Fully customized silicone, no more spinning disk or optical drive (for years), yet they couldn’t update the design 10 years later?
Is there a need to make it different? You're asking for change for change sake.

I'm sure those with accessories they'll be able to continue using with the new Mac mini will be happy. I don't see any need for change and have had numerous Mac minis throughout the years. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

You have no idea whether that is a downgrade. This is a complete different chip architecture. No iPad has more than 6 GB RAM.
Fine. How is one to make a buying decision? Current Macs use every GB of RAM that is thrown at them. Today I consider 32 GB to be the minimum for a multitasking workload. How is one supposed to just believe that 16 GB of unified memory is enough? iPad is not a basis for comparison at all.

The Mini's maximum RAM configuration used to be 64GB but now it's only 16GB - quite a downgrade, and that's the problem with putting everything on the SOC. (Same with MacBook Pro - that's not going to fly for a lot of power users.)
The ‘traditional’ way of thought has been more and more RAM for best performance, however, that old way of thought may have now changed. Perhaps in the future (from now on) the sign of max performance capability will be how little RAM is needed.

well I got an i7 model about a month ago. So far I’m not really THAT impressed with the M1 Mini.

interestingly they didn’t lower the price of the 2018 that’s still using 8th gen Intel chip.

Just looking at the UK store where they have the two new M1 models, but still keeping the Intel machine on sale, which is more expensive:

Up to 16 GB of RAM. You got to be kidding me... current generation supports up to 64 GB RAM. Good bye scientific computing with these custom chips that include (ridiculously low amounts of) RAM.

Even though if history repeats itself, these M1 models will be completely and totally blown away by what follows it. I don't know what that might be unless Apple gets into the VR market and the M1 chip just wont cut it for that. But if you know this going in and are willing to upgrade once you find out you can't do any of the fancy new stuff 2 years later, then I would say this isn't bad if you plan on not doing anything professional with it. If the OS dosnt slow down after years of upgrades for what I do at home with a computer this is pretty good. Would I expect so little of a Windows PC at this price point? Not on your life.

I want to see what M1 can do with its unified 16Gb RAM . This is the biggest concern I have right now as the RAM will not be upgradable . For large music projects with VI, RAM is critical.
