One of the worst things you could do to your battery (phone, laptop, iPad) is to constantly plug and plug it; and that's exactly what a single port does for this one.

Wonder how bad the battery will be after a year or so of use

Are you saying the actual act of plugging/unplugging is bad for the battery? I think you mean bad for the port? Or else you're saying you shouldn't leave it plugged in all of the time? Either way, I don't think having one port makes any difference here.

Like how some people are preferring the weak 13" MBA instead of the 13" MBP?
Yes portability, weight and battery life while still having power and plugs for your everyday travel is what a laptop should have. So the MBA is the best of the ultra portables Apple makes. Your point is meh. I can bring another subcategory of laptops or desktops w your point of view.

I think he means that battery life shortens faster when cycles are consumed in bigger chunks. Having to unplug it to add anything instead then it will run more on battery. You can evade this by having a hub plugged that also runs through power to the MacBook.

Well for me I need to evaluate the iPad Pro vs a MacBook. I use the pro a lot with a keyboard or Ina. Stand. MacBook doesn't have access to a pencil or the app selection but can run real photography software. I'm curious how Lightroom runs on this with the new gfx chip and how the new MacBook compares to surface pro 3 I already own

I have the lowest spec of the old model, and Lightroom runs OK. The only part that is noticeably slow is when it first generates the high res preview for a picture (I think mine is set up to do this on loading the picture for the first time, rather than on import) - for the 24MP images from my Sony A6000, I would say it takes around 2 seconds to generate the JPEG preview and 6-8 seconds to generate the RAW preview. Editing (moving sliders etc.) is pretty much instant.

I wouldn't want to use it as my primary machine, but for use on holiday, I think it is great - my workflow is to browse the pictures and filter the pictures in JPEG then only use the RAW if I want to do some major editing, so I just hide the RAWs by default. You could also set it to generate the previews on import, and take the hit at import time instead, if this is a big deal.

Photography software on an iPad would probably be snappier but unfortunately you are so restricted by the lack of a file system and the simplistic Camera Roll-oriented set up that it is ultimately pretty useless if you eventually want to sync it back to Lightroom on a computer (to be fair, I haven't used LR for iPad much, but you're still going to have hassles with lack of storage space, lack of file system, etc).

If you already have a Surface Pro 3 though, perhaps that is sufficient for running LR? I did actually consider the Surface Pro as an option initially, despite not being a huge fan of Windows, but was put off by reports of bugginess on the new model and overall poor battery life (ideally I want to be able to use it for a long haul flight without worrying if the plane has chargers); as well as the fact that Windows isn't hugely suited for my development work and running a virtual machine on a slow computer like that is going to tax it (and the battery) too much. Shame, as having a high quality touch screen/pen would be quite cool for photo editing, but I can always use Astropad on my old iPad with my Wacom pen if I do need that.

TL;DR - if you want to do anything "real", go for the MacBook ;)

I heard that 13" will be replaced with a 14" bezel free & 15" will be replaced with 16" bezel free (keeping same size of what they are now)

Who would love to see that ? <3

While it is ok to charge a lithium battery frequently plugging in and out the cable consumes the battery more.
When you reach 100% of battery charge your mac is powered via the adapter, but if you unplug the cable you start using your battery, then you plug in the cable again and the battery charges and so on.
That's one of the reasons why I'd buy a 14'' Macbook with two ports. I'd use one exclusively for power and have one free to connect an external drive, an ethernet adapter etc.
What I'm looking for is a retina Macbook Air, while the 12'' Macbook is basically a wireless machine, it is perfect if you only seldom need to connect something and need an extra portable laptop.

Egomaniacs Tim and Jony are busy taking pictures for the press, traveling everywhere and giving interviews about global warming, gay rights, politics, human rights, privacy etc. instead of staying in an office, working on new products and listening to what Apple's customers want. Please someone fire both of them and bring a person who cares about Apple again. They were able to take orders from Steve but left unsupervised they are a disaster.

We don't know **** about the rMBP update. It may never happen. And if it does happen it might be rubbish.
How long can the "Pro" stay on sale with a significantly older generation CPU, less base memory and less storage than the standard MB?...

Rubbish.
worst Mac product EVER.
it's sad,but this is a true and legit proof why Apple haters claim Apple products are just over priced toys with no finctionality.

charging premium, and then giving you ancient 480p camera and just one single port for everything.

there is no way ANYONE can justify that, others have made laptops thinner and smaller with a dozen of ports, there is clearly space for at least one more port, and about the ancient resolution of camera..just insulting.

You know, you can tape the dongle to your power cable and have always usb & hdmi available.

What I find interesting is that not only Air is still around, but got a bump to 8 GB (13") for free. So essentially Apple dropped their prices. It's the second time this year, apocalypse must be near!
Then they will lose another chunk of the market to the rising windows 10 powerful and fully functional mini laptops from the likes of Surface,Dell and others.
There are many MBA users who do not like bulkiness and weight of a MBP and definitely can't accept limitations of this fashion/toy model.
they will be forced to switch to Surface,XPS,etc.

I hope you're right, but for some reason I doubt there will be MBA updates at WWDC, especially as they increased the standard RAM today. Why would they do this if there's gonna be an update in less then 2 months?
One possibility, which I don't believe, would be that Apple has too big inventory of 8gb models and they want to sell them away before new model and/or 4gb is almost out and they don't want to make another batch of the old model.

Anyway, not being able to drive normal tv as a screen (4k@60Hz) in 2016 is a deal breaker to me. Waiting for June...

The issue though is after tax you're at almost two grand for a mac book../ and really is it going to be any faster than an iPad Pro/ and web surfing etc going to be much difference? I really need to talk to a photographer who owned a MacBook and either loved or hated it

You know, an iPad Pro will probably load pages faster, I've found Safari a touch sluggish on it. But then interacting with those pages I find much quicker on a laptop with trackpad rather than touchscreen, but YMMV.

Re: photography use - it works OK. If you're going to be dealing with huge RAW/PSD files you probably want the Pro unless you need ultimate portability, but for casual Lightroom usage, it's fine, and the screen makes a big difference. You don't want to be doing photography stuff on an iPad unless you are willing to adopt weird and restrictive workflows IMO.

Show me a current laptop that is smaller, lighter, thinner, with less overall volume that the rMB, while still having a real-world 8-10 hour battery and tons of ports.

Not just one of those metrics, all of them.

I'll wait here.

HP Spectre. You're welcome. (Volume is slightly bigger, but it is thinner, so it doesn't really make a difference)

Apple today announced that it has released new 12-inch MacBook models with the latest sixth-generation Skylake dual-core Intel Core M processors up to 1.3 GHz, new Intel HD Graphics 515 that deliver up to 25% faster performance, faster PCIe-based flash storage, an additional hour of battery life, and faster 1866 MHz memory.

The ultra-thin notebook has the same all-metal unibody enclosure that remains 13.1 mm thick and weighs just 2 pounds, with a full-sized butterfly mechanism keyboard and Force Touch trackpad. Like the original model, the new 12-inch MacBook is also fanless and has no moving parts or vents.

The notebook continues to have a 12-inch display with a 2,304-by-1,440 resolution at 226 PPI, single USB 3.1 Type-C port, 256GB or 512GB flash storage, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, a 480p FaceTime camera, stereo speakers, dual microphones, and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

The one-hour improvement to battery life, which is now up to 10 hours, was achieved not only by more efficient Skylake processors, but also due to a larger 41.4-watt-hour lithium-polymer battery. The original 12-inch MacBook has a slightly smaller 39.7-watt-hour battery that lasts up to 9 hours per charge.

The refreshed 12-inch MacBook models are available through Apple's online store starting today, and at Apple retail stores and select Apple Authorized Resellers starting tomorrow. The base 1.1GHz Core m3 model costs $1,299, while the faster 1.2GHz Core m5 model costs $1,599. The 1.3GHz Core m7 is a $250 upgrade.

In addition to Rose Gold, the 12-inch MacBook remains available in existing Gold, Silver, and Space Gray colors.

Apple has also made 8GB of memory standard across all 13-inch MacBook Air configurations.

I love my mid 2013 Macbook Air.(13" i7 8gb, 128) It's the best laptop I've ever owned--and I've owned nearly a dozen over the years not counting work machines.

What more could I ask for in a notebook? Well a modern display wouldn't hurt. I also wouldn't mind if it was even lighter and smaller. (though the lowres 11" screen was not usable to me before anyone mentions that model)

Enter the 2015 12" Macbook. It's almost perfect. Really my only concerns are the cpu, the battery life, and the keyboard. Everything else is great. I eventually decided to hold off for a skylake refresh as the CPU and battery life would improve.

So now it has happened. The device I was waiting for is here. ...Only it's missing thunderbolt 3 and the facetime cam still sucks. Do I really need those things? I don't know. The real thing holding me back from just ordering it is the lack of an Air refresh to compare it to. Do I buy one now only to have it bested by an amazing ~2.6 lb MBP/MBA (depending on what apple decides to call it) I really want one, but I feel like buying it now would be spending $1600 before really having all the information. I feel like I must wait till June.

i am in the same situation. my macbook air is the best computer i have every used. but i can't buy the macbook due to the keyboard. i just don't like it. the lack of USB-C on it for USB thumb drive usage is just not right. just one port is commendable, but for people who need to use their machine in a variety of settings its lack of ports is just a few years ahead of its time.
i don't need an updated air to be any thinner or lighter. I just need a keyboard that has keys that travel like the air's does.
[doublepost=1461151698][/doublepost]
The keyboard is still horribad for touch-typing as well. Have you tried it? I didn't expect them to revert here, so I'm watching what's coming in June for the MBP. Which is sad, because the MB is one USB port and a better keyboard away from being all I need.

yes. yes. i said yes. and so did Molly.
