For months, I was debating whether to get an iPhone 7/7+, iPhone SE, Samsung Galaxy Note/S7 edge, and LG V20. I also throw in Xiaomi Mi 5, Redmi 3s Prime, and a Sony PlayStation 4 slim. I was basically going back and forth between iPhones, Note7, and V20. I literally had dozens of review videos I put on loop. The dilemma made my head spin since they all had their strengths and weaknesses.

Then I asked myself, why do I need another phone when I rotate between 3-4 phones anyway? Add another thanks to a free hand me down Galaxy Note 3 that might be a 3-year old model but is technically 18 months. So by picking the MBA in its final form factor is arguably the best buying decision I ever made this year. I wasn't going to wait another week and got it at its cheapest brand new.

I wasn't going to wait that extra week for that V20 that gets released to AT&T today. Smartphones are overpriced anyway and lose value faster than Macs. I will eventually pick up a PS4 but instead might get the Pro over the slim and by next year. That Red Dead Redemption 2 trailer has got me really excited but it can wait. The PS4 would have been my 2nd choice had I not got the MBA but I knew MBA is superior because it has a torrent program and has its own screen. It is also mobile in case I experience a blackout which happens alot where I live.

Another one of those reassurance posts (sorry) but what can I say? My intuition is generally correct. Now I am loving my 2015 "13 MBA thanks to Transmission downloading hundreds of movies and TV shows which is something iPhones can't do out of the box. And I can't transfer my smartphones into the Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB, so what's the use for another smartphone?

I studied MacBook Air for months before making the right decision because I knew Apple was going to screw people over with this announcement and they did. Glad watching several review videos on YouTube paid off for me. I post a little less now on GSM Arena and anything smartphone-related because what is really in my mind is what movies to download and my anticipation getting a PS4. I can rotate between 4-5 phones that can last me into the next decade just like this MBA would.

RIP to David Bowie, Prince, Muhammad Ali, Galaxy Note7, Nexus branding, and MacBook Air...

So instead of bringing out a new MacBook Air, Apple sends Schiller on stage to insult people's intelligence by saying the new entry level MacBook Pro is faster then the MacBook Air in every way. Of course it is faster, the internals have Intel's 6th generation hardware and an updated SSD. Also, I think the only reason the 13' MBA is still around is because of it's 12+ hours of battery life. Which brings up another matter. After all of these years and billions being spent on company R&D, Apple still cannot produce a 13' MBA with Retina that has 12+ hours of battery life.

The Verge reviewer writes that the new butterfly keyboard is "almost identical" to the one in the Macbook.

I think I'll get another 2015 MBP as a backup, so I'm covered for the next few years. After that, unless Apple changes course, I'm probably done with the Mac. :(

This.
I can understand not including the fancy OLED bar, but removing 2 ports just because is a bit lame. There's no space restriction here, and the fact that this still bears a "Pro" branding.
Ditching SD card slot, HDMI port, etc for 4 USB-C ports is kinda okay, but ditching all that only for 2 USB-C port? On a Pro notebook? Come on Apple.
It's probably because Apple needs to include a second controller to power the additional 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports. Plus, it creates an upsell for the $1799 model (faster processor, Touch Bar, more ports).

Anyway, it still allows full-speed charging and connecting to a hub at the same time (which the 12" MacBook does not). Since Thunderbolt 3 is so powerful, two ports with a hub is all most people would need to stay plugged in.

The 13" entry level model appears to have a lower power 15W CPU - the Iris 540 in this model is for lower power CPUs -- this contrasts with the Iris 550 in the 13" touch bar model which is almost identical to the 540 *except* that it has a slightly higher turbo clock and *only* comes with higher power 28W CPUs.

The 13" entry level / no touch bar model also has significantly higher battery capacity according to Apple's tech spec page - 54.5-watt-hour vs 49.2-watt-hour is a >10% battery capacity boost.

My question is, given the two technical differences above, how on earth are both models rated for similar battery life? All signs point to the 13" entry level / no touch bar model having significantly longer battery life here right?

EDIT: It looks like the exact CPUs offered here for the 13" entry level and 13" touch bar respectively are the i5-6267U (15W) and the i5-6360U (28W).

Yeah I wondered this too, it doesn't make any sense for it to be the same screen, larger battery, lower consumption CPU/GPU but the same battery life as the touchbar/4 port version...

Think I will hold off on ordering until I know the difference between the two in terms of processing power, GPU performance, and battery life. It's going to be better than my 2010 maxed out MBA anyway! Shame there is no 2TB option on any of the 13" models though.

I can deal with the 2 ports and am not bothered about the touch ID/touchbar stuff, it's a shame the RAM, GPU and CPU are slower, if the battery lasted longer that would be a big bonus!

I have no idea what this model does it Apples repetoire. What purpose does it serve? It is not a cheaper computer, as both the MBA and '15 MBP are cheaper. Its not to provide function keys, again the models just mentioned. Its not to be a cheap pro, because it is not cheap in any way.

They should have named it the Macbook Performa.

Apples product lines are just completely ****ed up, 90ties style now.

The only reason to include this model is to sell to enterprise bean counters who want pro models but won't use it themselves.

I think any professional/small business owner spending his/her own money on a new machine that they personally will use would cough up the extra $300 to buy the 13" with TouchBar and TouchID, better processor and more ports.. Price conscious education buyers will stick with the 13" MacBook Air which get discounted down to $800 at Best Buy and other places all the time.

I don't think this model will be a big seller in the consumer market.

This is absolute crap!!!!

Apple removes the 3.5mm jack from the iPhone 7 forcing the use of wireless or the Lightning port connected headphones (or the use of some stupid Lighting to 3.5mm converter).

So now consumers drink the Apple Kook-Aid go out and purchase Lighting connected headphones and the arrogant Apple clowns release the new MacBook WITH a 3.5mm audio jack and NO Lighting connector.

When asked about removing the 3.5mm jack, Phil Schiller has been quoted saying “the company can't justify the continued use of an 'ancient' single-use port”, and it took “courage” to abandon the 3.5mm jack.

Greg Joswiak has been quoted saying “The audio connector is more than 100 years old. It had its last big innovation about 50 years ago. You know that what was? They made it smaller. It hasn’t been touched since then. It’s a dinosaur. It’s time to move on”

Isn’t this lovely, Apple just finished telling everyone that the 3.5mm jack is a horrible, outdated, dinosaur technology and we all should run out and purchase wireless or Lighting connected headphones.

Thanks for the inconsistency Apple, or are you now going to say it took “courage” to leave the 3.5mm jack in the MacBook and you left out the Lighting port because that’s the next port on the chopping block.

THIS would not have happened when his Stevness was still alive, such a stupid inconsistency. My MBA is now close to years old and is sometimes acting up so I am going to order a new 13' MBA- but the overall line up is dissapionting. Would have loved to see a MBA retina or a MB with better specs. Well, a least the Pro is now almost as light as the MBA.

I just bought a new external hard drive days before buying my first Mac. Hate using dongles. Apple also eliminated SD slot and uses that butterfly keyboard where I prefer the longer travel.! It also seems like Sierra is more power hungry than El Capitan. But the final nail is Apple wanting so much for it. And yes, I love MagSafe. So cool. Eliminate ports but raise the prices.

This is what I learned. Don't be a fanatic to any of these brands. Samsung messed up with the Note7. Apple eliminated the headphone jack on iPhone 7 and many more on Macs. LG had their bootloop issues and took so long to release the V20 with its anemic battery. You can love their products but never, ever trust them to deliver 100% of the time. This is one of those years where each of them made us NOT totally fall in love with their upgrade announcements because of some glaring flaw or omission.

Like the election. Can I really trust Hillary or Donald? Oh, hell no. Never trust a brand that much either with all their divisive decisions and useless gimmicks. The only thing they care about is our money to fatten their pockets. Apple, Samsung, Microsoft, LG, Sony, and so forth and even some religions are all part of that same game plan.

Phil the "Shill" Shiiler is right when he said "can't innovate my ass". These MacBook Pro updates are are just overpriced smoke and mirrors act. TC it's time to take Apple off autopilot and give us some shock and awe. You're putting us to sleep.

Exactly why I purchased my new 13" MBP this past June and didn't wait for this "upgrade".....saw the writing on the wall. I totally agree that removing all of the ports that Apple did was really going backwards.

I sure hope they don't screw up whatever forthcoming Apple display (that I sorely need) they may be working on in the meantime.

It will be interesting to see if the market can bear these higher prices, we won't find out probably for 12 months though as there is bound to be enough pent up demand who will buy it anyway in the first 6 months at least. If it does work out credit to Apple

Apple's senior VP Phil Schiller says the new entry-level MacBook Pro is faster than the MacBook Air in "every way." It has a 2.0GHz Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB RAM, a 256GB SSD, Intel Iris 540 Graphics, a larger Force Touch trackpad, two Thunderbolt 3 ports, and a new second-generation butterfly mechanism keyboard.

Wow, thats amazing. All of that any only 50% greater price.

That will fly out the door

I have a late 2013 13' MBP and I was thinking of upgrading. Not anymore. Ugh they're messing with the MBP line up. Was it really necessary to remove all of these ports? What's so pro about this? And $1499 for the entry? Hahaha
Apple you never cease to disappoint me. I guess the only apple product I'll be using is the iPhone once my MBP dies.

four usb c ports are pretty powerful, what are you missing?

They said a lot about the function keys, as if they were terrible and old, but a couple minutes later announced a MacBook which has them. What is happening to this company?
Not too dissimilar from the headphone jack. We get the infamous comment about courage and moving on, and then they keep the port on their "cutting-edge" not even shipping yet MacBooks. (Not a bad thing, but still, similar issue.)
