This is essentially the exact display I desperately wanted back in 2019 when I was upgrading from the Thunderbolt Display: essentially a 5K iMac without the iMac. I didn't want to get an actual iMac because I wanted to keep using a MacBook as my main computer. I settled on the LG 5K because it was the iMac's panel (with macOS integration as a bonus), just in an uglier enclosure. While I appreciate that this thing has a slightly higher peak brightness, a clearer camera with ISP, and an improved speaker system, it's essentially 2+ years too late for me.

120Hz would've made it something truly unique, even if it would've added a few hundred to the price tag.

Is there any competition, though? I wish it was a market that would've forced Apple's hand to have a competitive price, but I don't think there's anything else this polished and well-rounded available.

It almost feels like LG agreed to sell all their panels to Apple exclusively instead of marketing their own 27/5K product.

Do anybody know if the height adjustable stand allows portrait mode? They only mentioned it for the VESA mount, but it would be very disappointing that the 400$ optional height-adjustable stand can't rotate like the stand on the Pro Display XDR

It will be interesting to see if LG pulls the plug on the UltraFine 5K like they did the 21.5" UltraFine 4K in the year or so before Apple killed the 21.5" iMac 4K in favor of the 24" iMac.

This fits in our home perfectly with our m1 air and new MacBook Pro set up... Looks like I have a few older displays to sell.

If it did, I think they would have mentioned it.

That being said, the Pro Display XDR does support portrait orientation and the ASD's stand looks quite similar.

Yeah, that's why I was confused. Not the exact same stand, but it looks similar. It would be a bummer to not have this feature

Apple is still selling the LG UltraFine 5K (my guess is that they are just selling out remaining stock as you have to search for it).

That said, LG may wind up selling more of these now that they are Apple-branded. 5K just never caught on in the PC world. The market stalled at 4K, and it appears the next leap will be to 8K, which seems like overkill except for very large displays (and possibly VR/AR).

The tech specs mention it only for the VESA mount. That's likely a better option for most people, since it costs less, offers more flexibility, and inexpensive but functional VESA mounts are plentiful.

Are the Apple displays and the LG Ultrafine the only displays that support F1/F2 brightness adjustments via the keyboard? I'm constantly fiddling with the brightness.

This looks....nice, but doesn't feel like the Apple level entry point. I suspect Gen 2/ ProMotion with the upgrades will make a lot of regret jumping on this now.
So in other words, Gen 2 is almost certainly coming?

(Only people that visit the Mac mini forum will get that.)

Is it Apple’s impressive track record of frequent and rapid launches of new external monitors with brand new features that convince you that Gen 2 is imminent enough that a lot of people will regret jumping on this?

$1599 is VERY high considering Samsung and Dell is planning to sell QD-OLED panel with >30" in size for around $1300
At 4K with no webcam (much less a 12MP one) and no speakers and optimized for video games, not professional production work.

Mind you, I have the Alienware on order, but it's going to be my gaming monitor on my Alienware gaming PC.

I will still use my iMac 5K for my work.

I think you're mistaken about that Alienware OLED. I was excited about it too, until I found out that it's only 1440p, not 4K.

Yeah, 3440 x 1440 resolution. Which is still fine by me since my current ASUS ROG 27" gaming monitor is 2560x1440.

That being said, makes the Apple Studio Monitor that much more impressive in some specs over the AW3423DW for non-gaming purposes.

I wish opting for a VESA mount with the new display was actually cheaper than the price with the stand. Many monitor arms already allow portrait orientation so a cheaper no-thrills VESA mount adapter would have been good to see available, too.

This display feels out of date before it has even launched. A 60Hz, non-HDR, IPS LED, non-HDMI 2.1, edge-lit monitor for $1600? Yikes. And with how often Apple updates their displays, this monitor is not likely to age well.

Who is this for exactly? A video editor is going to want HDR and local dimming. Maybe a photographer? A casual user isn't spending $1600. Seems like it occupies this weird middle space between an everyday user and professional. Not sure there is a market in that space.
