recommending that Google not release a map app for six months, just to be spiteful.

UPDATE <~~ See that word? Usually updates improve things.

Luton's at the seaside now apparently:

Actually there is a little village called Luton there. The problem is the display level of the label which is visible when you are zoomed out quite far.

My OS update was free.

Your OS update is subsidized by the $650-$850 phone you bought. And even if you bought it for $200-$400 subsidized by your carrier, part of your carrier costs go to Apple to make up the difference. The money Apple makes off the phone pays for the OS. So it wasn't free, it was rolled into your hardware cost.

Point blank , Apple has to fix this or people will leave their product for another. They told you and promised you all this cool stuff was happening but it comes flawed. Imagine ordering a brand new car but the radio is broken. You can live with it but they promised you A NEW CAR. Everything is supposed to be working well. IF it doesn't you take it back and they fix it.. same ****.

So my iMac that came with OSX Snow Leopard, I should really go back to Apple and argue that I should have got Lion and Mountain Lion for free, yes?

You don't have to do it, apart from if you need to reinstall the OS. Then you're screwed. Also, this wouldn't be so bad if Apple allowed people to downgrade the OS.

I might upgrade my 4S if there's a work around to this fiasco but in no way do I want to install IOS6 on my old 3GS. Apple do like to obsolete our stuff with "optional" updates.
