Silly that anyone thought it was going to be 120Hz or mini-LED at this price.

That would push the cost up and over $5000. The XDR display costs that much and doesn't even have speakers or a camera.

It's available in the MacBook Pro because it's a much smaller display. Mini-LED hasn't reached the level where it can be in all Macs yet without ridiculous prices.

at that price it’s not worth the 1500 for a 27 inch rather wait for competition or go full in to pro display xdr

As with all things, it depends on what you value and what you are comfortable to afford.

I have to have Retina so my only two options for an external display before today were a $900 iiyama 5K with roughly zero Mac-friendly features or a $1300 LG UltraFine 5K that was Mac-friendly, but had it's own share of issues.

For $1600, I now have the option of a 5K display from Apple that is 100% Mac friendly, has the best webcam and speakers available on a monitor (period). offers much better build-quality than the iiyama and LG and looks as nice as the Macs I would connect to it.

For me, the Apple Studio Display is a clear winner over the LG or iiyama.

Can Studio Display be used with an Intel Based/Linux PC?
If the Ultrafine 5K is any indication, it will probably work with workarounds if you have a compatible Thunderbolt-equipped PC. It works with all Thunderbolt 3-equipped Macs but only the iPads Pro and just-announced Air. For the LG Ultrafine 5K, I had to install ClickMonitorDDC to adjust the brightness. Sadly, it looks to be abandonware.

Can you get the stand and Vesa mount?

I doubt it. Looks to be an "either / or" situation like with the most recent iMac 5Ks.

The iMac (24") can swap between VESA and stand via a back panel swap, so that might be an option with the Apple Studio Display.

Not directly from the Apple website, but I think Apple sells a VESA mount for the iMac line (for those who change their minds later) so maybe you can order one from the store.

Everyone wants a 40-inch 8K-resolution mini-LED monitor that sells for under $500. And a free pony.

I'm pretty let down by the studio display. The Studio CPU seems like a very capable professional tool given the performance capabilities, so the display doesn't quite match up to me since it seems more like a lower level consumer product instead of a mid tier item as reflected by the price.

- I was hoping for something more than a standard IPS 600 nit display. They didn't mention anything about MiniLED or pro motion, which makes it strange to have them market to colorists and photographers who would have a less capable screen compared to a MacBook Pro.

- The focus on audio capabilities is also kind of strange since anyone even slightly interested in production would use external speakers no matter how relatively good the monitor audio is.

-As for the price tag, it seems like you're getting the similar to a 5K iMac display with upgraded audio and webcam while shaving off an entire Mac computer for only $100 off what a base model 27" imac was.

At 4K with no webcam (much less a 12MP one) and no speakers and optimized for video games, not professional production work.

Mind you, I have the Alienware on order, but it's going to be my gaming monitor on my Alienware gaming PC.

I will still use my iMac 5K for my work.

How do you have the AW3423DW on order considering Dell/Alienware has not put it up for pre-order or anything yet? Eagerly awaiting that monitor myself. Going to be my new gaming monitor.

I fully agree that you can't really compare the Apple Studio monitor with it. The AW3423DW is going to be awesome, no doubt about it. But it will probably have rather lacklustre calibration out of the box, it has lower resolution and does not come with any of the other built in features, no built in A13 SoC for computational ISP for the camera etc. It won't provide your connected MacBook/iPad with power etc.

Pros: 27" 5K (IMO a perfect size / resolution balance), P3, six-speaker sound system (!!), great camera and microphones, gorgeous aluminum/glass design

Cons: no mini-LED, no ProMotion, $$$$, and I'm kind of surprised that they didn't leverage the A13 to give it some really amazing, only-Apple's-integration-can-let-us-do-this type feature. Something like letting the display be a standalone wireless AirPlay viewer (without a Mac connected), or letting it be used as a Universal Control screen by itself. That would've been neat.

If you’re a high end photographer or video editor this could be great. But when I was a professional video editor I would have wanted 2 of these. I’m a software developer now and I can’t fathom a reason I need this.

I was willing to sacrifice a smaller 27" form factor for something in the $2000 price range which exists right now with MiniLED if it meant having Mac integration. This seems to echo the rumors that they weren't able to get the MiniLED tech in line for launch and went with the previous gen IPS.

That's nuts.

Basically, this monitor starts at $1,999. Nobody buys a non-height adjustable monitor these days.
Is there any competition, though? I wish it was a market that would've forced Apple's hand to have a competitive price, but I don't think there's anything else this polished and well-rounded available.

The VESA mount is the better alternative. It is more flexible, plus you can get a decent one for $40 that works just fine.

To be fair the Studio Display is a great upgrade to the Thunderbolt Display and I would have bought one ... if I didn't own the Pro XDR + miniM1.

Apple have been very slow to market here. The LG Ultrafine 5K (which the Studio Monitor of course is) has been around for sometime. I'm still struggling with tonight's event ... iPhoneSE -> M1Ultra 8K content creators?

Umm ... ok.

It's the iMac 5K display without the computer portion. And the iMac 5K is used daily by a fair number of professionals in all fields of work.

Yes, it would be wonderful if it had MiniLED and ProMotion (said to be coming with the iMac Pro in 2023*), but that would have likely added another $500-1000 to the price and people would really be screaming about the price. ;)

And even at $2500, it would have knocked the legs out from under the current Pro Display XDR.

* - And I expect that iMac Pro to be like the old Intel model with a $4000-5000 base price tag considering what the Mac Studio and Apple Studio Display cost.
