Can someone please tell me what the point of iTunes in the Cloud (or Match) on an Apple TV is? You can already stream your music to your Apple TV over wifi direct from your computer without having to waste your network download gigabytes. It's not like you can use an Apple TV without a computer and there must be very few people who don't download the music they've purchased onto their computer. Don't get it.
Yes you don't need your computer on to do this!

Does the jailbreak still work with this version? I really need to just sell my Apple TV 2 on ebay and just get an ATV 3 and pocket the difference. I have no need or intention to jailbreak mine, but I am all for profit :D

My parents have just an ipad and an Apple TV - no computer. This way they can just stream music and videos they have purchased from iTunes on the Apple TV - works great and easy to use too.

I have a scenario:
your library is on your home computer
you are away from home (conference, work, friends house) and want to listen to your content

I see this would be big in schools as an example.

Beware, Netflix does not work over AirPlay! Probably digital rights issues :(

It does work, but you have to use the Airplay mirroring option. Sat watching it now using my iPhone 4s and Apple TV2. I was certain it worked so just tested it now however I've updated both my Apple TV 2 and iPhone OS today I'm not sure if its a new feature but pretty certain it worked before. I've found before that if some Apps won't Airplay straight away you have to use the mirror option. However for ITV player (here in the UK) it still won't fool it into working using the mirror option.

The only reason to use Airplay for netflix on Apple TV is a couple of times I've had the netflix app on the Apple TV just hang/crash but was still able to stream from iphone to Apple TV. Hopefully todays update will see less of this issue.

Just updated two properties to cable internet only, plus a Roku box and an Ooma VoIP solution. About to add AppleTV to them, and add a similar setup to two additional properties.

To make this as robust as land line it needs a backup power solution.

I would like to see a chart of multi-room setups as suggested or modified.

I am inclined to hardwire everything on ethernet.

Meh....

I want to see NAS support so I don't have to have my main Mac on all the time, just to watch a movie. It's not an unusual request, Apple.:rolleyes:

Virtually every other network streaming player out there does this.

I will see what happens when I get my Snynology NAS up and running, it comes with an iTunes server, so that should free up my Mac Mini from that duty. I just got a dual bay one, I'll rip out the 2G from my Lacie Quadra, and slap it in there with a 2TB WD Blue.

Why would you need a hard drive? If you want to save a movie and watch it multiple times or keep a local iTunes library?

Correct... and this becomes about ten times more important if you have kids. Who want to watch the same stuff a thousand times. Much of which is not in the iTMS, Netflix, or what have you, but can be ripped from DVD. An internal hard drive isn't even as necessary; access to NAS without forcing an iTunes library to "manage" it would do the trick.

As it stands, if I need to take my MBP on the road to work, my family has no media server and can only watch what's on Netflix or the antenna. That's a lot of stuff, granted, and at the end of the day they make do. Obviously this is a far cry from the three-networks-and-an-indie-station I grew up watching. But it's completely arbitrary that they can't just watch whatever we have, using NAS on the network. What, I'm gonna go into the closet and get out DVDs? Letting kids "handle" optical media is its own issue.

No dice I'm afraid, I have a synology nas and ATV2 - the iTunes server on the nas only serves to iTunes on a computer. Jailbreak and install xbmc; quadruples the value of the ATV2 hands down.

Well they are seriously mistaken if they actually believe people will re-purchase movies they already have (saved to their NAS) just so iCloud can stream it to the ATV.

^^^ Over and over, THIS. Look, I'm willing to buy. I buy the BR "with digital copy" all the time and the redeems are HD now so it's very nice. I've also bought season passes of content from iTMS and been quite satisfied with it. But it's not realistic to expect me to rebuy my existing video and movie collection. I accept that there probably won't be a movie Match. But it'd be nice if the ATV would: (1) play mp4 files off a NAS drive; and (2) play them in the proper 24fps framerate on compatible displays (such as mine). You know, since almost any $30 Wal-mart blu-ray player can do both of these things.

I watch Netflix via ipad all the time on my big screen plasma. I use VPN on the ipad so I am able to get American Netflix in Canada. Never had a stutter or delay issue. It works great!

well I had success after taking drastic measures. Mine was stuck at about 2/3rds of the way on "step 1 of 2 preparing update"

1. I pulled the plug, crossed my fingers, counted to ten and plugged it back in. The unit came right back up but of course was still not updated.

2. Selected the update software again and it went really quickly at first then stalled again at the 2/3rds point on step 1 of 2

3. Tried the other ATV in the house and it updated without issues and in about 6 minutes total time.

4. Compared what was different between the two the one that was failing was the setting on "Sleep After". The one that was failing was set to "Never". The one that worked was set to "5 hours"

5. Set the failing unit to the 5 hour setting and tried again and it worked without a hitch...

Why that would make a difference is beyond me:confused:, but regardless it's working now and hopefully this info might help someone else.

I pulled the plug at that point as well. ATV started up fine after....and I was able to make NO changes, and just do the update again and it worked.

Seriously Apple....it's a closed box, all flash that doesn't hold anything but the OS....and you can't get an update to work all the time?

Second update in a row that doesn't work via Ethernet. No biggie but annoying.

Now, which is the best Bluetooth keyboard to purchase?

Not sure what the advantage of this would be. Wouldn't any TV in a home entertainment setup already have connected speakers? Does anyone actually even make dual stereo speakers for airplay (not the single box that booms out "stereo")?

Please someone...explain.

You're right, it's not for everyone, but this is something I've been waiting for for a while. I've got an HD projector that isn't part of a permanent home theater setup - that is, it spends most of its time in a closet waiting for movie nights with the kids or backyard movies in the summer. Instead of running audio cables to speakers setup on one end of the room (or yard) where the screen is and video cable to the other end of the room where the projector is, it will be a lot easier to just plug an airport express up with some portable powered speakers and send the audio across the room (or yard) wirelessly.

what would be great

as far as im aware you cant browse the net on the apple tv,
but it has a processor capable of doing so.
would it be too much for someone to port safari to the ATV.

That would be nice.

Amazon is a competitor in where Apple wants to go, durrrrrrrrrrrr.

If you use an TV, you'll find out exactly why it's actually a desirable product.
durrrrrrrrrrrr, the :apple:tv has netflix and hulu plus so amazon videos should be a part of it too.

They'll never support a basic NAS, but it would be nice if they would at least support a hard drive connected to an AirPort Base Station.

Sounds like a processor bump and not much more.

Simple - they just have to open home sharing to third parties. That way NAS's could just implement the protocol in their software.

(1) TV Show Folders (and movies) - CANNOT STAND that this feature was taken away back when Gen2 came out. It is ridiculous that it hasn't been implemented when even iTunes sorts by each season now.

(2) Multiple Home Sharing Accounts. It should have access to more than one at a time...useful for big families/roomates.

(3) Output of other aspect ratios when Airplaying the iPad...it would be nice to wirelessly connect to a projector/smartboard for teachers and not have to deal with the black bars.

(4) Apps - sure, def. want them, but not for just anything. i want companies to make app channels and such. That would be a big help.

You can access multiple home sharing accounts on the Apple TV. That ability has been there for quite a while. You probably don't have Home Sharing set up correctly. Every computer should use one single "master" account to set up Home Sharing. However, they all can still retain their own separate iTunes account. That's the often misunderstood part of Home Sharing.

As for the black bars, they only exist if the app itself doesn't allow the full screen. There are plenty of apps that do full screen Airplay with no black bars. Video content displays in whatever ratio it was encoded in.

But that would cut into Mac mini sales and Mountain Lion Mac sales- ain't never gone to happen. I've been asking for the same for years.

Apple don't like Amazon- competes with iTunes plain and simple. Just buy a Sony Blu-ray player- Netflix is included, along with so much more

"AirPlay audio for videos: Send stereo audio from movies, TV shows, and other videos on Apple TV to AirPlay-enabled speakers and devices (including AirPort Express and other Apple TVs)."

Now Apple needs to isolate center channel and rear channel signals, so one could use Airplay speakers as surround sound speakers.
