Scuba diving. My heart skipped when I read this. But then I read the small print and look at the detailed spec. Let’s start with “Water resistance is not a permanent condition and can diminish over time”. You’ve gotta be kidding. A dive computer can mean the difference between life and death. It really needs to be reliable. And no air integration? And those fiddly buttons and small digits that underwater will be even more difficult to read. Nice idea. But no thanks. I’ll stick to a proper dive computer.

Doesn't look that good but if it does everything they claim I think it will make a lot of people happy.

49mm case ... does Apple measure width (diameter) or length (lug-to-lug) here? Because 49mm diameter sounds massive. In this rounded square shape it would probably be quite a bit larger than even the chunkiest of G-Shocks?

Used as a dimension for lug-to-lug it would be fine I guess. 50 - 55mm is pretty standard in the traditional watch space at least.

The water resistance statement is a CYA clause.

Does it have ANT+? How can one connect it to a boat, bike, pro hr band, cadence sensor, powermeter, and so on?

Doesn’t look like a gadget for athletes and explorers to me.

A proper diver computer doesn’t have a CYA clause when it comes to water resistance. The device either can or cannot be relied upon at depth. Period. If not then it doesn’t come diving with me. I always dive with spares of all critical safety equipment in case of failure. My dive computer is such a piece of equipment. I would not dive knowing that one of my two units is not to be relied upon - effectively a fail before I’ve even started. IMHO Apple should not have gone there. Scuba kit needs professional servicing by certificated technicians. Never gonna get those guarantees from a Genius Bar and my local scuba centre won’t be able to service an Apple Watch, so it’s neither one thing or the other.

If I purchase this new fancy expensive version will it allow me to record a GPS track during snow activities. Such as XC ski. Cuz uh, that would be a nice new feature.

My Casio G-Shock has 2 years battery life.

These guys really dislike cyclists dont they. Never see any integration for power meters which would be a super nice additon. Its not really a 'rugged; watch for 'extreme sports' lol.. its to help bankers who already have an apple watch on one wrist and an Audemars Piquet on the other..
I think you misspelled wankers.

I just checked the specs and quite disappointingly still no ANT+, mind boggling for a device intended for heavy activities

This is a niche product for niche group of users. I'm not certain the R&D and sales will warrant this specific product as worth the effort.

I DO see like already mentioned of a sensor or bands possibly being compatible that this will combine with the typical series models.

I'm kinda shocked that this wasn't an Apple Nike+ Adventure or Rugged named watch.

Ugly, needlessly expensive but I think this product will phase out and it's core benefits and pillars will trickle into the normal lineup.

Apple lawyers will always include it, regardless of the watch's capabilities over time. Understand your concerns and I definitely wouldn't trust it after servicing. I just think you're reading too much into that statement.

Yes, you commonly get the same clause for e.g. diver watches too. Water resistance has to be verified for cases where your life depends on it. The seals do age over time.

So ugly! So expensive!

The watch needs LESS buttons not more. ew.. This is not Steve Job's Apple, that's for sure

I don’t know if I agree with you. I would think it’s more accurate to say this is not Jony Ive’s Apple Watch.

Given a few more generations and improvements in the technology, I think we could see an Apple Watch with less buttons, greater battery life, etc.

However I think while Steve liked to push boundaries, he was also pragmatic.

If there was a need for a second button, there would be a second button.

Personally, I like the design, but I’m curious if the screen is sapphire crystal or gorilla glass. My guess is gorilla glass, but I hope I’m wrong.

True but if I'm only getting one Apple Watch, I really wouldn't want to wear this one all day. If this has to be a secondary watch, it makes the purchase harder to justify for many people.
Speak for yourself. My wrists are 8.5” and this would work perfectly as an everyday watch for me.
