Am I the only one that caught the line in their release that basically says iOS 18.1 is only going to be available for iPads that run A17 Pro or M1+? If that's the case it seems they are cutting off quite a few iPad models with 18.1, previously it was just the Apple Intelligence features themselves which required M1 or later:

"The first set of Apple Intelligence features will be available in U.S. English this month through a free software update with iPadOS 18.1, and available for iPad with A17 Pro or M1 and later."

Reading comprehension failure, they mean Apple Intelligence, not iPadOS 18.1, the limitation is inline with the iPhone and Mac product lines, where only A17 and M1 models and up will get it.

No details about the UBC-C Port. Speed? A17 Pro supports USB 3 speeds.... and how about display-out resolution? G6 was handicapped. Specs don't say.

But the A15 chip in the Gen 6 Mini was binned. As in slightly crippled.
Same for current mini. It's using 5 core GPU vs the 6 core in full A17 Pro (iPhone 15 Pro). I skipped the Air this year and was looking for mini, because I never owned one. It seems I'm waiting for next year Air with M3/4.

Kinda interesting that it’s listed as iPad mini (A17 Pro) instead of iPad mini 7 or 7th generation. Though M-series Airs and Pros are named similarly.

What an absolute nothing burger of an update

3 years of waiting … to get that?

This company is just so dead to me
There are clearly certain products Apple cares about, and certain products it doesn't. The iPad mini has long been one it doesn't really care about, especially when one thinks about how long the wait between the mini 5 and mini 6 was.

Wife has an iPad mini 4 purchased in 2015 she'd like to replace, but didn't want to deal w/jelly scroll. I hope once the reviews come out the jelly scroll was dealt with!

No 120 Hz
One-year-old processor: A17... not the latest A18...
Starting at 128GB of storage: Apple is what? 6/7 years late with this "upgrade"?
Not sure if it has 8GB RAM or more... and Wi-Fi 6? (typo?)
at $499... no thank you. You sell us a product with old technology, I pay you $250. Otherwise you can keep it.

I would have lost a hefty bet that Apple would keep A17 around in this fashion.

Figured they would have left that node in the past with how quickly they moved to A18/M4

I'm surprised, but I imagine it means the iPad mini is low-volume enough that they don't mind using remaining SoCs from the iPhone 15 Pro production run.

Wonder if M4 Macs are going to be announced later this week or soon via press release. These minor updates are ridiculous. Apple needs to extend hardware updates and focus resources on minimizing software bugs and improving software performance, and its other services.
I would love to have a iPad Mini for its size but can’t justify $600.00 for 256GB of memory. For that price it should include a M4 chip and a 120 Hz OLED screen.

Happy to see the end of the 64GB baseline.

I’ve got an iPod mini 6 with 256 GB — totally happy with it, but it’s nice to know that its successor is $100 cheaper thanks to the change in SSD size.

[Edit] Oh, sorry, I guess I was supposed to grind my teeth and curse the sky. Oh Apple why didn’t you give me the moon on a stick, you greedy bustards?
