THE NOTCH, AGAIN !!!!

OMG, please stop making ugly products !!!

Such an ugly piece of hardware.

Face ID must be the worst tech to come in a decade.

Apple is just disappointing customers... notch everywhere, removing and again putting back old ports, thicker and heavier laptops... still no underscreen fingerprint in iPhone...
Maybe we need to wait another decade to have a gadget fulfilling what we want and meanwhile competitors have already all we want !!
Agreed. I’m annoyed enough that my iPhone can’t have words removed from the swype dictionary for input, and that android devices have timed/delayed sending of text messages and iPhone/iPad don’t.

The notch won’t be in the way when watching movies in fullscreen or opening apps in full screen because fullscreen mode only opens right up to the edge of the notch.
Which sort of defeats the point of the notch to begin with. If you can’t use all of the screen much of the time because of the notch, making the step described above necessary, what good is it?

I know you were joking, but the truth is that we, as a modern western society, have grown increasingly more comfortable and less resilient. The idea of "lugging around" an extra pound seems like a con in terms of performance. Last time we had a thinner, lighter design, the architecture was riddled with overheating issues due to poor thermal management.
I thought that was one of the primary benefits of the M1-series CPUs (thermals were so much better no extensive cooling was required)?
Let's dispel this one. In full screen mode, only the 16:10 area below the notch is in use. Your movie content, if it were to stretch to the top of that area, would not be affected by the notch at all. And of course watching a movie in a window could not be affected because you can't move a window into the notch vertical space.

Aside from looks, really the only negative of the notch is that it will take away some horizontal space of the menu bar. I feel that is an issue that is way overblown. Yes, some apps will be affected. Yes, application developers may relocate some menu items to accommodate. Maybe there's even a Monterey option to move the menu bar back down below the notch for those who really can't stand it.
The notch buying back only enough space, and only ever used for, menus (and awkwardly at that), while being empty/black in fullscreen usage makes it pretty annoying and pointless.

I guess they wanted to make a call between having a fatter top bezel - which you see all the time - or an intrusion into the menu bar which would be a downside only when you use full screen apps.

Apple today announced its long-awaited major redesign for the MacBook Pro, featuring configurations with the M1 Pro and M1 Max chip, a mini-LED display with ProMotion, an HDMI port and SDXC card reader, charging with MagSafe 3, a notch housing a 1080p webcam, and more.

The new MacBook Pro also features improved studio-quality mics and speakers that support Spatial Audio, with the 16-inch model containing a six-speaker system.

The MacBook Pro now features magnetic charging with MagSafe 3, which gives the device fast charging for up to 50 percent charge in 30 minutes. It remains possible to charge using the Thunderbolt ports. When playing back video, the 14.2-inch model offers up to 17 hours of battery life, while the 16.2-inch model can deliver up to 21 hours of video playback.

The redesigned MacBook Pro features configurations with two new Apple silicon chips. Apple's The M1 Pro chip is a scaled-up, more powerful variant of the M1 chip. The M1 Pro chip features an 8-core or 10-core CPU, 16-core GPU, a more capable Media Engine, more Thunderbolt controllers, support for up to 32GB of unified memory, and more. The M1 Max chip features the same 10-core CPU as the M1 Pro, but includes a 24-core or 32-core GPU with support for up to 64GB of unified memory.

The new MacBook Pro is available to pre-order today, with the first orders arriving to customers next week.

on paper the performances are incredible.
Design looks a bit odd, with a nice sharp edge (iMac and iPad Pro design language) and a rounded bottom edges... reminds me the Withings Scale

why ports are more important than incredible performance by new chips?

I think it's mostly because the expectations from the leaks often don't match what you get from the real thing.

That would be a rumour then. A leak is the passing on of actual information to the outside world hence would set expectations straight.

No because VGA nowadays is rare and is being phased out. HDMI, however, is present on all new projectors and TVs. HDMI is a current standard that is not being phased out, and therefore, is being actively used. If you give a presentation anywhere, you will almost certainly need HDMI.
That is not the point. People's argument is you look "extremely unprofessional" or "feel extremely embarrassed" when you need to use a dongle. But as a true professional, you need to be prepared for any scenario. And the work places I visited two years ago, VGA was quite common at several companies. Also, some companies do not have wireless and I needed to use ethernet. But I am prepared for any of these.

This is like a computer repair shop not having the right screws or screwdrivers. You need to be prepared.

I don't find it either but of course our mileage varies. You may have to get used to it for a while because I only see the notch area expanding in functionality, like getting FaceID, and it will be there until Apple can figure out way to keep a small bezel and camera(s) together. I fear the thickness of the components doesn't play well with the thinness of the screen housing so they had to go vertical in this instance. But what's done is done.

So this is basically a high end CPU with a 2070 Super level GPU - Ray Tracing.

This is cool and all, but for the money, is it really better than an OLED based PC running a 3080?

I was going to look at upgrading my 13” M1, but trade in value stinks and I’m not sure this is worth the $1400 price difference to get near the top end.

My critique about yesterday's MBPro-14/16 release:

6. Windows will *not* run on Apple Silicon; therefore, Macs are devalued for those of us who paid the premium for one computer to be able to run both macOS *and* Windows.

ARM Windows runs just fine under Parallels. You can argue that Microsoft might break it in the future (but that's dangerously close to FUD), but saying that it doesn't work is incorrect.

7. Apple should return replaceable RAM/SSD/battery, for Right To Repair, while it returns ports.

The entire point of having the RAM be part of the SOC is the increase in performance and unification of the memory that you get from the architecture. This necessitates the RAM being part of the package, which means it's not going to be user replaceable.

You want socketed RAM? You lose a huge chunk of the performance benefit. I'm certainly willing to make that tradeoff.

I'd almost agree, but look at the "leaks" of the Apple Watch 7--the final design was nowhere near what was expected by the leaks.

If it’s not the final product it’s something else or a fake, in my opinion. A leak is disclosing of what’s about to come out.

Anyway, expectations should always be kept on the ground on a rumour site.

Heavy?
3.5-4.7 lbs is “heavy”

“do you even lift bro?” Lol. All joking aside did everyone forgot what their knapsacks weight while going to college or university? Heck even my high school books were more than twice this 5-days a week and didn’t include wrestling boots or soccer cleats tracksuit adding a few grams.

I’m not even big or have big arms or strong hands and not since 1993 have I complained about the weight of a laptop. Just boggles my mind.
Sorry. I meant "thick and heavy" in the appearance/design of the base of the laptop. I do lift, FWIW :) But I spoke too soon, people have been commenting on how chunky it looks since I made that comment. Dont get me wrong. Im a big fan of this new macbook, only a minor quibble over how "thick" it looks. The notch seems negligible to me.

Overall, I love the MacBook Pro.

The design reminds me a lot of the titanium PowerBook, it has many details that remind me of it, like the straight shape, but curving at the bottom, or the layout of the keyboard, speakers and trackpad.

The reduction of bezels is not dramatic (I expected something more in that sense, having notch), but considerable, and well, the notch is not something that matters much to me, as I do not care about the iPhone.

The M1 Pro and Max, they seem to be a beast. With the M1 Pro, for me it would be more than enough for everything I would do with a Mac, the Max already seems crazy to me.

The price, at least in Europe, has not been as dramatic as I thought, I was expecting even higher prices. The 13" 2020 Intel High-end version costs 120€ less than the new 14" M1 Pro. But in the 16" the difference between the Intel 2019 and the new 16" M1 Pro is only 50€. Taking into account the mini-LED screen, 120hz, the new design and all the new technical features, it does not seem to me that the prices have risen too much.

Now, the unified memory, memory and processor expansions seem excessive to me. 500€ to go from 16 to 32 gigs of unified memory seems to me an outrage.

And for me, the death of the TouchBar is sad, because I liked it a lot, and I gave it some use, especially in video. And for me the new Apple shortcuts on the function keys, such as voice dictation, night mode, etc. do not add anything, because I prefer to have control of the keyboard light, for example, and with the TouchBar I could have it configured as I wanted it.

After all this, there is only one thing left for me to know: when will the 32" iMac with M1 Pro be available? 🤗

I agree, the pricing is very strange. I wonder if the pricing reflects the difficulty in producing the silicon itself. What makes the 16GB to 32GB memory upgrade a poor choice is this:

On the 14" MBP, you can upgrade to the M1 Max (24-core GPU) for USD500 and that takes you to 32 GB automatically. I would rather spend the extra USD100 to get the improved performance and extra memory together.

On the 16" MBP, it's worse. If you opt for the base M1 Pro, the 16GB to 32GB upgrade is also USD400. However, upgrading the M1 Pro to M1 Max (24-core GPU) is only USD200 and that includes a memory bump to 32GB. So why would I actually want to pay USD200 more for a slower processor to get 32GB?

Seems to me the M1 Pro with 32 GB is just not a good value whatsoever any way you look at it.

EDIT: I f'd that up. If you select the 24-core GPU with the 16" model, the upgrade price is actually $600 as it includes $400 for the memory bump from 16GB to 32GB. Ugh. At any rate, that memory upgrade is not priced well.

The notch works! They handle the notch well. Many people who haven’t seen the event here complain without knowing that the fullscreen mode works fine.
what pro is using fullscreen mode for all their apps? an insane amount of window switching for my workflow

I’m not talking about what how the pros use their laptop. I’m talking about how Apple compensates the notch on the new MacBook Pro. Look! the active area hasn’t been obscured by the notch at all. You even get the same 16:10 active area all time. Isn’t that great?

Can't have it both ways.

i wasn’t joking one bit. I honestly feel people are weak and lazy af; especially complaining about 1-4lbs for a laptop that doesn’t overheat or gives increíble performance above the competition and this gives BOTH!

sorry I’m nearly 50 I don’t look it genetically but I was always a runt skinny and small but I NEVER complaint about a school bag being heavy or a laptop since early 90’s when they were closer to 6lbs+ on average!

ppl should t be expecting a notebook to be light like an iPad and get even 1/4 this performance with full versatility. Sure upgradeble components is gone allowing for better performance and lightness or a more rigid product.

don’t confuse weight with lack of performance and heat in the last 7yrs they’ve been less synonymous in notebooks more and more every year.

going to school walking or public transit I complaint about the serious -20C cold with 40-50kmh winds. (Yeah sounds like ol timers story but I was a chocolate popsicle coming home from a 12km walk. That heavy bag kept me warm.

The design does look thick and a throwback indeed. I like ‘em thick lol 😂

joking aside I think in the hands this will surprise a few ppl still. Try to ignore the raised feet that give that extra thick appearance it’s meant for space cooling.
