And do you remember when, in landscape view, there used to be an extended keyboard with useful keys on the alpha face, such as period, comma, undo and redo arrows, forward and back arrows for quick correctios? Yeah. Apple thought eliminating those keys was progress. Look at all the empty space in landscape view now. Brilliant. So, along with numbers at the top of the alpha face, I want those keys. I wish Apple cared less about emoji and more about function.

Don't really care about most of the updates (except CarPlay and HomePod), what I really want is for apple to bring back the playlist functionality back to the podcast app. I have a smart playlist on my computer which play's the oldest unplayed podcast (of all I have subscribed to) and then goes on to the next. Because Apple removed this functionality from iOS I still have and use my classic (wheel) iPod. Perhaps I'm the only one who misses this, but after every update I look for it and I'm always disappointed. This keeps me from using the podcast app on my phone (and in CarPlay) and is a major disappointment.

Has it been announced which phones will not be eligible for this upgrade? I’m holding on to my iPhone 6s + until it no longer works, and I’d like to use dark mode if possible.
iPhone 6s/6s plus and later models (including the SE).

Apparently Apple's criteria for allowing software updates is a combination of CPU + RAM. This year they clearly discontinued updates for all devices with both an A8 chip or older AND 1 GB or less in RAM. This included the 6th gen iPod touch, iPhone 5s, 6/6 Plus, iPad Air 1st gen and iPad mini 2 and 3. That way, only iPhones with an A9 or later processor, as well as all iPads with 2 GB or more in RAM (which includes the mini 4 and Air 2, both of which still have an A8 processor chip) are the only devices still getting software updates this year from September onwards.

Would be nice if Apple would provide more RAM for their phones. I use multiple apps for work and one always ends up crashing if I try to browse the internet during my down time. They should have had 4GB of RAM since the iPhone 6.

Unfortunately, there are already plethora of defenders claiming iOS is “well optimised” to a point that large amount of RAM is “not needed” and such narrative has been around like that over the past three years until now. I wonder why they did not realise web browsing eats away available RAM super fast back in 2013.
Another thing I think could be a main reason why more RAM is not included is Apple put RAM inside their A processor, taking up already precious space. Only with lower nm number would Apple put more RAM inside A processor.

I find it silly that people would defend Apple for giving us “just enough” rather than giving us the best product they could. It would be nice if we could go back to the days where companies built things to last.

Apple realized that web browsing takes a bunch of RAM, the problem is if they offered sufficient amounts of it, it would make it that much harder for them to sell the following years phone.

Every time there's an iOS update, I hope for being able to change my default apps. No such luck this time.

Apple today previewed iOS 13, which will introduce a new Dark Mode to iOS devices and several performance improvements across the board, including faster Face ID, slimmer downloads and updates, and quicker app launches.

Dark Mode has been implemented across the iPhone and iPad operating system and its native apps, including the appearance of notifications, widgets, calendar, and notes. Dark Mode is also available to third-party app developers for integration into their own apps, and can be scheduled to turn on automatically at sunset or at a certain time.

Apple has also added a swipe to type feature to the stock iOS keyboard called QuickPath, which brings easy one-hand typing to the iOS keyboard by continuously swiping through the letters of a word, and Memoji are automatically made into sticker packs built into the iOS keyboard, so they can be used in Messages, Mail and other apps.

iOS 13 will also bring new sharing suggestions for Messages - users can automatically share a user's name and photo, or customized Memoji or Animoji, to easily identify who is in the Messages thread.

A new sign-in feature allows users to log in to third-party apps with their Apple ID, Notes has a new Gallery View, more powerful collaboration with shared folders, new search tools and checklist options, and time-synced lyrics are coming to the Music app.

Elsewhere, Siri has a new, more natural voice, and Siri Shortcuts now supports Suggested Automations that provide personalized routines for things like heading to work or going to the gym. And with AirPods, Siri can read incoming messages as soon as they arrive, from Messages or any SiriKit-enabled messaging app.

In addition, the Files app is gaining the ability to share folders with iCloud Drive and access files from external storage devices like SD cards and USB flash drives, while new Location Services options include a new one-time location option and more information on when apps are using location in the background.

On the performance front, Face ID is now 30 percent, downloads are 50 percent smaller, updates are 60 percent smaller, and app launches are twice as fast as iOS 12.

iOS 13 will also bring an easier Photos app browsing interface and new editing tools, a revamped Reminders app, and enhanced Apple Maps features.
Developer betas of iOS 13 are already available, while the final public version will be released this fall.

For 15 years my family has been iPhone and iPad and Mac exclusive. We have just made the decision - despite the cost and all the lightening wire and iPod investments around the house to switch to Android. The key decider was the lack of support for Progressive Web Apps which are clearly the future. I remember when Apple was cutting edge. Now it’s just behaving like blockbuster preserving its income against Netflix. Everybody getting all excited here about “dark mode”. That’s been standard on all other systems for years. Back to windows and Samsung for us. Where my kindle app can actually buy a book without the App Store tax. What a shame. Get on PWAs or get obsolete Apple
