AirPods Pro (APP)
Spent some time this weekend doing a few calls with the APP and found that frequently the sounds was “krinkly”. Something like a “scrunchy plastic wrapping” sound in the background. Not all calls all the time but the majority of the time. Did the APP disconnect and reconnect but no help. Not sure if it is beta 2 or the APP update.

Reported.

No matter what I do, I cannot coax my AirPods Pro to update the firmware. I also have two of the issues, talked about here. 1. The prior settings of Left being Siri and starting off on transparency are consistently lost. 2. My AirPods seem to have greater affinity for joining a MacOS device even when I am trying to pair or I am already using them on a phone call with my iPhone. I wish we could tell them to prioritize a particular device when more than one is in range.
I have the exact same problem. And in no way can I force an update. I've probably tried every possible way.

Every time there's an update, I obsess about updating the damn things as soon as possible, and no matter what I do and to which Gods I pray to, it never happens. Then, maybe fifteen minutes after I finally give up I check the FW version for giggles and boom goes the dynamite, they're up to date.

No discernible rhyme nor reason to the process, they'll do their thing when they're good and ready it seems.

Hey guys, tomorrow I will be posting my findings about the AirPods Pro's ANC with firmware 3E751. Been tracking their firmwares on my YT channel since day 1, so stay tuned!

I agree with this. I was actually shocked at how poor the quality sounded with the last firmware update. The sound was muddy and you couldn’t pick apart the individual instruments as easily. To me it sounded like 96kbps stuff at times even with some “Apple Digitial Masters”. This firmware update has separated the instruments better and the vocals are clearer too. It’s closer to CD quality to me but still room for improvement.

It’s a bit annoying that Apple can release a firmware update that we get no choice in upgrading to and we have to sit for months listening to bad quality sound because they messed up. I actually switched to using my PowerBeats Pro for a while because of it.
Ah, I meant to reply to this, yes, thought I was the only one.

3A283 was the worst update. 2D27 was okay, at least the NC was decent and instrument separation was tight. However, bass was garbage and sound felt too tinny/plugged. Narrow. And then 3A283 was bloated, muddy garbage and the NC took the largest check since the first Apple Knows Best update in 2019. So new update with decent sound staging + separation IMO makes them at least somewhat enjoyable because of the sound quality.

With respect to the whole update debacles more broadly, what's worse about updates is they don't really make any of these notable (IMO the mic gunk can't account for this because I've had multiple pairs I bought new with 2D27 that updated to new versions - immediate reduction in NC etc as reported by countless others!) or even remotely salient. It's like ****ing pissing in the wind.
Apple, either ****ing make it 95% of the way to perfect or give me 80% and a slider or 2 for the other 15%. This proposal isn't e.g. editing the goddamn kernel on iOS, it's a noise cancelling slider for earbuds. There's room for *something*, be it NC customization or a real equalizer, and right now, it just feels like they only nail convenience when they could nail more. It's not like AirPods Max, they've a real engineering advantage here, it seems - they're still by and far the most discrete earbuds I've ever used, they charge absurdly fast, and frankly the value is great in context, up and until recently had I been (hypothetical) asked + forced to pick between keeping my Watch Series 6 or AirPods Pro, then I'd be wearing a field watch right now, haha. IDK.

Really, I'm a bit confused by the inconsistency. This is all low-hanging fruit for the world's largest company. Luckily earbuds have some solid competition and I have no brand "loyalty" per se, but it's almost painful seeing good tech go to waste.

  • Will randomly disconnect from one device (e.g. iPhone) to connect to another one (e.g. Windows laptop) while I'm talking on the phone
I used a windows 10 device while my Mac was getting repaired and it seems that Windows prioritizes any bluetooth device.

I have several bluetooth earbuds (AirPods Pro, Beats Flex, and a friend's Anker Soundcore Liberty Airs) and I tried a test. I paired all three to my iPhone and also paired all three with said windows 10 computer.
Then I turned on bluetooth on the windows 10 computer, closed the lid, and connected each to my iPhone with music playing.

100% of the time with each headphone, the moment I opened the lid of the windows 10 laptop, it would stop playing music from my phone and automatically connect to the computer.

It's just one of the hundreds of things I hate windows for.

Apple needs to add a way to manually update the AirPods.

Apple support gave me the following instructions to update the firmware. So far, it has worked every time for me.

To update, follow these steps:
1. Listen to music or other audio with your AirPods for at least 30 seconds.
2. Put your AirPods back in the charging case, and close the lid.
3. Keep the lid closed, and connect your AirPods to the charging cable and power adapter.
4. Wait 30 minutes (usually takes less than that for me, but see the note below about opening the case).
5. Connect your AirPods to your device, and check to make sure the update has completed.

The lid of your AirPods charging case needs to be closed during the entire process. If it’s opened, it will interrupt the process, and it will start over.

Been trying to figure out how to update my new Airpods that just arrived since while everyone notes there isn't a clear path I assume something must trigger it. Put on wireless charger next to phone nothing. Put in ears, nothing. Put in case with container connected to bluetooth nothing. Realized wifi wasn't connected tried that and did all those options again nothing. Then next I tried charging the case with a wire with them inside case opened and connected to bluetooth, while on wifi, and on the bluetooth setting page for the airpods, and in less than a couple seconds it showed the updated version number. So maybe that doesn't work for everyone, but since I was trying for an hour, it would seem the key to trigger it more immediately is them in open case, being charged with a wire, connected via bluetooth on wifi and on the bluetooth setting screen for them. Maybe the setting screen doesn't matter or maybe wifi doesn't matter, but charging with the wire definitely seems to be a major factor in triggering it immediately at least.
